Chapter 47: Chapter 47 Desperate for a Child
Oliver noticed the blank signature line at the bottom of the agreement as well.
Earlier, while Ryan had been reviewing the divorce agreement, Oliver had read through every clause himself.
In the end, he let out a derisive snort.
"I knew it."
He shook his head. "Rose doesn’t have the nerve to ask you for a divorce."
His lips curled into a mocking smile. "Who in their right mind would agree to terms like these?"
He tapped the agreement. "Didn’t you find these conditions ridiculous?"
Several clauses stood out in particular:
1.If they divorced, Ryan would have to give Rose half of his assets.
2.For ten years after the divorce, Ryan could not marry Samantha, give her legal status as his wife, or have children with her.
3.The divorce could proceed only after Ryan gave Rose a child. Once she became pregnant, they would officially complete the divorce.
Oliver couldn’t help laughing.
"Does this look like someone who genuinely wants a divorce?"
He scoffed. "This is just someone throwing a tantrum."
Ryan remained expressionless.
Oliver continued, "Rose must know you’d never agree to these terms."
"That’s why she’s acting so bold."
The agreement was obviously an emotional outburst.
A document with no practical value whatsoever. "She doesn’t want a divorce at all."
Oliver sounded certain. "She’s convinced you’ll never sign it."
Did Rose really have no idea how much Ryan was worth?
Half his assets?
The demand was outrageous.
And forbidding him from marrying Samantha for ten years?
Was she trying to waste Samantha’s youth?
As for the clause requiring Ryan to give her a child before the divorce—
Oliver almost laughed again.
The calculation behind it was painfully obvious.
If Rose actually had a child with Ryan, would she ever agree to divorce afterward?
She would only use the child to strengthen her position and bind herself to him even more tightly.
The scheme was so transparent that it was almost laughable.
"Ryan."
Oliver glanced at him. "You’re not actually going to entertain this nonsense, are you?"
"I don’t have time for it."
Ryan’s expression never changed.
He looked down at the agreement one final time.
Then he walked toward the trash can near the stairwell.
Holding the papers between two fingers, he tore them into pieces.
The shredded pages fell into the trash.
Oliver finally relaxed.
At least Ryan hadn’t been influenced by Rose’s latest stunt.
"Aren’t you going to talk to her about it?"
Ryan started down the stairs.
"No."
"If she wants to make a scene, let her."
As for the agreement—
He would simply pretend he had never seen it.
Oliver immediately understood.
A smile appeared on his face. "I get it."
"Ignore her."
"Eventually she’ll understand that some lines can’t be crossed."
He clicked his tongue.
Once again, all of Rose’s efforts had gone to waste.
To challenge Ryan, she needed leverage.
Clearly, she still didn’t understand her place.

The Knight Residence
Back at the Knight family estate, Martha had just returned.
Margaret was still in the Buddhist shrine.
As she listened to Martha’s report, she slowly rose from her meditation cushion.
"So Rose is truly serious about this divorce."
"Madam."
Martha lowered her voice. "The agreement Mrs. Knight signed has already been replaced."
"There shouldn’t be any problems now, right?"
Margaret sighed. "The last time I brought up the clause prohibiting remarriage into the Knight family, I only meant to frighten her."
A trace of helplessness crossed her face.
"I wanted her to give up on the divorce."
"I never expected her to remain so determined."
But if the divorce actually happened—
The Knight family would lose its peace.
The Hill family had been waiting for years.
Samantha was watching from the sidelines, eager to step into Rose’s position.
Margaret couldn’t simply stand by and do nothing.
"Madam."
Martha hesitated. "Can we really keep this from Mr. Knight forever?"
"What if he confronts his wife after he gets home?"
"Wouldn’t the truth come out then?"
"It won’t." Margaret sounded certain. "Ryan is far too shrewd."
She smiled faintly. "He’ll treat that ridiculous agreement as though it never existed."
"When have you ever seen Ryan and Rose argue?"
Martha fell silent.
It was true.
Throughout all these years, their marriage had been strangely quiet.
If Ryan had cared even a little more about Rose, perhaps they could have sat down and talked things through.
Maybe things wouldn’t have reached this point.
As for Rose...
Margaret would have to find another way to keep her under control.
