Chapter 98: Warning (4)
Beth couldn’t believe Dorothy was going to hold onto the affair which had nothing to do with her. So what if she liked Scarlet? There was nothing to apologise for.
Scarlet didn’t love Jack and there was another woman to come in to love him. Shouldn’t she be receiving thanks for saving Jack from a loveless marriage?
Beth tried not to laugh as this was ridiculous. ’She didn’t love Scarlet. She loved the money,’ she thought.
Jack’s relatives were no better than her as they only loved Scarlet for her wealth. They had no room to speak about why Beth was with Jack. Everyone in this town cared about money just as she did. She was only insulted because she wasn’t born into wealth.
Beth stared at Dorothy who was busy looking around for a servant to serve her. When the family doctor came to see her, this would all be over. She needed her ring and her last name changed before this secret could be revealed.
’She hasn’t told Jack yet,’ Beth noted.
There was still an opening for her to save herself.
In the beginning, Beth had hoped that Dorothy would like her. That was before Dorothy stormed into this home to slap Jack. It would have been good to have a wealthy mother like Dorothy around. One who would spoil her just as Jack did. Beth’s mother didn’t have the money to spoil her as she wanted.
’I have to get rid of her,’ Beth decided.
Dorothy had lived a long good life so it was quite unfair for her to go around ruining the lives of those longer than her. With Dorothy out of the way, there would be some peace with the other relatives as they mourn and this might just be what she needed to bring Jack back to her.
No one could comfort Jack as she would over the loss of his mother.
"I will tell Jack that my doctor no longer needs to come here. Allow me to tell him," Beth pleaded.
Dorothy was surprised that Beth had given in so easily. The child seemed stubborn but she had more sense than it appeared at first. "Very well. I will give you by the next time you are to be seen by a doctor. I shall show up with the family doctor then. Do not disappoint me."
"I won’t," Beth smiled. She had plenty of time to find a way to get rid of Dorothy.
Beth would play nice with Dorothy as a send-off gift. It truly was unfortunate that she couldn’t have gotten Dorothy to like her.
"Should I find a maid to get you something to drink or pour it myself? What would you like?" Beth asked.
Dorothy didn’t like how well-behaved Beth was suddenly being. "Call upon a maid to come serve us. Beth, whatever you are planning won’t end well for you. If you don’t let us bring the family doctor here, many will question why and you won’t like their assumptions. I’m an old girl," she said, grimacing because of the word old.
"I’ve been around long enough to know a few things,’ Dorothy added.
Beth forced a smile. "I have nothing planned. My only concern was how do I tell Chester that I no longer needed him to come here after I made him feel good that I kept my old promise."
"Give him money," Dorothy answered.
Beth of all people knew that money was the answer to her problem. The doctor had served her enough so her promise was still kept.
"Then I have nothing to worry about now. Jack and I have been invited to a party by the Kingsleys. Will you be attending with us?" Beth asked, attempting to shift the conversation elsewhere to not be suspected.
"I have no interest in going to one of Layla’s parties. All she does is speak highly of her son while dragging down other’s sons. No one wants to be insulted just so she can make her son look better. Do you think it is a good idea for you and Jack to attend that party?" Dorothy asked.
Beth didn’t see why she wouldn’t attend the party. It was being held by the Kingsleys. Layla could boast about her son all she wanted, Beth just cared to be seen at the party. "I don’t see why we cannot attend."
"If I, at my age who doesn’t care to listen to certain gossip, know that Scarlet is currently with one of the Kingsley sons then you should know. Don’t you think that it is time that you stop showing up before her?" Dorothy asked, hoping that wasn’t Beth’s intention. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
It was time that Beth stopped trying to get near Scarlet. It was childish and pointless. It brought unwanted attention to both families.
Beth laughed as Dorothy had thought wrong. "I didn’t think of Scarlet when we received the invitation. Neither did Jack. We’ve crossed paths with Scarlet like at the viscount’s party and spoke. You have nothing to worry about."
"I am not the one who needs to be worried. For all the stunts that you have pulled, you should be lucky that you haven’t ended up missing. That Collins family, I wouldn’t try poking at them for too long," Dorothy said as anyone of her age or older knew the stories. "By blood, she’s a Collins and a Callahan. You don’t want either side to be after you."
Beth wasn’t the slightest bit scared of what Scarlet’s last name was. She had always found it fitting that Scarlet’s grandmother came from a family heavily involved with people once said to be barbarians. It made perfect sense as to why Scarlet acts the way she does.
"And she has ties to the royal family," Dorothy added. Scarlet had the perfect family ties to be untouchable in the town.
The town loved the chance to be able to talk about someone who was normally private and the reason it could talk so much was because of Beth. Had Scarlet been a man the town would have been far less willing to speak about her relationship and paint her to be a villain.
Scarlet was yet to show the town that she was just as dangerous as the men in her family so many believed that because she was a woman, she was not to be feared.
Dorothy couldn’t help but like Scarlet for being in a world men liked to believe they controlled and sticking out in running her family businesses. Meanwhile, Dorothy now had to look at Beth who only knew how to spend money.
"Forget about the drink. I am going home," Dorothy decided. It was hard to stay around Beth for a long time.
Beth stood up at the same time as Dorothy and said, "I will walk you out."
It was about time the old bat left. Beth could have been on her way to do more shopping if Dorothy had left earlier.
"Jack and I will soon pick out the baby’s room in the new mansion so I hope you can come visit to see that," said Beth.
"Visit just to see a room? You must find something else to waste your time," Dorothy said, declining the offer. "No need to walk me any further."
"Then goodbye," Beth stopped, waving goodbye to Dorothy. "It was lovely to have you here today."
’For the last time,’ Beth added in her head.
