Chapter 299: Chapter 299: The Madness of the Past
Edie took her phone out of her purse and realized it had no power. She wanted to call Stuart and find out where he was. She was worried that she might not be able to find him. She looked in the waiting room and in the lobby and couldn’t see him. Then she stepped outside of the hospital, and there he was sitting on a bench. People were walking by staring at Stuart. One girl took out her phone and took a picture of him.
Stuart had been sitting outside for four hours, waiting for Edie to return. She thought he looked so sad and lonely. Edie could not take her eyes off of him, and then she slowly walked toward him. The closer she got, the sadder she felt. Stuart was always on top of things, so perfectly in control. He had always been there for her when she needed him most.
Edie wrapped her arms around Stuart’s neck and gently put her face against his. She softly said, "I’m back. I wasn’t sure where you were. I wanted to call, but my phone was dead."
Stuart put her hand in his and whispered in her ear, "How is he? Is he okay?"
"The operation was successful, and he’s out of danger. I tried to call Joanna and Karen, but I couldn’t get a hold of either one of them. So I asked one of the nurses to contact the Lynch family," Edie explained.
Edie felt a little awkward asking the nurse to call his family because she knew there was no connection between them anymore, but this was her way of trying to thank him for saving her life.
Stuart nodded and said, "When Donald recovers, I need to thank him." As much as Stuart disliked him, he knew he owed him that.
Edie never said a word, and she nodded in agreement. Suddenly Stuart’s phone rang. "Hello, is that so. Okay, thanks for letting me know," he said. "That was Miss Anna. She told me Hicks woke up. I would like to see how she’s feeling."
Edie nodded again. When they arrived at Hicks’ room, both Anna and Hicks were full of questions. One of the staff members of the hospital informed Anna about the incident that went on earlier with Fabian.
"How are you? Anna told me what happened. Did either of you get hurt?" Hicks asked.
Edie smiled and replied, "No, we’re both fine. Neither one of us got hurt."
Miss Anna abruptly spoke out, "Hicks, you don’t need to worry. Of course, Edie is fine. Stuart would never let anything happen to her.
"Yes, but who will protect the CEO. I was worried about....." Hicks never finished, but everyone knew what she was about to say. She lowered her head to hide the embarrassment.
Feeling uncomfortable, Edie quickly changed the topic and asked, "Tell us, how are you feeling? What did the doctor say?"
"He told me I have a slight concussion and that I was very lucky. I will have a small scar on my forehead, but other than that, I’m going to be fine," Hicks said as she bit her lower lip.
Hicks didn’t say it out loud, but she was worried about having a scar. As an actress, your appearance meant everything in the entertainment world. Edie could see the disappointment on Hicks’ face and automatically knew what she was thinking. She was very sympathetic to Hicks. Edie turned to Stuart and said, "Maybe there’s something you could do about the scar? After all, she is now working for Universe Entertainment."
Stuart nodded in agreement, "Don’t worry! I’ll take care of it."
"Okay, no more worrying. You should get some rest," Edie said.
The expression on Hicks’ face changed. Her face solidified into hard lines. She smiled reluctantly and said, "Okay, thank you for all you’ve done."
Watching Stuart being so obedient to Edie gave Hicks this feeling of jealousy. ’What is this? Stuart doesn’t care about me. It takes being ordered by his wife for him to even consider helping me?’ Hicks’ thoughts were scattered.
She was upset and angry, and Hicks didn’t want them in her room anymore. She needed to make an excuse to get them out. "I’m really tired, and I have a headache. I imagine you both are very tired of everything that’s happened today. When I recover, I will come to visit, and thank you." freeωebnovēl.c૦m
"Yes, it’s been a long day. Get some rest, and we’ll see you soon," Stuart said, and they left.
The door closed, and the room was silent. Anna looked at Hicks and could see she was in deep thought. Anna grabbed an apple from the stand beside the bed and started to peel it. Anna never got a chance to finish telling Hicks the whole story about Marina, and now was her chance. "Remember when I was telling you about how Marina was held hostage? What happened earlier with Edie. Doesn’t it give you an overwhelming sense of familiarity? How lucky Edie is to have a man like Stuart. Unlike us...."
"That’s enough," Hicks shouted. She is not giving Anna a chance to finish speaking.
Anna dropped the apple and looked at her with a confused look on her face and said, "What? Did I say something wrong?"
Hicks felt such intense emotional pain, but she didn’t want to hear any more about Edie and Stuart. She realized that she behaved improperly and she began to apologize, "Miss Anna, I’m sorry that I shouted at you. It’s just...." she hesitated. "My head, it hurts. I didn’t know what I was doing. I think all I need is to rest." Hicks’ voice pitifully quivered as she spoke. ’The past! The madness of the past,’ she thought.
Anna stopped and stared at the apple on the floor. Then something came to her. ’Is it true. Is Hicks is Marina? Does she remember?’ Anna couldn’t help but wonder. "Are you sure you’re feeling okay? Do you want me to get the doctor?" Anna asked, trying to sound worried.
"I’m fine! I’m just tired. I need to get some rest if you don’t mind?" Hicks was trying to get Anna to leave her room.
Anna agreed and left her room at once. The room was silent again, and the expression on Hicks’ face disappeared. ’What does Edie have that makes Stuart love her so much? What is wrong with me?’ Hicks’ thoughts are jumping from one to the next.’ I want him to look at me the same way he looks at her. I’m young and beautiful.’ Her eyes squinted as if she was looking at something. Now there was no expression on her face, but her eyes, her eyes were filled with desire.
