Chapter 45: Chapter 45 The Divorce Cannot Wait
Rose quickly pieced together the entire sequence of events.
So that was why Ryan had been called away.
"Weren’t they the ones who got hit by a car?"
"Bullshit."
Diana’s face darkened instantly. "I reacted fast enough. That chubby kid was running across the road like he owned it. If I hadn’t been trying so hard not to hit him, none of this would’ve happened."
Her anger flared again. "And when Samantha called the police, she claimed I was speeding, trying to flee the scene, and even accused me of hitting her. Otherwise, why would we be sitting in a police station right now?"
Thinking about it still made Diana furious.
After calming Ariel down, she had gotten out of the car to deal with the situation.
Samantha had immediately shoved her.
Naturally, Diana wasn’t about to stand there and take it.
She shoved Samantha right back.
But somehow, in Samantha’s version of events, that had become assault.
After cursing under her breath, Diana suddenly remembered Ariel was right there.
She immediately crouched down and awkwardly covered Ariel’s ears.
Ariel blinked and gave her a sweet smile.
Diana’s heart melted on the spot.
Rose recalled Samantha’s phone call.
The way she’d sounded so wounded.
So aggrieved.
As though she were the victim in all of this.
But now...
"The police are reviewing the surveillance footage."
Diana gritted her teeth. "But Samantha insists everything was my fault and keeps demanding an explanation."
Even though she was trying to stay calm in front of Ariel, the fury in her voice was impossible to hide.
If it weren’t for Mike’s reckless behavior, Ariel wouldn’t have been frightened.
She wouldn’t have hit her head.
And she certainly wouldn’t be running a fever.
At that moment, a police officer approached.
"Ms. Robinson, the other party has gone to the hospital for an injury assessment. Since this wasn’t a major accident, perhaps both parties can work out a settlement."
Rose frowned. "What about the surveillance footage?"
The officer shook his head. "That area happens to be a blind spot in the camera coverage. We’ll need to pull footage from other angles, so it’ll take some time."
Diana immediately scoffed. "A hotel that large has surveillance blind spots? You’ve got to be kidding."
But then...
"Ryan is handling it." Rose lowered her eyes and spoke calmly.
Diana instantly fell silent.
She understood exactly what Rose meant.
If Samantha was determined to make things difficult, then manipulating surveillance footage would be nothing more than a phone call away for Ryan.
Rose took a slow breath.
Then she crouched beside Ariel and gently touched her swollen forehead.
Her fingers trembled. "Call them."
Ariel needed medical treatment immediately.
The bump on her head couldn’t wait.
Neither could the fever.
A child’s condition could deteriorate very quickly.
They needed to resolve this and get to the hospital as soon as possible.
Feeling the heat radiating from Ariel’s forehead, Rose’s heart felt as though it were being crushed.
Suppressing her emotions, she carefully transferred Ariel into Diana’s arms.
"I’ll handle it."
Ariel’s cheeks were bright red from the fever.
Her eyes were watery from discomfort.
Rose couldn’t bear to keep her waiting any longer.
She simply couldn’t.
Fortunately, she still had Samantha’s phone number.
Back when Samantha had been her future sister-in-law, they had exchanged contact information.
Rose dialed.
The call was immediately rejected.
She called again.
Rejected again.
The message couldn’t have been clearer.
Samantha was deliberately making her wait.
Rose stared at her phone expressionlessly before turning to the officer.
"Could you try calling them?"
Sure enough, the officer’s call went through.
But Samantha wasn’t the one who answered.
Instead, Ryan’s cold, familiar voice came through the speaker.
"Sorry. She was having her injuries treated and couldn’t answer."
Rose’s fingers tightened involuntarily.
Every detail involving Samantha received his full attention.
Yet his own daughter sat injured and frightened in a police station, waiting for help that would never come.
Then Samantha’s voice came through.
Firm.
Resolute.
"No forgiveness. No settlement."
Her tone was unwavering. "My brother was hurt because of them. I want them detained."
Rose stared at the phone.
Waiting.
Waiting for Ryan’s response.
Finally—
His calm, clear voice came through the receiver. "Then do whatever is necessary."
Rose felt her heart drop.
Drop all the way to the ground.
Then be crushed beneath someone’s heel.
Once again, she witnessed the depth of her husband’s devotion to another woman.
The police officer shifted awkwardly.
Then he suggested, "Sir, perhaps you could come to the station so we can discuss this in person."
Immediately, Rose’s entire body tensed.
