Chapter 38: A Bad Thing Has Come 1
A bad thing has come.
Corrine stared up from her phone, looking left and right, searching for the meaning behind this weird prediction.
It was the same thing last night when she checked but in a different wording and she didn’t want to think the prediction was some random AI-generated ones made by the app.
But, if it was so, why is she always getting cursed instead of her fortune read?
’’I don’t pay you eight dollars per month just to curse me out.’’ Corrine’s frown deepened as she logged out of the fortune–telling app and considered getting rid of it.
Ruby was the one who made her love fortune–telling. At times, when they are tired of talking to their toys for hours, Ruby will take her to the attic. They will dim the lights and get to play all kinds of silly games and read each other’s fortune.
She thought getting her fortune read by AI will fill in that part of her she misses the most.
Corrine stepped out of her car and slammed the door hard enough to gain the attention of the security guards loitering around. She jammed the key into the lock and twisted it harder than necessary.
’’Stupid AI,’’ she cursed out before walking up towards the building.
’’Good morning ma’am.’’
She nodded, moving past them quickly when they all greeted her today. They all had a welcoming smile on their faces which could be considered ’’the bad thing’’ since they mostly weren’t sincere with her in their greetings.
Even the elevators have been repaired and working perfectly fine today.
’’Huh?’’ Corrine blinked, having her doubts about it and chose to take the stairs instead till she saw one person successfully getting to their floor without any issues.
She took the first step and felt sick to her stomach, making her strangely dizzy. She thought she was having another episode of her illness.
But it was different this time.
The higher she went, the more it felt like reaching for the coldest part of the world. The air felt sick and heavy, it disturbed her a lot and wondering if she was the only one feeling this way.
Corrine has decided to give that...little creep a chance. Not because of what he did yesterday or anything ridiculous he ever did, but she felt like that creep was capable of making her lose her loyal employees. Those who have been with her since day one.
Corrine sighed as she reached the top and it felt like she had just climbed Mount Everest instead of a few flights of stairs.
She was not necessarily going to accept him and all of his weirdness all at once but she was going to be giving him a bit of breathing room. Make him more comfortable with them and by the time he lets his guard down...
Corrine pushed her way through the door and stepped into the cool space of her office.
The moment he let his guard down around them, they would finally learn who he truly was. His true colors would show and maybe by then, her faithful employees will not hesitate then to throw him out or let him rot in jail forever.
Corrine’s heart sank to the depths of a dark pit as a strange yet familiar aura welcomed her.
It forbade her from taking another step and Berry turned to her, feeling relieved and grateful for her arrival.
They were all waiting nervously behind their work desk, visibly distressed.
A certain dark cloud materialized from above their heads, spreading its dark wings all across the room, swallowing every trace of light and sunshine. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com
Corrine didn’t blink, feeling drained instantly from head to toe. Her heart raced as everything around her seemed to blur and fade away. Becoming one dull, messy array of dark clouds.
She got consumed by the darkness and for a moment she was alone.
Tears pooled at the corner of her eyes, her heart beat syncing with his predatory footsteps.
Corrine was instantly overwhelmed, wondering why she was still yet to make a single move.
To run as fast as she could before she was trapped once again.
Enslaved by power, stripped completely of her conscience and made a monster for the greater good.
’’Anais.’’
The voice brought her out of that oppressive state, stealing the breath from her lungs.
’’When you give it all up, for a dream. I have been curious about that dream. The dream that lured you out of your privileged life.’’ freewēbnoveℓ.com
He paused just near enough to make her hands tremble on their own.
’’A life this dream can never return or replace with something better.’’
Corrine’s eyes remained fixed on Berry. And Lin thought of calling the cops right away at how stressed and emotionally drained their Boss became in the presence of this man. But looking at the man, Lin wondered why he felt calling the law enforcement would be useless in getting him out of their safe place.
They wondered who he was and how related this stranger was to their Boss.
’’A dream that took my daughter from me and led her astray. It gave her a terrible disease,’’ his dark lips moved, taunting her as he was close enough to break her down completely until there was nothing else to pick.
’’I am not so impressed by this dream. And it’s time you give it up as well and come home with me,’’ his words made home sound almost irresistible.
Corrine found herself tilting her head a bit to the side, tears streaming down her face as he triggered so many unforgettable memories about home.
’’Come home with me.’’
Berry stared about looking worried at what this man was doing to their boss. Whatever it was, Boss appeared to be far beyond their reach.
She wanted to do something.
They were trembling, drenched in sweat from head to toe. Stylie was curled up in a corner retching her guts out and Berry feared that whatever this man was doing to them—they might not hold out much longer.
Berry grabbed her phone, trembling as she stared at the dozen of messages she bombarded a particular contact on her phone with. Almost breaking down in tears when there wasn’t a single response from the contact.
Berry bit down hard on her nails wondering what to do. How was she going to save Boss, herself, Lin and Stylie from this strange man.
Beside her, Lin collapsed on the chair and she hurried over to him. He seemed tired and drained like the rest of them and barely holding on and Berry burst into tears not knowing what to do. She tried calming a bit to think clearly but it seemed like this entity had completely paralyzed them all with fear that their brains were too scared to come up with a solution. Then she considered dragging Lin out of the room first.
’’Your friends will die,’’ Stylie vomited again, clutching her abdomen, wondering why she was feeling so sick all of a sudden. ’’And I have many more ugly things prepared for your surrender.’’
’’Interesting. Do tell me more.’’
Neal’s dark grey eyes thinned into slits as he stared from his daughter to lock eyes with the greater entity that stepped in.