"But Madam." Martha frowned. "The two divorce agreements are real."
"They were arranged by the former chairman seven years ago."
"Once the three-month period ends, the divorce will still take effect."
Margaret’s expression darkened.
Martha had discovered the truth only because she happened to glimpse the documents in the folder.
After making discreet inquiries, Margaret learned something surprising.
Ryan had never known the divorce agreement had already been signed.
The truth would eventually come to light.
A strange look flashed across her eyes.
"At the very least..."
She slowly rolled the prayer beads between her fingers.
"Every extra day we buy is another day of peace."
Martha couldn’t understand her reasoning.
If Margaret truly didn’t want Samantha entering the family, there were countless other ways to stop it.
Why insist on dragging Rose into the situation?
And from Martha’s perspective, Rose had married exceptionally well.
She had a husband like Ryan Knight.
What more could she possibly want?
Even if a powerful man occasionally had affairs—
Wasn’t that normal?
If Rose couldn’t accept that reality, wasn’t she making her own life difficult?
Suddenly, Martha gasped.
"Madam..."
"What if Mrs. Knight has someone else?"
Her eyes widened. "Otherwise, why would she be in such a hurry to divorce?"
Margaret’s fingers froze.
A rare trace of displeasure crossed her usually serene face.
She turned sharply toward Martha. "The Knight family does not tolerate rumors that damage our reputation."
Her voice was cold. "Watch your words."
Martha’s face immediately turned pale.
She lowered her head. "Yes, Madam."
Margaret remained silent for a long moment.
Then she turned back toward the Buddha statue.
"Find out who Rose has been meeting recently."

The Hospital
Shortly after returning to Ariel’s room, Rose heard a knock at the door.
She immediately got up and unlocked it.
A nurse entered to check Ariel’s temperature.
After finishing, the nurse paused.
Then she handed Rose a brand-new pair of Birkenstock-style slippers from the supply cart.
"You should wear these."
She smiled. "I noticed your feet are covered in blisters."
Rose blinked in surprise. "For me?"
The nurse nodded.
Then she handed over two disposable iodine swabs. "I happened to have an extra pair."
Her smile widened. "Don’t be shy."
Before Rose could refuse, the nurse hurried away.
Rose looked down at the slippers.
Then checked the size.
They were exactly her size.
She couldn’t help staring.
Was she really that lucky?
She had been planning to ask Diana to bring her shoes.
Now she didn’t have to.
After disinfecting the scrape on her toe, she slipped on the slippers.
A small smile appeared on her face.
No matter how cold the world could be...
There were still kind people in it.
Silently, she awarded the nurse a mental "Good Samaritan" badge.
Fortunately, Ariel’s fever finally broke.
Rose stayed awake the entire night watching over her.
Even so, she couldn’t stop worrying about the divorce.
After checking the time, she decided to have Diana come over shortly.
She hadn’t told Nathan about Ariel’s accident.
Nathan and the others adored Ariel.
If they found out, they would be furious.
Diana arrived carrying breakfast.
After gently touching Ariel’s rosy cheeks, she lowered her voice.
"Is it really that urgent?"
"Do you absolutely have to leave right now?"
Rose glanced at the sleeping child.
Then she straightened her clothes. "Yes."
"What for?"
Rose answered calmly. "To get divorced."
Diana’s eyes nearly popped out. "What the hell?"
She stared. "That suddenly?"
Rose turned toward the window.
The sky outside was gray and heavy.
Snow seemed imminent.
The northern wind howled against the glass.
"It isn’t sudden."
Her voice was quiet. "I’ve been preparing for this moment for a very long time."
If Ryan’s actions hadn’t nearly affected Ariel...
Perhaps she could have waited a little longer.
In a strange way, she should probably thank him.
He had finally shown her exactly who he was.
Diana stepped forward and wrapped her in a hug. "I’ll wait for you to come back."
Then she added fiercely, "Go kick that scumbag to the curb and start living for yourself."
Rose laughed softly.
Then nodded.
A few minutes later, she left the hospital.
She hailed a cab and headed straight for the courthouse.
Along the way, she called Ryan.
The call went directly to voicemail.
Whether he was busy or had deliberately ignored the call, she couldn’t tell.
Nor did she care enough to try again.
Instead, she opened her messages and sent a single text:
