Chapter 298: Chapter 298: Stuart Heart Is Filled With Sorrow
Hearing Donald speak, tears were welling up in her eyes, and Edie blinked them away. The doctors gathered around Donald, forcing Edie to step back. "Everyone steps back and gives us some room," one of the doctors yelled. They immediately opened Donald’s shirt to look at the puncture wound.
"What can I do? Is he going to be okay?" she asked frantically.
"Excuse me, but please don’t interfere," the doctor said.
The doctor tried to stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the wound. A stretcher was brought outside, and they slowly moved Donald over on to it and took him into the hospital.
As they walk past Edie, her voice breaks and tears begin to race down her cheeks. "There’s so much blood."
Edie followed them in, her subconscious mind concentrating on Donald. Suddenly her hand was grasped, and she was pulled back. Edie had been so worried about Donald’s safety that she forgot about Stuart. She turned and saw the look on Stuart’s face. His face seemed a bit heavy with thin lips pressed together tightly, and his eyes were black as charcoal. Stuart paused, showing no emotion. He looked at Edie’s face and saw absolute terror. "Stuart, you are making me feel uncomfortable. Why are you looking at me that way."
Tears flowed fast and furious down Edie’s face. There was a flash of regret in his eyes as he wiped away her tears. "Sorry, I know how worried you are!"
"Please understand! I have to go and see if he’s okay. I’m so afraid that he may not make it. He has to. After all, he saved my life," Edie explained.
Stuart understood her mood, panic, regret, and self-blame. It was the same as when he watched Marina and her accident. He would have rather hurt himself than to owe anyone else, but seeing Edie cry for another man was hard for him to watch. Stuart’s heart was filled with sorrow, but he didn’t say a word. He didn’t want to upset her any more than she already was.
Stuart reached out and gently moved strands of Edie’s hair that clung to her cheek. He kissed her and whispered in her ear. "I know what you’re going through. You don’t need to explain it to me. I understand. Go and see Donald. I will wait downstairs, or I can go home?" freewebnσvel.cøm
Edie couldn’t help but be surprised. She had mixed feelings, and then she thought about the conversation they had about trusting one another. There was so much she wanted to say, but now was not the time. She nodded and said, "Would you mind waiting for me?"
Then she turned around and went into the hospital. When Edie arrived inside, Donald was rushed to the operating room. Edie went from nurse to nurse, trying to find any information about Donald’s condition. One of the nurses looked at her warily. "Are you a family member?" she asked.
"No, I’m a....," Edie tried to explain.
"I’m sorry, but I can’t give out any information," the nurse answered.
"I am a family member," Edie said hastily.
The nurse looked at Edie suspiciously and said, "You’re not a reporter pretending to be one of his family members? Are you?" The nurse was informed who Donald was and was warned that the hospital would soon be swamped with reporters.
Then Edie realized that she had a picture of Donald and her from a year ago. She rifled through her purse, trying to find her phone. She found it and showed it to the nurse. "See this picture of Donald and I. I’m telling you the truth," Edie said.
The nurse eyed the picture, and hesitantly told Edie about Donald’s condition. "The knife just missed his heart. The puncture wound is deep, and he’s lost a lot of blood. The doctors are doing their best to try and save him.
Edie gasped and took several deep breaths. "He may not make it?" she asked.
"His condition is very serious. I’m sorry, but that’s all the news I have right now," the nurse said.
Edie anxiously sat outside the door of the operating room, waiting for word about Donald. Every second seemed to be like an hour. It seemed like an eternity. Edie recalled what happened a year ago. It was the same thing. Donald was hurt, and she was waiting patiently for word about his condition. ’Things are different between us now,’ she thought, but she didn’t want any harm to come to him.
Edie lost all track of time, and suddenly, the door swung open. The doctor stepped out and removed the mask from his face. "He’s..." freewёbnoνel.com
Edie never gave him a chance to speak. She quickly stood up and asked, "How is he? Is he going to be okay?"
"It was touch and go for a while, but because Donald is a young and healthy man; he’s going to pull through
Edie let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you for saving his life. Can I see him?" she asked.
"Yes, he’s in a private room on the third floor. I must warn you, he’s very weak, and it might take some time for him to recover completely," he replied.
Edie arrived at Donald’s room and opened the door. All she could smell was the odor of disinfectant and a faint smell of blood that lingered in the air. She stood back from the bed, afraid to move. Donald looked so helpless and fragile. He was lying on a bed covered with a white blanket, with tubes coming out of him. Edie never saw so many tubes in one person, except in a horror movie.
Tears fell from Edie’s eyes as she watched Donald breathe in and out. "I’m so happy you’re okay. I knew you wouldn’t die." Edie took a deep breath and continued. "While I was waiting for someone to tell me about your condition, I remembered what happened a year ago. Your life is so important, and you deserve to be happy. I hope you and Joanna are happy, and I know how important Hawk Real Estate is to you. So I know in my heart that everything is going to work out for you."
Edie didn’t know if Donald could hear her or not, but it didn’t matter. This was her way of saying goodbye. "I’m leaving now, but I wanted you to know how thankful I am that you’re going to be okay. I wish you all the happiness in the world. Goodbye, Donald!" Edie took one last look at Donald and turned and walked out of the room.
The door closed, and the room was silent. Then suddenly Donald’s hands start shaking violently.
