Chapter 189: Family feud (2)

Dorothy had enough of Jack and his ways. Putting up with her husband was already one hard task and then she had been keeping Beth captive. "I didn’t fail you. I did everything I could to set you up to be successful and to be better than your father. You failed yourself."

"I stayed with your father because I already had you and knew what the future awaited you as his heir. I was not going to leave and have him get someone else pregnant to let them convince him to make someone else his heir. I did not help make something of this family for another woman to reap the benefits."

"You didn’t need to stay because of me. That’s an excuse that you use," Jack replied.

Jack knew he would have been well without his mother living here. His father loved him so regardless of who else walked through the front doors, he would always inherit everything.

"I sent you to the best schools, found you the best tutors, set you up to make friends with those who would help you one day, and I was there when a parent needed to be present while your father was off living like he did not have a wife or son at home. I had to be there you idiot," Dorothy said, throwing one of the cushions Jack’s way.

Those moments were far in the past but Jack should never forget how she set him up for success. At least she tried to and he blew it. Dorothy had many times found herself acting as Jack’s mother and father. It wasn’t fair for him to calmly dismiss what she endured to stay here. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

"You watched your father disrespect me and then turned around and treated your wife the same way. I hate to think that I helped make you believe you could do as you like and Scarlet would be waiting for you. I am glad she decided to move on so let go of her," Dorothy advised Jack.

"I cannot," Jack replied, needing his mother to understand. "I made a mistake and now I am trying to fix it. You only need to help me just once and I won’t make that mistake again. Help me before she makes a terrible decision to get with that bastard."

Dorothy didn’t believe that Jack was going to change. At some point, he was going to fall back into his ways. He was trying to convince the wrong person that he was going to change.

"There’s supposed to be a deal you were to handle. I’ve told you to pay special attention to this job because it is big. Have you closed it?" Dorothy questioned. freewebnσvel.cøm

Jack didn’t know what she spoke of at first, but then it clicked that they were to get involved in building something for the palace. He hadn’t finished making the deal right now since he was busy. "I will finish it up by tomorrow."

"There are a lot of families fighting for that job. You were at the top of the list because of Scarlet but now, the Castros don’t have any reason to consider you first. You’re not focused on our business and unfortunately for you, that comes first," said Dorothy.

She stayed in this family to grow the business. Dorothy would not have it fall flat because Jack was too caught up in worrying about women.

"You are going to step down and I will find someone else to take your place," Dorothy decided, stepping in before their business crumbled. "I had high hopes for you."

"You cannot take it back. I already inherited all of it. I am the one who controls the business!" Jack yelled, standing up to tower over his mother. It was too late for her to want to take everything back after handing it over to him.

Dorothy wasn’t afraid to see Jack stand above her with so much anger showing on his face. As heated as he was, he knew who was in control here. "Did you think I stayed with your father and not made plans for myself? It took a while but I managed to turn things in my favour. Your father doesn’t control the business and neither do you."

Dorothy had noticed Jack’s similarity to her husband a while back. She didn’t think Jack was ever going to cheat since he saw what it did to their household, but she never completely trusted him with their business.

His marriage to Scarlet had given her hope that he would pay more attention to growing the business but he cared more about whining when others compared him to Scarlet. Dorothy gave Jack the power he needed to be able to prove himself worthy while keeping herself the one in charge in secret.

"Those who work for you are all under my command. Stop having them look into Beth, Scarlet, and the Kingsley boy. They look tired when they have to report about you. Take some time away to clear your head and then I will think about putting you back. Now, get out," Dorothy said, refusing to speak with Jack and then having to listen to Beth later.

"You’re turning your back on me now? I am not giving up my seat, mother. I shall have father-"

"Your father is a bit occupied with the woman I sent his way. He won’t have time to listen to you cry about your lost spot. Go home and start clearing your mind before I send you somewhere a doctor will clear your mind for you. Leave Scarlet alone," Dorothy said for what would be the last time.

"I cannot. I need to have her again. I can admit that I did not appreciate what I had then. I can’t leave her to be with that Kingsley bastard. I will get her back without your help," Jack decided since he didn’t have a choice.

"Jack, you should be grateful that she has not harmed you after you have continued to trouble her. If you chase after her, Scarlet or one of her relatives will come after you. I don’t have the power to go up against a Collins, Callahan, or the Castros to be able to save you. If you value your life, please stop," Dorothy pleaded.

Just knowing who would be after him if he troubled Scarlet should be enough for Jack to move on. Death awaited anyone who poked at the Collins and they had a talent for avoiding being taken in by the town guards for murder.

Jack was confident he could get her back without them having a bloody fight. "Your beloved daughter-in-law will be back soon."
