Chapter 142: Failed plans (1)

"How do you know what she is up to?" Scarlet questioned, suspicious of Ian.

Beth was an annoying little fool, but Scarlet didn’t think she was so stupid to speak of her plans to Ian or anywhere near him.

Scarlet also didn’t like thinking that Ian placed someone around Beth to gather information about her. She didn’t need him to be caught up in her past. She liked that he had nothing to do with Jack. No friendship and no relation as business partners. frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓

"I can see that you are overthinking. I learned of this from a business of mine. One that I can’t just be flaunting around the town. I’ve made mention of this to you so it wasn’t a secret. I’ve not been anywhere near that woman. She came to my business," Ian clarified.

It was easy to place that Scarlet started to think he might have some sort of relationship with Beth. There weren’t two fools in her life. He would not make the ridiculous mistake of leaving Scarlet for Beth.

"Oh. This business is to accept money to kill someone?" Scarlet asked, relieved that it was nothing like what she thought.

"No. It’s more of a business for completing any kind of request. I like to think that these people sometimes owe me favours instead of money. It’s a good way to receive invitations to parties. It isn’t known that I am the owner of that establishment, so I ask that you keep this a secret," Ian said, placing his finger on his lips.

Scarlet needed a moment to think. Not about Ian’s business but about Dorothy and Beth. She knew Dorothy well after meeting with her a lot in the past. She imagined that Beth wasn’t getting the warmest welcome but Dorothy would still accept the child.

"I like Dorothy. She was always kind to me and offered business advice when needed. I respect that like me, she led businesses. I don’t want her to die. Take her son instead," Scarlet replied, serious.

Ian chuckled as for a moment, he thought Scarlet wouldn’t want anyone to die. "I have not given the order for her death yet. There is a handsome price on her head so you must have something to make me turn down the offer. This is business after all."

Scarlet knew not to expect Ian to lose his business just for her. There had to be a lot of money on the line to kill a woman like Dorothy Humphrey. She would have to pay more than what was offered.

"Ow," Scarlet whined, looking up at Ian. "Did you just flick me?"

"I did because you think too much. How did you miss that all I want is a kiss? Were you thinking of offering me money?" Ian asked.

What would he look like accepting money from his woman?

"Because it is business. You have no relation to Dorothy so why would you care if she is dead or alive? I thought it made the most sense to beat the offer to kill her. Don’t laugh at me and the next time you flick me, you shall lose your fingers," Scarlet warned.

He flicked her as if he didn’t like her.

"I must speak to Dorothy," Scarlet said, picking up the phone.

"Hold on," Ian said, taking it from her hand. "The job has already been accepted so she won’t go to anyone else. She won’t want to let too many people know she’s trying to kill Dorothy. Well, Beth might not know we know it’s her since she sent some scared little man."

"We always look into our clients and who they want dead. Turns out this little man suddenly moved from being a doctor in a small office to living quite comfortably in a larger space now that Beth is his client. Tell me, why would she be getting her doctor to go around trying to kill her mother-in-law?" Ian asked.

Ian found it quite foolish when he learned of who Chester was involved with, that Beth would get her doctor to kill Dorothy. It was quite obvious she was behind the order because what problem could Chester have with Dorothy?

"Do you think they are working together to hide something about her pregnancy? It would be foolish of her to lie about that. Jack wants a child and Dorothy would only accept her as the mother of her grandchild. Why must I know of their troubles?" Scarlet questioned, annoyed that her evening was ruined.

She liked not having to hear about these people.

"Well, I see it as a good opportunity to flip the ridicule to them. Wasn’t she the one crying a lot, speaking of how you couldn’t give Jack what he needed? Wouldn’t it be something if there was no child? I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t miss the chance to ruin them," said Ian.

Ian wanted to see the two eat their words after trying to place all fault on Scarlet for the marriage ending.

"I don’t want to ruin any of them. I like not being bothered by them or having to hear about their lives. I don’t need any revenge, Ian. I don’t hold any hate for them. I only want Dorothy to live so I must tell her. Can I?" Scarlet asked since it would go against what his business was.

"As long as you do not reveal where you got the tip from. I would like to keep my role in this business quiet. Dorothy isn’t going to die tonight so save that talk for tomorrow. Right now, you’re supposed to be giving me all the attention," Ian said, continuing to dry her hair.

"Can I use your business?" Scarlet asked, suddenly having a job she needed completed.

"Certainly," Ian replied. She would be a priority client.

"I’ll pay you more than any of your other clients have paid if you get the needed man who doesn’t want me to tell someone their life is in danger out of my estate right now," said Scarlet.

Ian laughed at the order. "See, I would be happy to do this for you, but my workers might not so we face a problem. Wouldn’t it be better to sit with her? I wouldn’t want you to tell me that someone wants me dead over the phone."

Scarlet walked around Ian to go to the door. "You are only saying that because you don’t want me to take my attention from you. I will sit with her tomorrow. Eat the food served to you and be on your way."

"You will not invite me to lay with you? The offer to test my mouth still stands," Ian said, stopping when Scarlet turned to him. "Now?"

He could make it quick before dinner started but he could lose track of time.

"Of course not you horny bastard," Scarlet refused the offer. She needed one of the pillows on her bed to throw at him. "I cannot wait for dinner to be over with. Make haste to prepare the tea and stop annoying me."

"I told you that I wasn’t going to make tea," Ian answered, walking toward Scarlet. "You left me alone to take care of something you started. How about you say pretty please for the tea?"

"How about I throw you out?" Scarlet retorted.

"Tea it is," Ian agreed, reaching for Scarlet’s hand so they could walk together.

Scarlet allowed it since it didn’t bother her as long as he stopped speaking about his mouth.
