Chapter 88: Chapter 88

Riley’s POV

The moment I entered the cave, the smell hit me so hard that I froze in the entrance like a statue. It was sharp and strong and very obvious that something violent had just happened here. It smelled like blood, sweat, anger, and something wild that made my stomach twist. I did not even know what to call it, but even a human like me could tell that a serious fight had taken place.

I slowly stepped forward, my heart beating so fast that I could hear it in my ears. The ground was covered with scattered stones and broken pieces of rock as if something very large had smashed everything in here. Some parts of the cave wall were cracked, and there were deep claw marks everywhere. I stared at one of them and swallowed hard because that mark alone was bigger than my entire arm.

"Okay Riley," I whispered to myself, "this is fine, this is completely fine, nothing to be worried about, just walk into the horror movie like the stupid girl you are and die first."

My voice echoed in the cave, and I immediately slapped my own mouth.

"Why are you talking?" I whispered again. "Do you want them to hear you? Do you want to die? Because this is how people die. This is exactly how it starts. First you talk, then you fall, then something eats you."

I stood there for a few seconds, waiting for something to jump out and attack me.

Nothing happened.

I exhaled slowly and kept walking, but every single step felt heavy. The silence inside the cave was not normal. It was too quiet. Even the air felt stiff and heavy.

My eyes moved everywhere, trying to see if something was hiding in the shadows.

Then I stopped.

I slapped my own head this time.

"Ow! Okay, focus. Focus. You need the fur. You need to leave. You need to not die."

I kept walking deeper into the cave, but the more I moved, the more nervous I became. The smell of the fight was stronger here, and there were actual drops of blood on the ground.

I stared at them.

"Blood. That is definitely blood. That is not tomato sauce. This is not a restaurant. This is a fucking murder cave."

My legs began shaking.

"What if the wolves are already here?" I muttered.

I turned slowly and looked behind me.

Nothing.

I turned back.

"Okay good, they are not here. Maybe they already left. Maybe they finished fighting and went to drink tea somewhere. Yes, wolves drink tea after violence. That sounds right."

I nodded to myself like I was convincing my own brain.

Then suddenly my foot stepped on something soft.

I froze.

Very slowly, I looked down.

It was a huge tuft of silver fur.

My eyes widened.

"Oh my God."

I bent down slowly and picked it up.

"Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God."

I stared at it like it was gold.

"This is it. This is the fur. Riley, you are a genius. You have done it. You are going home. You are alive. You are brilliant. You are—"

Then I paused.

"Wait."

I looked around again.

"Why would it be so easy? This is suspicious. This is very suspicious. Nothing in my life has ever been easy. Something is wrong."

I quickly stood up and looked everywhere.

"Maybe it is a trap. Yes. This is definitely a trap. The wolves are probably watching me right now and laughing. They are like, "Look at this stupid human, she thinks she is smart."

I glared at the darkness.

"No, Riley is not stupid," I whispered angrily. "She is just... occasionally confused."

The silence remained.

I took another step forward, holding the fur tightly.

Then I saw something that made my heart stop.

There were deep drag marks on the ground, like something huge had been pulled across the cave. My eyes followed the marks, and they led deeper inside.

"No," I said immediately. "No. I am not following that. I refuse. I choose life. I choose peace. I choose to go back."

I turned around quickly.

Then I stopped again.

"What if this is the wrong fur?" I asked myself.

I looked at the silver fur in my hand.

"What if I go back and they say this is from a baby wolf or something? What if they say, oh sorry Riley, you brought the wrong one, please go back and die properly this time?"

I groaned loudly.

"This is stressful. Why is my life like this? Why can I not just stay in bed and eat snacks like a normal person?"

I turned back again and stared at the drag marks.

"This is how stupid decisions are made. This is how horror movies start. This is exactly how it starts."

I stood there for a full minute arguing with myself.

Then I sighed.

"Fine. I will just look. Just a little. Just to confirm. Then I will leave. I will not be stupid. I will not die."

I walked forward again.

The deeper I went, the darker the cave became. My eyes were slowly adjusting, but everything still looked scary. I could hear drops of water falling somewhere far away.

"Okay, this is creepy. This is very creepy. Why is it so dark? Where is the light? Who turned off the freaking sun?"

I kept moving, my breathing getting faster.

Then suddenly I heard something.

A low sound.

Like a growl.

I froze instantly.

My entire body went stiff.

"Did you hear that?" I whispered to myself.

"Yes, you heard that. That was not my imagination. That was real. That was definitely real."

I slowly turned my head left. Nothing.

I turned right. Still nothing.

"Okay, maybe it was just the wind."

Then I paused.

"There is no wind in a cave. Congratulations Riley, you are about to die."

I started walking faster.

"Let us leave. Let us go home. Let us survive. We can cry later."

My steps echoed loudly, and I hated the sound.

Then suddenly I felt it.

A heavy presence. Right the fuck behind me.

The air changed. The temperature dropped and my heart stopped.

My hands began shaking and the fur I was holding fell to the ground.

Every instinct in my body screamed at me.

Do not turn.

But I slowly turned anyway. freewebnøvel.com

And the moment I did, I shouted at the top of my lungs.

"OH MY FUCKING GOD PLEASE WAIT BEFORE YOU EAT ME!"
