Chapter 286: Chapter 286: Dinner Invitation
Ivan was standing right beside Stuart and could hear every word of his conversation with Hicks. Thinking of Stuart’s past experiences with Hicks, Ivan became extremely worried. He paced back and forth in the room, waiting for Stuart to get off the phone.
"Um... Edie is going to act in this drama. Didn’t you say that you wanted me to stay away from her? That’s why I turned down the audition." Hicks said hesitantly.
Stuart immediately stopped tapping his fingers and said, "Yes, I remember what I said. Thank you, you did a good job."
Hicks was a little timid and said, "Thank you for the other night."
She took a deep breath and waited for Stuart’s reply, "I will let the Universe Entertainment arrange a few new dramas for you. Just try to wait patiently, and you should soon hear from your agent."
Hicks couldn’t hide her excitement and said, "Thank you so much, Mr. Yates." freewebnovёl.ƈom
"If there isn’t anything else, then I am going to hang up now," Stuart said in a cold tone. He hung up, and there was no expression on his face. He said to Ivan, "Okay, continue where you left off."
Ivan quickly responded and continued with the report.
Back with Hicks, she was so happy that she jumped with joy! She held the phone tightly in her hand, and she couldn’t stop smiling. For the past few days, Hicks wanted to call Stuart, but every time she picked up the phone, she couldn’t seem to get the courage.
Finally, tonight Hicks decided that no matter what, she was going to Stuart. She had to hear his voice. She never expected that he would agree to help her so quickly! Hicks saw the advantage of having power again and again in Stuart.
Stuart could solve so many things that Hicks could not solve so easily. She thought about what Anna said, that Hicks looked like Stuart’s fiancée. Then Hicks looked in the mirror and touched her face and said, "Stuart is treating me so nice because of this face?"
Then suddenly, she was overwhelmed with shame as she thought of being treated as a substitute for Stuart. Instantly as if something flashed before her eyes, something changed, Hicks said in a deep monotone voice, "Even if I am a substitute, at least I have an opportunity to get close to Stuart! This is a chance that others will never have." Then with a heavy sigh, she said, "As long as I take advantage of this situation, I will get Stuart to fall in love with me. It will be like he is falling in love with his fiancée all over again. Then and only then, I will get everything that I want."
Hicks turned around and started staring at herself in the mirror again. Imaging the life she could have with Stuart. The opportunity to get rich was now in her own hands. Hicks raised her hand and touched her face, and suddenly, a meaningful smile appeared on her face.
The time was getting closer and closer to start the drama. Before she started filming, Edie wanted to ask Danny out for dinner. She was grateful for having him as an agent because Danny had helped her immensely.
When Edie first met Danny, he didn’t listen to other people’s opinions about Edie and took her on as a client instantly. He helped her pay back her student loan, and if it wasn’t for him, then she would still be trying to pay it back. Without his help, there was no chance of Edie getting any auditions.
However, Danny was a very busy man and worked late every night, so if Edie wanted to have dinner with him, it couldn’t be until later on in the evening.
Edie wanted to call Stuart to ask his permission but was worried that he would say no. Although Stuart was aware of Danny’s sexual orientation, he was a little reluctant to allow his wife to have dinner with another man. His tone when she asked was unpleasant and cold.
Edie came up with an idea to try and convince Stuart to let her go and said, "Stuart, I would like to take Rhonda and Gould out with me as well. I have never really thanked them for taking such good care of me."
Although Stuart was unwilling, he couldn’t resist Edie as she was pleading with him to let her go. She continued to call Stuart her "husband" and he finally agreed. With one exception, Edie had to be home by nine o’clock.
Edie chose a Japanese restaurant, and Danny spared no expense and ordered many expensive dishes. After dinner, Edie was getting ready to get in a taxi, and her phone suddenly rang. She thought it was Stuart. Without looking to see who it was, she answered and said, "Dear Husband of mine, I’m on my way home now. I will be there soon."
There was a moment of silence. Then he said, "Edie, it’s me."
Edie was taken by surprise, and her heart started beating fast. Then she suddenly thought, "It’s Donald, I can’t believe what I just said to him."
She felt awful for speaking improperly on the phone. Edie coughed twice and concealed her embarrassment as if nothing had happened and said, "Oh, it’s you. I thought it was Stuart calling me. Why are you calling me so late?"
Donald asked, "The last time we talked, I said that Joanna and I would like to ask you out for dinner as an apology. Do you remember?"
Edie vaguely remembered as it had been a few days ago. She looked at the time, and it was already half-past eight. It was too late to go out with Donald and Joanna now. Besides, she was not very enthused about having to go out with them. So, she said, "Oh, of course, I remember. Only it’s too late now. Let’s meet at another time when it’s more convenient."
The "next time" was an excuse for an indefinite delay. Donald obviously understood this. When he heard what Eddie said, he immediately asked, "So when would be a good time for you?"
When Donald spoke to Edie, he realized the nervousness was apparent in his voice. Then he quickly changed his tone and said, "I’m afraid Joanna is so busy and may not be able to make it. However, I am available at any time."
Edie thought to herself, "Joanna doesn’t have time? I haven’t heard anything about Joanna acting in any new dramas. She should have lots of time on her hands."
Edie only doubted it for a second and stopped as she didn’t want to make herself worry and start overthinking things. She did need to find a way to refuse Donald’s invitation politely. Since their relationship had ended on good terms, Edie didn’t want to have anything more to do with him.
While Edie was thinking, Donald said, "Actually, you don’t have to do this. I know it’s a lot to ask, and I know how happy you are. We really don’t need to meet again if you don’t want to."
However, that was not Donald’s intention at all. He was trying to guilt Edie into having dinner with him. On the phone, his voice was gentle, but his face revealed a sinister and troubled expression.
"It was Joanna who asked me to call you and ask you out for dinner. She feels sorry for all the things that she’s done, and she also wants to see me apologize to you in person," he said, trying to use a sympathetic tone of voice.
Edie thought about what he said, and there were a lot of things that Joanna had done to her in the past. She was a little curious about how Joanna was going to apologize to her because Joanna was an arrogant woman, and this wasn’t in her demeanor.
Edie hesitated and finally agreed, "Well, okay. I am starting a new drama in the next few days. So I will have a little time before it begins."
"That’s great! Does tomorrow work for you?" he asked as his voice was trembling, but it was hidden so well that Edie didn’t notice.
Edie thought about it and said, "Yes, I have time tomorrow."
"Okay, I will pick you up at five-thirty tomorrow," Donald spoke with excitement.
"Okay, I guess I will see you then," Edie replied, anxiousness in her tone.
Donald couldn’t believe how easily Edie agreed. After a moment of silence, he asked, "Will Stuart be coming with you?"
This was a problem for both of them. Edie thought about it, and since Start was so protective and had a strong personality, he would definitely not be pleased that she was having dinner with Donald. Edie was also afraid that Stuart would be angry. Therefore he would be in an awful mood.
After thinking about it, she said, "No, he has to work. It will only be me."
"Okay, then I will see you tomorrow," Donald replied as he tried to suppress the excitement in his tone and remained calm.
Then they hung the phone.
