Chapter 188: Family feud (1)
"Can someone get that one upstairs to keep quiet? She’s starting to give me a headache," Dorothy said, touching her temple to calm the ache.
Life with Beth was a headache every day. She placed Beth in the room furthest from where she walked every day, but there were a few moments when she heard the slightest squeak out of Beth and it annoyed her.
Dorothy had been requested to visit Beth to hear about how Beth would forget about Jack and leave town or how she would reveal that she had lied about being pregnant and deal with the consequences.
Dorothy didn’t care about any of the promises Beth was making. Unlike Jack, she knew not to trust Beth. As soon as she was released, Dorothy knew Beth would come up with some story to make herself the victim even though she had lied about being pregnant and wanted to kill the woman who was to become her mother-in-law.
"I’ll have to deal with her myself," said Dorothy.
"Milady, your son is here to see you."
"Perfect timing. Send him in and bring some water. I have a feeling that he might need to cool off from whatever has brought him here," Dorothy instructed the maid.
Jack hadn’t been coming to visit her so there had to be some kind of trouble. Either he was here to ask if she saw Beth or he came with news about Scarlet.
"Mother," Jack said as he entered her room. He looked around for signs of Beth.
"You look horrible, Jack. Beneath your eyes are dark," Dorothy noted. It was like he hadn’t slept all night.
"Did Beth come to you?" Jack questioned, still trying to find her here.
"Oh, so that is who you are looking for," Dorothy said, pleased to know he wasn’t here because of Scarlet. It was about time for his attention to be elsewhere.
"I sent her out of my home. I am growing tired of her questions and how much money she spent. I have never lost so much money in the short time of knowing someone," Jack said, sulking over the money that was out of his hands.
He could work to get it back but it had greatly impacted his savings. Now that he looked into it, Beth had been spending money like he had an unlimited amount of it.
Dorothy could only smile as she knew this was coming. Beth wasn’t part of their world so when placed in a situation where there was suddenly a lot of money before her, she got a little too excited and wanted to spend it all at once.
"Did you not pay attention to anything in your youth? What happened to your father?" Dorothy questioned. She hated to bring up this to her son but she had always assumed Jack would have learned from his father’s mistakes. freewebnøvel.com
"I am not like father," Jack replied. He didn’t see his father having a problem anyway.
It hurt Dorothy that Jack couldn’t see how much he was like his father.
"I know that you once visited Scarlet. Why?" Jack asked as there wasn’t any reason for the two to meet. Unless there was a time when Scarlet was thinking about starting over with him and came to his mother for advice.
Dorothy smiled. "Where do you get off thinking that I need to share my business with you? I told you to stop thinking about Scarlet. You have both moved on. You moved on during your marriage."
"I want to get her back-"
"Don’t," Dorothy stopped Jack in his tracks. "Do not bother her after all that you have done. You should have realised long ago that she’s the woman you want. Don’t bother me, Jack. I am dealing with enough already."
Jack was not ready to give up. His mother and Scarlet had always been close so if his mother were to speak to Scarlet about giving him another chance, Scarlet would listen. "You said you liked her as your daughter-in-law. Help me to get her back and I will get rid of Beth."
Dorothy sighed, knowing she had been foolish to think Jack had given up on Scarlet. "I already told her to never take you back if you come crawling on your knees apologising."
"Mother!" Jack yelled, feeling betrayed.
"Do not raise your voice at me in my home. Have you lost more of your mind?" Dorothy questioned, her voice loud to get the attention of the servants. She was not going to be disrespected in her home by anyone. "Why would I tell her to get back with a cheating bastard?"
"You did it with my father. You could ask her to do the same. I will treat her well this time," Jack promised.
Dorothy looked around for something to throw Jack’s way but there were only cushions. How could he sit there and ask her to help Scarlet make the same foolish decision that she did? "You low-down bastard. After what you witnessed me go through with your father, you think it is fine for me to tell another woman to do it?"
Dorothy would never tell anyone to stay because she did. She wasn’t happy staying with her husband and would not put on a smile to tell anyone else that this was fine to settle for.
It was insulting to have her son who witnessed how her husband’s cheating ways affected her in the past sit here and kindly ask her to have Scarlet get back with him.
As much as Dorothy wanted to get up to hit Jack, she held back. She had already slapped him once and didn’t want to get too comfortable doing it again even though Jack would deserve every hit.
Dorothy noticed that the butler was near since it had already been concerning that she had a headache because of Beth and now she was acting this way because of Jack. "Jack, you know well what your father did. Do you not feel any shame with what you come here to ask me?" frёewebηovel.cѳm
Jack looked away from his mother. He didn’t come here to speak about his father. He was here to have his problem solved before Scarlet got too close to the bastard. "Mother, we both know that you stayed because it was better that way. You two were suited for each other. Unlike my father, I am trying to fix my mistakes early."
"You think your father didn’t give me a lot of promises when I first caught him? Once you get comfortable with your wife back at your side, you’ll cheat again and try to be better at it. I love you Jack, but I am tired of you," said Dorothy.
