Chapter 567: Chapter 566: You Did Better Than Anyone
Aunt Sienna was pushed back to the ward, and even though her condition was so severe, she was given fewer medications than before.
Aside from painkillers and nutritional fluids, no other prescriptions were issued since nothing else would help.
Bella Acker stayed by the bedside, looking at Aunt Sienna’s wrist, so thin that it was just skin and bones, and her face had thinned beyond recognition. Her heart ached, and her eyes turned red.
"Aunt Sienna, I’m sorry for making you endure this pain for so long."
"Silly Bella." Aunt Sienna, in a daze, tried to raise her hand as if to touch Bella Acker’s head, but she lacked the strength. Her hand lifted slightly before falling back down weakly.
Bella Acker, with red-rimmed eyes, took her hand and placed it on her forehead, just like she had done many times during her childhood.
Aunt Sienna rubbed her forehead, with affection in her eyes, saying "Silly Bella."
Bella Acker bit her lower lip tightly to keep herself from crying out loud.
Aunt Sienna’s fingers gently moved on her forehead before losing strength. Worried that holding her hand up would tire her, Bella Acker placed her hand back under the covers.
Aunt Sienna seemed to smile slightly before slipping back into unconsciousness.
Judy Zimmerman and Nanny Lloyd watched from the side, feeling heartbroken, but unsure how to comfort Bella.
Aunt Sienna was nearing death; that was an immutable fact. All they could do was stay by Bella Acker’s side, ensuring she didn’t face this alone.
The door to the ward opened from the outside, and Damian Sinclair walked in with large strides.
Nanny Lloyd stepped back two paces and bowed, "Master."
Judy Zimmerman also looked at Damian Sinclair, wondering why he was here when he was supposed to be taking Cecilia Lynch to the hospital.
Bella Acker heard the noise and looked over.
Seeing her red eyes, Damian silently walked up and held her hand.
Bella Acker looked up at him, tears breaking loose once more.
Even though their relationship was currently awkward and delicate, knowing he was there brought some reassurance to her frantic heart.
Damian Sinclair held her hand and softly asked, "Have you had lunch?"
Bella Acker shook her head. Judy Zimmerman said, "I’ll go buy some." With that, she left the ward.
Nanny Lloyd said, "I’ll go wash Aunt Sienna’s clothes." She left the ward as well, closing the door behind her.
Damian Sinclair pulled a chair over to sit beside Bella Acker, who was holding Aunt Sienna’s hand, tears on her face. "Aunt Sienna suffers a lot every day. If you hadn’t insisted on the hospital using the best pain relief available, she would be in even more pain. I know forcibly keeping her here just adds to her suffering, but I can’t bear to let go. Do you understand? Just thinking about the future when we’re separated by death and I can’t see her again, I can’t bear it. From childhood, Aunt Sienna and the orphanage director treated me like their own daughter. They are the closest people to me."
"I know," Damian Sinclair replied.
"Five years ago, I couldn’t keep the director, and now I just want to keep Aunt Sienna a little longer. What if... what if there’s a miracle?" In her heart she knew this was just wishful thinking, but she didn’t want to give up easily.
"You’ve done your best," Damian Sinclair said. "If it were anyone else in your situation, they wouldn’t have done it better than you."
Emotional crisis, Aunt Sienna’s severe illness, Ethan needing care, the urgency to work for medical expenses, attending training and exams... all these pressures, if faced by someone less resilient, could have led to a breakdown long ago.
