Chapter 617: Don’t Let Her Die

Looking at Yvonne, who passed out again, Michael told the people behind him, "Wake her up again! And increase the dosage of the poison."

The doctor quickly went forward and did as per Michael’s order.

Soon after, Yvonne woke up again, muddle-headed.

This time, the poison had almost made her gone mad.

She was losing consciousness.

"Where’s the antidote? This is the last time I’m asking you. If you don’t tell me now, I will kill you myself!" Michael said coldly.

"It’s at... " Yvonne was growing weak, and her voice became really soft.

Michael had no choice but moved closer to Yvonne. He heard her say, "At... " Yvonne couldn’t finish a complete sentence anymore.

Michael creased his eyebrows tightly, looking at Yvonne, who was on the verge of life and death. He told the doctor, "Give her some antidote."

The doctor immediately responded, "Yes, sir."

Yvonne, who had some antidote, slowly regained consciousness again.

Michael asked again, "Where is it?"

Yvonne swallowed her saliva with great difficulty. Then, she used all her strength to lift her head to look at Michael. She smiled, saying, "It’s at... at the balcony of the house we stayed in... " Michael immediately took out his phone and called Mr. York, commanding, "Search the balcony on the rooftop at my place. Don’t leave out any corner."

Yvonne watched as Michael made the call. She then added, "Michael, there is an antidote to the poison indeed... " Michael let out a breath of relief when he heard that.

"But... " Yvonne let out a creepy chuckle, "there’s only one portion."

"What did you say?" Michael’s face grew grave.

"Since the very beginning, I kept only one antidote. On the one hand, I’m trying to save myself. On the other hand, I want to see who you would save with this one antidote." Yvonne smirked coldly, saying, "Would you save your genius son, or would you save your adorable daughter?

"Michael, no matter who you save, the other child of yours will die because of you.

"By then, do you think Wendy will forgive you when she finds out about this?

"Even if she forgives you, would you be at ease for the rest of your life?"

"As long as I have the antidote, they can develop more antidote. This is not an issue," Michael said.

Yvonne taunted, "Is it so? If I remember correctly, your daughter had a flawed immune system by birth. The poison in her body should take effect very soon. She shouldn’t have much time left. Isn’t it?

"If she doesn’t eat the antidote within these two days, once she gets a fever, she would turn into an imbecile, disabled person even if she were to be saved in the end.

"I know you can spend money to find the best R&D team to develop an antidote. But Michael, developing an antidote needs time.

"And what you lack the most now is time.

"If you were to use the antidote for research, your daughter can’t afford to wait.

"If you were to opt for your daughter to eat the antidote and leave yourself with none for research purposes, you wouldn’t be able to develop a new antidote so quickly. You might even fail to develop one. In the end, your son might die from the poison.

"Michael, you still have to choose to only save one of them."

Whatever Yvonne said had vanished the string of hope Michael just had.

Could only save one of them?

No. He couldn’t listen to Yvonne’s one-sided speech.

Looking at Michael’s reaction, Yvonne chuckled coldly again and said, "Michael, do you think I am still the same old Yvonne Taylor? I came back this time with full preparation. I am no longer afraid of death. I am only afraid that I have no companion. Hahahahaha... "

...

What Yvonne said made Michael feel hopeless.

He saw a ray of hope earlier. Why was reality so cruel?

Michael gripped Yvonne’s hair tightly and bellowed, "Yvonne Taylor, just how much do you hate me that you came to this?

"Jake and Leah are just kids. Why do you have to be so cruel?"

"I’m cruel." Yvonne began to laugh hysterically. The smell of blood in her mouth emanated. "Michael, did you forget how you treated me back then?

"Didn’t I save you with the antidote? Back then, you wanted to take my life. Now, I am returning you one life. Isn’t this fair?

"Michael, I am really curious. Who would you choose to save?" Yvonne looked into Michael’s eyes morosely.

"There must be a way," Michael muttered to himself. He clenched his fists, trying to stay composed.

"I shall wait for your other way then." Yvonne felt smug. She seemed to have forgotten how painful her wounds were.

The satisfaction of revenge was creeping all over her.

Michael’s phone rang. freewebnσvel.cøm

It was Mr. York.

Michael took the call without hesitation.

Mr. York’s voice echoed from the other end of the line. "Mr. Lucas, we found the antidote, but it seems to be only one pill."

Michael wasn’t surprised to hear Mr. York’s report.

"Did you search the rooftop thoroughly?" Although he knew that the possibility of finding another antidote was low, he couldn’t help but ask.

Even if there was only a slight possibility.

He really couldn’t afford to make a ruthless decision.