Her eyes instinctively darted toward Ariel, who sat quietly in Diana’s arms.
She opened her mouth. "I won’t—"
But before she could finish, Ryan answered calmly, "No, thank you."
His voice remained indifferent. "The child is throwing a tantrum and won’t let me leave."
Those words hit Rose like a bucket of ice water.
She froze.
Then laughed inwardly.
Of course.
He couldn’t bear to leave.
He doted on Mike—a child unrelated to him by blood—as though he were his own.
If Ryan ever learned that the choice he made today caused him to miss his own biological daughter...
Would he regret it?
Rose didn’t even bother considering the answer.
She already knew it didn’t matter.
Clenching her fists, she spoke slowly, emphasizing every word. "Ryan."
Her eyes burned with cold bitterness. "I’m taking Diana out of this police station right now."
Her voice was steady. "Either you deal with Samantha..."
She paused. "Or I will."
Ariel couldn’t wait any longer.
She needed medical treatment immediately.
For her daughter’s sake, Rose was willing to burn every bridge she had left.
The room fell silent.
Everyone understood what she meant.
Including Ryan.
It was a threat.
A warning.
After all, Samantha was a public figure now.
A scandal could destroy the image she had worked so hard to build.
The silence stretched.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Then the call disconnected.
Without another word.
Cold.
Final.
Ruthless.
The abrupt dial tone felt like a slap across Rose’s face.
A chill spread through her entire body.
This was Ryan’s answer.
Taking a deep breath, she turned away and walked back toward Ariel.
The bump on Ariel’s forehead had swollen noticeably.
Tears glistened in the little girl’s eyes from the pain.
Yet she never cried.
Never complained.
Her quiet resilience only made Rose’s heart ache more.
Just as Rose picked Ariel up and prepared to leave regardless of the consequences, a police officer hurried over.
"The other party has agreed to mediation."
Rose’s eyes were red.
A cold smile tugged at her lips.
Agreed to mediation?
Was that supposed to be mercy?
No.
Ryan simply feared she might expose Samantha publicly.
He had weighed the risks.
Calculated the costs.
Then generously decided to let them go.
That was all.
Diana stayed behind to complete the paperwork.
Meanwhile, Rose carried Ariel into the freezing wind and rushed to the nearest hospital.
Ariel had been frail since birth.
Despite years of expensive supplements and careful treatment, she had never fully overcome her congenital health issues.
She got sick easily.
And when she did, it often became serious.
Rose refused to take any chances.
By the time she reached the hospital entrance, she had been running so desperately that one of her shoes had fallen off.
She hadn’t even noticed.
Doctors and nurses quickly arrived to examine Ariel.
Rose stood beside the bed, her face pale as she held Ariel’s tiny hand.
Once settled beneath a blanket, Ariel turned her head.
Then she reached up and gently wiped the corner of Rose’s eye.
"Mommy."
Her voice was soft. "Don’t cry."
She smiled weakly. "It doesn’t hurt anymore."
"I’ll be brave and get my shot."
Then she added proudly, "I’ll get better soon."
Rose finally let out a shaky breath.
She gently ruffled Ariel’s hair. "Mommy knows."
The fever made Ariel drift in and out of sleep.
Later, while Rose was paying the hospital bill, something caught her eye.
Not far away, Ryan’s tall figure moved through the crowd.
In his arms was Mike.
The boy looked perfectly healthy.
Completely unharmed.
He was happily playing with a toy airplane.
Ryan carefully adjusted the blanket around him before escorting him toward a private hospital room.
Samantha followed closely behind.
She was carrying Ryan’s coat.
The three of them looked like a perfect family.
A harmonious family of three.
Rose thought of Ariel.
Of everything her daughter had endured today.
The fear.
The injury.
The fever.
The police station.
And then she looked at Ryan.
The man who had rushed to protect Samantha’s brother without hesitation.
Rose stood there holding the payment receipt.
Watching the endless stream of people pass by.
Her expression remained blank.
Slowly, she lifted her eyes toward the harsh fluorescent lights overhead.
No one knew how long she stood there.
Finally, she took out her phone and made a call.
"Martha." Her voice was calm. "Could you bring me the file folder I left at Villa?"
Although she and Ryan had signed the divorce agreement seven years ago, there were still two and a half months remaining before the waiting period ended and the divorce became final.
But now...
She couldn’t wait another day.
Ryan was already here.
At this hospital.
And Rose had made up her mind.
She was going to find him.
Then she was going to drag him to the courthouse and finalize the divorce immediately.
