Chapter 89: Chapter 89

Riley’s POV

My eyes widened so hard I was convinced they were about to fall out of my face and roll somewhere on the cave floor because what I was staring at right now were three massive large forms of— I did not even know what to call them.

Wolves? Monsters? Mythical government experiments? Whatever they were, they were huge, and I mean huge like "why-is-this-even-allowed-to-exist" huge.

They were taller than anything I had ever seen in my life and their bodies were built like pure violence.

Their fur was thick and dark and looked like it could swallow light. Their eyes were glowing in a way that made me feel personally attacked. Their claws were long and sharp and very clearly capable of slicing me into tiny bite-sized Riley nuggets.

Who the hell said I was familiar with one of these things?

Who?

Because I would like to sue the person.

"Oh no," I whispered to myself, my voice shaking. "Oh no no no no. I have been deceived. This is betrayal on a spiritual level. I do not recognize any of you. I have never seen any of you. I do not even know your names. I am innocent."

One of them stepped forward.

The ground shook.

Actually shook.

My teeth clattered together.

"Excuse me," I said weakly. "Can we not shake the ground? I am already emotionally unstable."

They did not answer. They just stared at me like I was the most interesting snack they had seen in centuries.

"This is not how I wanted to go," I continued, backing away slowly. "I wanted to die peacefully in my bed, not as a chew toy."

One of them let out a low growl and my survival instincts kicked in.

And instantly, I took the opportunity, I turned and ran.

"NOPE!" I screamed. "ABSOLUTELY NOT!"

I ran deeper into the cave without thinking because thinking clearly had left my body about three disasters ago. My feet hit the rocky ground hard and I almost tripped twice but somehow stayed upright.

Behind me I heard it.

Heavy footsteps.

Massive, earth-shaking, doom-sounding footsteps.

The entire cave trembled like it was afraid too.

"WHY ARE YOU SO BIG and existing on earth?!" I yelled while running. "WHO GAVE YOU PERMISSION TO BE THIS LARGE?! YOU SHOULD BE BANNED!"

One of them roared.

I screamed louder.

"I AM NOT FOOD! YOU WILL REGRET THIS!"

I ran past broken rocks and cracked walls and bloodstains and I did not even want to know whose blood that was because if I thought about it too much I would faint and that would not help anybody.

The cave split into two paths ahead.

"Oh my God," I gasped. "Left or right? Why is life always multiple choice when I do not study?"

I picked the right path and sprinted into it.

Two seconds later, I slid to a stop so hard my shoes scraped loudly against stone.

Because one of them was already there.

Standing at the end of the path.

Blocking it.

Its eyes glowed brighter in the darkness and it lowered its head slightly as if saying, "Really?"

I squeaked and spun around.

"Okay! Wrong choice! That was a mistake! Everyone makes mistakes!"

I ran back and took the left path. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Three steps in and I froze again.

Another one was there.

Just standing calmly like it had been waiting for me to make that exact decision.

"You are cheating!" I shouted. "This is cheating! You cannot teleport! That is unfair!"

It growled softly.

I turned around again, heart pounding so fast it felt like it was trying to escape my body, turning to run back. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm

But the third one was now standing behind me.

Slowly stepping closer.

I looked left.

Blocked.

I looked right.

Blocked.

I looked behind.

Blocked.

I looked up.

Still blocked because I could not fly.

"This is ridiculous," I whispered, breathing heavily. "This is absolutely ridiculous."

They began closing in.

Slowly.

Like they knew I had nowhere to go.

My legs gave up on me and I stumbled back until my back hit the cave wall.

Cold stone pressed against me.

Nowhere else to run.

"This is it," I said to myself. "Riley Grayson, it has been a chaotic life. You were dramatic. You were loud. You did not finish many things. But you tried atleast."

One of them stepped closer.

I could feel its breath.

It was warm and heavy and smelled like wild things and violence and I did not like it at all.

I squeezed my eyes shut tightly.

"Okay!" I shouted quickly. "If you are going to eat me, at least do it fast! Do not chew slowly! I do not want to feel anything!"

I waited.

One second.

Two seconds.

Three seconds.

Nothing happened.

No claws.

No teeth.

No pain.

I slowly opened one eye. Then the other.

They were still there. But they were not attacking.

They were just staring at me.

"Why are you staring?" I demanded nervously. "This is more stressful than biting me!"

Suddenly one of them stepped forward and before I could react, something large and furry wrapped around my waist.

And then—

I was in the air.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" I screamed so loud my voice cracked. "PUT ME DOWN! PUT ME DOWN RIGHT NOW! I DO NOT CONSENT TO BEING CARRIED BY YOU!"

The beast had lifted me like I weighed nothing.

Like I was a bag of rice.

Or worse.

Like I was a kitten.

"I AM NOT A TOY!" I yelled, kicking my legs wildly even though they were far from the ground. "THIS IS ILLEGAL! Holy Jesus Riley, you’re being carried by a fucking beast"

The other two began moving and the one holding me turned and started walking deeper into the cave.

"WHERE ARE WE GOING?!" I shrieked.

Its grip tightened slightly but not painfully. Just firm enough to keep me from falling.

I slapped its fur weakly.

"EXCUSE ME! I WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK TO YOUR LEADER!"

It did not respond.

It just kept walking.

The cave seemed to stretch endlessly ahead and every step it took made my whole body bounce slightly in its hold.

My lungs were burning from screaming but I could not stop.

"THIS IS THE WORST UBER RIDE I HAVE EVER BEEN ON!"

The other two walked beside us like bodyguards.

I glanced at them nervously.

"Are you guys enjoying this? Is this entertainment for you?"

One of them glanced at me briefly.

I gasped.

"Oh my God, you understood that. I am talking to intelligent monsters. That is even worse."

The one carrying me suddenly jumped over a large crack in the cave floor and I screamed again.

"WARNING BEFORE JUMPING! I NEED WARNING!"

We kept moving deeper and deeper and I had no idea where this thing was taking me and that scared me more than anything else.

"Listen," I said breathlessly, trying to reason with it. "If this is about the lunar fur, I can wait. I am patient. We can schedule an appointment. We do not need to rush."

No answer.

It just kept going.

My heart was beating so fast I felt dizzy.

"Okay," I muttered to myself, trying to calm down. "Maybe they are not going to eat you. Maybe they are taking you somewhere important. Maybe this is destiny. Maybe this is how queens are escorted."

Then I looked at its claws holding me.

"No. This is definitely kidnapping."

I took a deep breath and then screamed again at full volume.

"IF YOU ARE TAKING ME TO DIE, AT LEAST DO KT QUICK ALREADY, STOP GIVING ME FUCKING HOPE!"
