Chapter 46: Chapter 46 The Empty Signature

Rose knew Ryan was still at the hospital.

He had set aside all of his work to stay with Samantha’s younger brother, whose injury had ultimately turned out to be nothing more than a minor scrape.

At least that saved her the trouble of tracking Ryan down herself.

Ariel was hooked up to an IV.

The bump on her head had been cleaned and treated.

The little girl had finally fallen asleep.

Rose gently tucked the blanket around her daughter.

Only then did the icy ache in her chest begin to ease.

Just then, Martha arrived on the same floor carrying the file folder Rose had requested.

Rose quietly slipped out of the room.

Having lost one of her shoes earlier, she limped slightly, one bare foot touching the cold hospital floor.

The moment she stepped out of the ward, Ryan glanced over from the corridor.

His gaze swept over her.

From head to toe.

It paused on her bare foot.

Then drifted back toward the hospital room behind her.

"Mr. Knight, the matter at the police station has been resolved."

Owen’s voice came through the phone. "Ms. Robinson didn’t insist on pursuing it."

Ryan slipped one hand into his pocket.

His eyes remained fixed on the ward door. "Was anyone injured?"

"I believe so."

Owen hesitated. "Apparently there was a child in Ms. Robinson’s car. The child wasn’t there when I arrived."

Ryan’s eyes darkened. "A Robinson family child?"

"That’s what I heard. The mother took the child away immediately for treatment after the accident."

By then, Ryan had already reached the hospital room.

His hand settled on the doorknob.

"Understood."

He ended the call.

The door opened slightly.

Just then—

"Ryan. We need to talk."

A voice sounded behind him.

Ryan paused.

Turning around, he saw Rose.

She had apparently rushed up the stairs.

Her low bun had partially come undone.

One of her bare feet had been scraped somewhere along the way.

A thin streak of blood stained her pale skin.

The contrast made her foot appear almost painfully white.

Rose’s face remained expressionless.

But only she knew how violently her heart was pounding.

Cold sweat dampened her back.

She had never expected to find Ryan standing outside Ariel’s hospital room.

Ryan rarely saw her in such a disheveled state.

His dark eyes lingered on her for a moment.

Then he quietly closed the door.

His brows furrowed. "What happened?"

Rose ignored the question.

Instead, she raised the file folder in her hand.

Martha had brought it over only minutes ago.

She hadn’t needed to open it.

She knew every word inside by heart.

Seven years ago, those words had carved themselves into her memory.

And now she intended to pull out the thorn that had been lodged in her heart for seven long years.

Taking a slow breath, she met Ryan’s piercing gaze.

Her voice was calm.

"Ryan."

"Let’s get divorced."

For the first time, something seemed to flicker in Ryan’s eyes.

A darkness.

A depth.

Yet his expression remained unreadable.

He simply stared at her.

Silent.

Rose wasn’t surprised.

Ryan had always excelled at ignoring her.

At withholding answers.

She stepped forward and pressed the file folder into his hands.

Her voice was lighter than it had been in years.

"Let’s stop dragging this out."

She smiled faintly. "Our ending was decided from the beginning."

"I’ll be at the courthouse tomorrow."

Her eyes met his. "I’ll send you the time."

Then she added, "Don’t be late."

She had never realized before how long three months could feel.

If the marriage was doomed anyway, why wait?

Ryan glanced down at the folder.

Then back at her.

His voice was cool. "Is this because of Diana?"

Rose nearly laughed.

Because of Diana?

Was that all he saw?

Years of disappointment.

Years of neglect.

Countless wounds.

In his eyes, it all boiled down to a single incident.

A single inconvenience.

It was almost amusing.

He clearly knew Samantha crossed boundaries.

He knew she hurt people.

He simply didn’t believe it mattered.

Because Samantha’s happiness outweighed everything else.

Rose wanted to tell him that a failed marriage was never caused by one event.

It happened slowly.

A thousand tiny disappointments.

Small hurts that accumulated until they became a blade driven straight through the heart.

And today—

Today his favoritism had nearly harmed Ariel.

But did any of that matter anymore?

The marriage was already dead.

The cause of death was irrelevant.

"You can think whatever you want."

She tilted her head slightly.

Her smile was bright.

But her eyes were empty.

"Ryan."

"I wish you well."

She truly meant it.

May his future be everything he wanted.

May the relationship he had protected for so many years finally bear fruit.

Without another word, she walked past him.

Then entered Ariel’s room.

A second later—

Click.

The lock engaged.

Ryan turned around.

His sharp eyes settled on the closed door.

This was the first time Rose had ever spoken seriously about divorce.

There had been no tears.

No tantrums.

No pleading.

No reluctance.

Only calm acceptance.

For a long moment, Ryan stood motionless.

Then he looked down at the folder again.

Without opening it, he headed toward the nurses’ station.

The nurse on duty immediately stood up.

"Mr. Knight, can I help you?"

Ryan asked casually, "The child in Room 2013. What’s her name?"

The nurse searched the records. "Ariel Robinson."

Ryan paused. "Ariel?"

His eyes narrowed slightly. "A girl?"

The nurse nodded. "Yes. Ariel Robinson."

Robinson.

So she really was a child from the Robinson family.

Ryan’s expression remained unchanged.

"Ryan?"

A familiar voice interrupted his thoughts.

Oliver had arrived.

The moment he learned something had happened to Samantha, he had rushed over to check on her.

Recently, his grandfather had been talking about Samantha nonstop.

It was obvious the old man genuinely cared about her.

That naturally made Oliver more concerned as well.

"What are you doing here?"

Ryan lowered his hand. "Nothing."

"Is Mike okay?"

"Just a scraped elbow." Ryan’s tone was indifferent.

"Nothing serious."

Oliver’s gaze landed on the file folder. "What are you holding?"

He smirked. "Looks important."

Ryan looked down.

After a brief pause, he tore open the seal.

He pulled out the documents inside.

The bold words at the top immediately caught his attention.

DIVORCE AGREEMENT

Oliver’s eyebrows shot up.

Then he laughed. "Ryan, are you finally divorcing Rose?"

Ryan’s expression didn’t change. "No."

Oliver blinked. "Huh?"

Ryan held up the documents. "Rose gave these to me."

Oliver’s smile disappeared.

His brows knitted together. "She did?"

His voice sharpened. "What gives her the right to ask for a divorce?"

What exactly was Rose trying to do now?

Ryan didn’t answer.

Instead, he lowered his gaze and began reading.

Page after page.

Clause after clause.

The further he read, the darker his expression became.

By the end, a faint, almost imperceptible sneer tugged at the corner of his mouth.

Finally, he flipped to the signature page.

The place reserved for Rose’s signature was empty.

Blank.

She hadn’t signed it.
