Chapter 319: Chapter 319: Will You Help Me?
When hearing the concern in her voice, she nodded and smiled gently. "It’ll be fine! This scene shouldn’t take very long."
When Clyde heard the news, he was a little surprised. "Really! She agreed," he said, raising his eyebrows and grinning.
Malloy nodded quickly and looked at Clyde."Yes! It didn’t take much to persuade her," he said. "Edie’s very easy to get along with, and since she’s not well known and it’s only a small role...." he hesitated. "Well, let’s just say she’s not the difficult one!" Without even thinking about what he was saying. The words blurted out of his mouth.
"What do you mean? The difficult one!" Clyde said sternly.
"Oh! I was just thinking about Geneva," he lied. Clyde was a well-known actor and was always putting demands on Malloy. Clyde was the one who was difficult, a man who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Malloy glanced at him, trembling inside.
"Great!" Clyde said happily. "We’ll be shooting the scene! I can’ wait."
Malloy let out a sigh of relief. "I’ll let everyone know we’re almost ready to begin," he said.
Everyone took their places, and the filming started. Faye wandered around the palace. "What are we supposed to do? If we can find Prince Raines, maybe he can help?" she asked the other servants.
Lettie gave Faye a curt reply, "No! Stay here. There has to be something else we can do for her without asking the Prince."
"We’re only servants. What can we do? If anyone finds out the Prince has helped us, we could all be eliminated. We could all die." the girl said, her voice rising and crackling a little.
Mae suddenly spoke. "Prince Raines is here with the Emperor. I have to try. It’s Sally’s only hope."
Dahlia looked at Mae with a puzzled expression on her face. "Do you really think he can help?" she asked.
Mae’s eyes narrowed as she considered her options. She exhaled, pushing all her emotions. She needed to be calm. "I intend to keep my promise to Sally and follow them through, but first, I need to find a way to get to the Prince." She made up her mind; it was almost impossible for anyone to do anything about it. She glanced toward the skinny window. It was pouring outside. "All right! I’m leaving." Mae grabbed her umbrella and turned to leave the room.
There were plenty of people hurrying by, their long robes flapping as they hurried or shushing as they glided by. Mae shook away her distracting thoughts as she came to a stop at the back of the crowd of women. There was a woman in red and another in blue. The one in red glanced at her briefly, but when Mae met her gaze, the woman ducked her head and stared at the ground. Mae stopped, turned, and ran until she came to a large gate set in the center of a towering stone wall. She stopped and fell to her knees, and two guards were standing outside.
"Move along?" One of the guards said.
"I’m Mae," she said as she raised her head so they could see her face.
"What do you want?" he asked.
"I’ve come to speak with Prince Raines. He knows who I am," Mae said. She flicked her eyes towards the tall man striding towards the gate from the other side.
"Ha! You expect us to believe that?’ said the older one, a smirk playing across his lips.
Mae slowly pulled up her sleeve, exposing a shiny gold bracelet. Sally had given it to her because she was extremely grateful for all Mae has done for her. It was Sally’s way of expressing her appreciation.
The guard’s eyes widened as they looked at the expensive piece of jewelry. "What do we have here? A piece of jewelry!" one of the guards said.
Mae took off the gold bracelet and thrust it into one of the guards hands, "Will you let me in now?" she asked.
"I will inform Prince Raines you are here, but if he turns you away..." the guard said.
Before he could finish, Mae spoke up. "It’s yours whatever Prince Raines decides."
The guards nodded and opened the door. Countless thoughts coursed through her mind. "Will Prince Raines even see me? The last time we spoke, I begged him to leave Sally alone, and now I’m....’
"We’re here," the guard said. "I will ask Prince Raines if he wishes to see you."
Mae nodded her head. Standing outside the door, she sighed, shaking her head and wondered. ’Am I doing the right thing? Yes, it has to be this is Sally’s only hope.’
The door opened slowly. "He will see you," the guard said.
Mae entered the room, looking nervous and distracted, like a timid doe with its head lowered. Finally, she stood and stepped forward, kneeling before the Prince. Extraordinarily wet, she began shivering and shaking. "Prince Raines...." she said, her voice quivering.
"You must get out of those clothes, Mae. You’re soaking wet. You’ll catch pneumonia," the Prince said. Prince Raines was shocked, seeing Mae in such a state. "Someone go get her a towel and a cup of tea," he ordered.
"I need you to help Sally. I understand if you say no, but I don’t know what else to do." Tears gathered slowly in her eyes.
"Stand up," he ordered. "You must keep your head up. Even when you think there’s no hope."
Mae stood transfixed, bewildered, unable to collect her thoughts, but her eyes fell at that moment on the Prince. "I know I asked you not to help Sally, but it’s urgent, and I don’t know what else to do." Very slowly, she slipped to her knees, and her head was bowed, her eyes lowered, afraid to look up at the Prince.
"Stand up and look at me," he slightly raised his voice. "You want me to help, but you won’t even look at me?" fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Mae looked up, her eyes filled with brightness and hope. "Will you help me?"