"We’ve looked through the entire place. There’s only one," Mr. York replied over the phone.

"Besides the antidote, did you manage to find the poison?" Michael asked further.

"As of now, no. But I will have them keep looking. I will inform you right away if we find anything." Mr. York didn’t know how serious the matter was. He thought everything was fine as long as they found the antidote.

"Hmm. Send the antidote to the hospital immediately. Hand it to Milo," Michael ordered in a low and despondent voice.

Yvonne watched as Michael hung up. She chuckled again and said, "Is there only one pill? Michael, I will be waiting for your son or your daughter at the netherworld."

Michael gripped his phone tightly while he stared at Yvonne with his bloodshot eyes, questioning furiously, "You have more antidotes with you, don’t you?"

Yvonne came to such a point that even if she really had more antidotes, she wouldn’t hand them out.

"Michael, you already found the antidote. There’s only one. If you insist that there is more, go ahead and look for it," Yvonne said.

"Even if there is no more antidote, how about the poison? Where is the poison?"

Michael asked.

Finding the poison could help Michael develop an antidote. Though it would take time, it was better than nothing.

"Go and look for it yourself. Aren’t you very capable? I believe you can find it."

Yvonne’s mouth was tight.

Michael knew that he wouldn’t be able to find out anything from Yvonne.

With her current condition, she wouldn’t be able to hold on any longer after a few more hits.

He was still yet to confirm if the antidote was real or fake. He couldn’t let her die just yet.

Michael turned to the person next to him and said, "Watch her closely. Save her last breath. Don’t let her die. Continue to give her the itching poison. Only offer her some antidote when she is willing to tell us more about what I’m looking for."

He then left with Jake.

...

The mood in the car remained somber.

It was even more depressing than before.

The discovery of the antidote didn’t cheer anyone up.

Jake took the initiative to speak first. His tender voice sounded determined. "Give Leah the antidote."

It was within Michael’s expectation that Jake would say that.

He had always been a considerate child. He was willing to give up his life for his sister.

"How about you?" Jake volunteered to give up his life, but Michael couldn’t let Jake do that.

Just like Yvonne had said earlier, no matter who Michael chose to save, the other child of his would be in trouble because of his decision. He wouldn’t be able to live in peace for the rest of his life.

"I am not severely poisoned. I can still wait for the R&D team to develop the antidote, but Leah can’t afford to wait," Jake expressed calmly.

"Leah’s immune system was flawed since birth. The poison might trigger a relapse into her former illness.

"You might not know how terrifying her illness is, but I do.

"During the few years in Rheinsville City, I always kept Leah company in the hospital. She was saved from death multiple times.

"As for you and Aunt Zess...

"You are the least poisoned one. I reckon the doctor would be able to cure you completely even without the antidote.

"As for Aunt Zess, we can only make her wait with me and hope for the antidote to be developed soon," Jake analyzed calmly.

On top of that, he was dealing with his own worsening condition.

He was so young, yet he could think rationally. He would definitely be a successful person when he grew up.

His achievement would be greater than Michael’s.

Looking at his son, he couldn’t say things along the lines of "Be at ease" or "Wait for the antidote".

Michael hung his head low. He didn’t have the courage to look into Jake’s eyes. He said softly, "There must be other ways. There must be."

Jake looked outside the window.

He said coldly, "What I’ve just said concerns the lack of other options."

Let’s head to the hospital first and see what Milo says. Hopefully, Yvonne is lying to us," Michael said, holding onto the last bit of hope.

Jake responded with a short hum and didn’t say anything else.

Michael went straight to Milo’s office when they arrived at the hospital.

Milo had been waiting for them.

"How is it?" Michael asked right away.

"Have a glass of water first," Milo said, pouring Michael and Jake a glass of water each. He then continued, "Stay calm. They just sent the antidote over. Leah just did a full body check-up as well. I already made arrangements for her to get admitted to the hospital so we can monitor her 24/7. It will take a little while more until the result is out. Take a rest here."

"I’ll go and see Leah then. Where is she?" Michael asked Milo as he stood up.

"I’ll walk with you there," Milo said, leading the way.

Leah was sitting on her bed, reading a book.

She didn’t know anything as of yet. She smiled occasionally while reading her book.

Looking at his adorable daughter, Michael felt his heart aching when he thought of things that Yvonne did.

"Daddy! Jake!" Leah greeted excited the moment she saw Michael and Jake.

Michael forced himself to smile. He tried hard to control his emotions.

He walked next to Leah’s bed. Then, he carried her and hugged her tightly in his arms.

"Daddy, you are hugging me too tightly. I can’t breathe..." Leah tried to break away from Michael’s embrace.
