Chapter 190: Family feud (3)

"Jack, though I am disappointed with you, I do not want to see you die. If you walk out those doors and continue to trouble someone who has moved on, you will not walk back in this house again and I will be the one who has to bury you. Please save me from having to bury my child," said Dorothy.

Dorothy preferred that she would die before she had to bury her one child. There was still a chance for Jack to turn his life around and do better. He only needed to take his focus from Scarlet and not entertain any more women.

Jack could be a good businessman if he paid attention to the family business. Then later on in life, he might find the right woman for him.

"Mother, you are in a different position than I am. I do not want to lose her. All I think about is how I ruined what we had and now she is in the arms of another man. Scarlet and I understood each other because we were to inherit our family’s business. I want her," Jack declared.

It took them being away from each other for him to see how wonderful Scarlet was. Perhaps all he needed to do was take a break from living with Scarlet on her estate and live in another house until they were better. Still, it might not have fixed the issue of her not wanting to let him touch her.

Dorothy sighed since there wasn’t anything she could do. Jack would always be stubborn. Even if she were to take him and place him somewhere for him to be out of reach of Scarlet, his mind would always be stuck on Scarlet.

She couldn’t keep having him confined each time he became obsessed with Scarlet. Dorothy had no choice but to let Jack suffer the consequences of his actions. She had shielded him long enough and there was nothing more she could tell him.

"Fine. If you want to have your mother be the one to lay you to rest, then go ahead. Your actions as of late have caused me trouble so why should you stop to care about me now? After everything that I have done for you, this is the thanks that I get. Perhaps I should have left you with your father," said Dorothy.

"You would have woken up and seen that what you have now wouldn’t be so easily handed to you. I thought I was doing what was best for my son but I shouldn’t have made it so easy. Before you go, you must know one thing about what your actions have caused," Dorothy said, standing up so she could see him out.

"I shared my thoughts on Beth and you did not want to listen to me-"

"Mother, I don’t want to hear about Beth now. Yes, I made a mistake by picking someone who was after my money. I didn’t know it then but I do now," said Jack. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

Dorothy wasn’t buying it. "Everyone around you could see what she wanted you for. You were so wrapped up in hurting Scarlet that you could not see it for a moment but you knew. Why do you think your money went down so fast or why she would have liked to rush for you to marry? Had you said I do, she would have cemented herself with great wealth."

Dorothy knew Jack had a lot of moments of being a fool but surely there must be one when he had sense.

"At some point, you might have thought about sending her away, but then the foolish girl lied to you about being pregnant to stay by your side. While I am not pleased with her lie, had she been truly pregnant with your child, you would have sent you off to fend for herself?" Dorothy questioned, refusing to let this go.

There was a chance that Beth could have been pregnant and now that Jack wanted Scarlet back, he was willing to toss out Beth and a baby that could have been there. What kind of a man had she helped to raise? How could he not have been better or how did she miss it all going wrong?

Jack didn’t care about the latter of his mother’s words. He was more stuck on the fact that Beth had lied to him. There was supposed to be a child. He was to have a child to offer Scarlet when he returned to her.

More importantly, he had been excited for a baby and spent time preparing for it. Beth made a complete fool out of him. He had been boasting about becoming a father since she revealed it. How could he have been so blind to how trifling she was?

"Where is she now?" Jack questioned, his hands shaking as he thought of strangling her. Who was Beth to think she could lie to him? "Where is she?" He yelled.

"If you were not focused on Scarlet, you would know where Beth is. That woman tried to have me killed but you are so hellbent on getting back a woman who doesn’t want you. Your attention should be on Beth before she ruins our name. Find her," Dorothy said, giving him something else to chase.

Jack needed to be distracted for a while.

"I am going to kill her," Jack muttered, walking away as he could not waste any time searching for Beth. He would have Beth wishing that she never got mixed up with him.

Dorothy stood alone listening to the door closed as Jack left. He was going to get himself killed one day, but at least she managed to prolong it. If he was smart, he was going to end up back here looking for Beth.

"Can someone bring me some wine?" Dorothy asked.

...

Away from Dorothy’s mansion, Victor sat in a carriage confused by Ian taking him home.

"I thought you would have sent me off alone after we reached Scarlet’s home. Are you taking me to kill me?" Victor asked, suddenly fearing for his life.

"If I wanted to kill you, I would have done it last night. I am coming to visit your father. Would you prefer that I get out here and let you go alone-"

"No! No," Victor cleared his throat. "You should come so you can go to the cottage. I didn’t mean for you to live in it again. I meant for you to see what of your things is left in there. It is burnt because it was on fire years ago but it should be fine. I was there once and it didn’t look so bad."

"You are a walking panic attack. I don’t plan to step foot in that cottage. I am certain your mother would love to see me going in there again. Now, let’s talk about presents. I should have brought your mother a gift, shouldn’t I?" Ian asked.

Victor smiled but it was due to being wary. The best present Ian could give his mother was to never show up in front of her again. She might faint just from the sight of him. "The only thing I can think of is you turning around but I don’t want that. My mother would never accept a gift from your hands so don’t try."

"That’s why I want to give her one. To drive her mad. I might just stay the night there if this goes well," Ian said, looking out the carriage window at his old home coming into view. It was just as he remembered.

"You are doing this to find out about Noelle," Victor realised. He had forgotten about that while being excited to have Ian join him.

This wasn’t a happy family reunion. It was a murder being plotted. freewёbnoνel.com

"You now realise that? Honestly, I think you were lying about being smart. During the time that I am here, stay out of my way a little so you don’t get caught up in the crossfire. Will you question your mother about making you sick?" Ian wondered as it deserved to be addressed immediately.

Now that Victor knew the reason why he was so sick, he might be able to find a way to get himself healed if it was not too late.

"I have to, but I will not do it right as you return for her to claim it to be your lies. She would eventually do it but I do not want to spoil whatever you have planned right away. Or maybe, I am trying to run from facing the truth that my mother made me sick by trying to kill you," Victor said, not knowing which one stopped him.

"It can be both. Who would want to confront their mother about being so cruel to poison someone close to you? It is quite amazing that after being raised by those two, you ended up somewhat normal. Well done," Ian clapped for Victor.

Victor couldn’t accept the compliment. "Somewhat? What do you mean by somewhat? I am normal."
