Chapter 97: Warning (3)
Dorothy sat to the side watching as Chester tended to Beth. The doctor she didn’t know tending to Beth was something that she didn’t like since there was a family doctor Beth could use. Why turn to a stranger when the family had a better doctor who has taken care of them for years?
Since when did this woman care to use a doctor that no one knew about? Dorothy saw Beth as someone who would love fine things. That Beth would want the best doctor in town to be looking after now.
Beth was carrying a Humphrey so she could have the best doctor by her side if she would turn this man away.
"How is she?" Dorothy questioned.
"She is doing well, Mrs. Humphrey. She has gained a little more weight since I last saw her. It is a good sign," Chester answered.
Dorothy couldn’t see what weight Chester spoke of as Beth was too thin in her eyes. She was here to make Beth eat to get her weight up. She had only been patient with it before since it seemed that Beth was early in her pregnancy, but now she had to be more involved. freeweɓnovel.cøm
"When should we expect to welcome the child?" Dorothy asked as she wished to get a better timeline of Jack’s relationship with Beth.
"It is hard to tell at the moment. I will have a correct answer for you the next time that I am here," Chester lied, his body feeling with guilt once more. He was only to lie to Jack but now his mother was present.
Beth wasn’t showing any signs of actually becoming pregnant and it was only for so long that they could keep up this act. His life was on the line here and he was starting to get the feeling that Beth had forgotten that she was not pregnant.
"We’ll decide if we want to call upon you again," Dorothy announced. They no longer had any use for him and she would make sure he never returned.
"What do you mean?" Beth questioned, not liking the sound of this. "Chester will be looking after me."
"We have a family doctor who is better suited to look at you. This one here was fine when you were nobody. I will get the doctor to come when he has time," Dorothy said then ended the conversation there. Beth was to follow what she said without any complaints.
"Jack and I have already decided that Chester will be looking after me. He saved my life and I have always wanted him to be the doctor who helped me during this time. If I am ill, I can be looked at by your doctor," Beth decided.
She could not be seen by another doctor before the wedding or this would all come crashing down on her. Beth expected good news soon as she had kept up with being intimate with Jack so her lie would become the truth. Dorothy just needed to be patient.
’Why can’t she just stay away and not interfere?’ Beth wondered.
Dorothy was never interested in her so why did she have to get involved to ruin everything now?
"Leave us," Dorothy instructed Chester. She didn’t trust that he wouldn’t speak about what he heard today which was why she didn’t want a stranger around Beth. free𝑤ebnovel.com
How hard was it for Beth to understand that she must use those loyal to the Humphreys to avoid news getting out?
Chester hurried to pack his things so he wouldn’t be brought into the conversation. He was already too deep into this mess.
Dorothy waited for Chester to be out of sight and then said, "You will be a Humphrey. You must use our people. What do you have to hide that you cannot use our doctor? You can have both if you wish but you cannot go on using that man alone. We don’t know him."
"I know him," Beth argued. "Jack has already agreed with it."
"And when I tell him to get rid of that man, he shall listen. You’ve caused enough problems for this family so just sit quietly and do as you are told. Where are the maids for me to have something to quench my thirst?" Dorothy asked, looking around for one.
"You treat me as though I was the only one involved in the affair. I didn’t force Jack to be with me so why should I get all the blame?" Beth asked. She was tired of his treatment when Jack should get some of the blame.
Dorothy wasn’t in the mood for the hostility in Beth’s voice. Beth should be glad that she had at least acknowledged the baby. "I know that the two of you played a part in the affair. I have scolded my son. I slapped him the last time I was here for a reason."
"And now you have moved on for him but you continue to treat me like an outsider. I will be marrying him. How we started wasn’t right but we now have a family," said Beth.
"Jack is quite like his father. Easily distracted by women like you. As a wife and someone who loved Scarlet, what makes you think I would warm up to you so easily?" Dorothy questioned.
Dorothy wouldn’t forget Jack’s actions and she certainly would not forget Beth’s. Jack was still trying to get back on her good side since the divorce. Beth, on the other hand, seemed to expect that her actions would be forgotten since she was pregnant.
Dorothy wasn’t fond of the way Beth had constantly approached Scarlet and then revealed her child before Scarlet when it had been a touchy subject. It was like Beth couldn’t help the need to show herself and Dorothy imagined herself in Scarlet’s shoes.
"So, it has a lot to do with Scarlet," Beth muttered. No matter what she did, Scarlet would keep coming up.
"It has to do more with you than you think. You cannot expect a warm welcome with how you have found your way here. It shall never happen so start trying to prove yourself," Dorothy advised Beth.
The child wasn’t enough to have the relatives caring for Beth.
Beth didn’t believe Dorothy as it felt like they would continue to hate her. She was certain now that they didn’t have Scarlet doing trivial tasks like they made her do while believing she was pregnant. This was no test to see if she liked Dorothy. All the tasks given to her were for her to know her place.
"Their marriage was practically over when I came-"
"Nothing you say can change the fact that you started as a mistress. I don’t wish it on anyone but perhaps you would understand if you were in Scarlet’s position. Never expect me to favour you over her. Because of the actions of you and Jack, I feel like I owe Scarlet a thousand apologies," Dorothy said.
She regretted not being a little more involved to stop Jack from becoming like his father but Dorothy didn’t want to be a mother-in-law who meddled. Because of that, she no longer had a relationship with the Collins.
Dorothy would never forget how this new marriage came about.
