Chapter 143: Failed plans (2)
The next day, Scarlet made the call to visit Dorothy but was advised that it would be best that Dorothy visit her. Dorothy wanted to avoid the noise of her son or Beth questioning her for why she was allowing Scarlet around her.
"Welcome," Scarlet greeted Dorothy with a hug. She would not understand how Jack turned out as he did when he had such a wonderful mother. Dorothy needed to hit him across the head a bit more. It had always been funny when Dorothy punished him.
"Don’t tell my son that you’re still my beloved daughter-in-law. Not the one he is trying to force me to accept. I thought you would have never let me step foot back in here," Dorothy said, enjoying the warm hug from Scarlet.
Dorothy had no ill feelings when it came to Scarlet. She was the one who needed to apologise to Scarlet for her stupid son. Dorothy was ecstatic when she received the call from Scarlet. She wanted to reach out to Scarlet but didn’t know how to start it.
"Your secret is safe with me. As long as it wouldn’t cause trouble for either of us, you are welcome here. I’ve always enjoyed your company. It wasn’t good going so long without going to you for advice. I don’t want there to be conflict," Scarlet said.
A new fight would start if it were known that she was meeting with Dorothy. Should it reach the nosy people in town, they would either say that she was trying to get back into Jack’s life or Dorothy was not accepting Beth.
Scarlet didn’t want to speak to Dorothy about Beth so she didn’t reach out to Dorothy once Beth was revealed to the town. She didn’t want to have that awkward conversation speaking of affairs. She was more interested in speaking about business.
"Who will argue with what I do with my time? Jack knows not to speak on what doesn’t concern him and you know that my husband has learned his lesson long ago. I don’t need to cut you out of my life when you did nothing wrong. I’ve only not called because I didn’t think you wanted to hear from one of us," Dorothy explained her silence. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
"It is fine. I know that you had to show support to your son. He wouldn’t be pleased knowing you spoke to me right away. I have treats prepared for us but what I called you here for isn’t to catch up. It is about Beth," Scarlet said, wanting to prepare Dorothy for what was to come.
"Have you found out that the girl isn’t pregnant? Don’t look so surprised," Dorothy smiled, enjoying Scarlet’s reaction. "You know I have always been concerned when it comes to my family’s health. That is why I went out of my way to find a good doctor we can all use."
"Why would that girl who likes shiny things not want to use the best doctor money has to offer? I’m angry that she managed to fool me at the start and Jack has failed to notice it by now. She doesn’t want to meet with the family doctor and I refuse to believe the story she mentions about her doctor," said Dorothy.
Dorothy didn’t like being taken for a fool. For someone like Beth to come in and think she could outsmart them.
"That is not all. I learned from someone who I cannot reveal that the doctor around Beth has hired someone to kill you. If she suspects that you might know she is not pregnant, then that is a good reason for her to try to get rid of you. That and bringing the family doctor," Scarlet said as the family doctor would reveal the truth.
Dorothy didn’t question how Scarlet came to know of this. Whoever told Scarlet must be someone loyal to the Collins. "I must take a seat."
Scarlet walked, linking her arm with Dorothy to the drawing room and sat down beside each other.
"I knew that girl was going to be trouble, but I wasn’t looking for her to want to kill me. My son isn’t thinking with his head right now. Sometimes, I sit and think of how I was wasting money on his schooling. I don’t know what’s become of him," Dorothy said, thinking of her son as a stranger.
Jack was a sweet boy in Dorothy’s eyes but then one day, he made a big switch and became more like his father.
"This is the last thing you must want to hear about. I apologise that you had to learn of this, but I also want to thank you for telling me. I wouldn’t be able to rest if I was killed by her. I should have sent her away the first time I learned about her. I’m sorry," Dorothy apologised.
"It wouldn’t have mattered. I wouldn’t have stayed with Jack if Beth was out of the picture. If not her, Jack would just go to someone else. Hopefully, he will pick better with the next woman. Please be safe, Dorothy," Scarlet said, worried about what more Beth would do to hide her secret.
Scarlet couldn’t be certain if Jack would listen to his mother believe her when she said that Beth wanted her dead. Would he want to believe there was no child?
Jack would want to save face after being fooled that his lover had a child. He might go against the story that Beth wasn’t pregnant so he would not be embarrassed.
"I will be safe. That girl will not be the one to take me from this world. It’s good that I know of this before the wedding. That stubborn boy will need to listen. If she wants me dead, she should do it with her bare hands. Scarlet," Dorothy said, taking hold of Scarlet’s hand. "I know my son well."
Dorothy had been hearing a few things from the man she employed to watch Jack and reported back to her. After the affair, she could not take her eyes off Jack. She would soon need to free Kevin from his duty since Jack was driving him crazy.
"You already had to put up with my son once. Though I liked it when you were my daughter-in-law, I don’t want you to put up with him again. For telling me this you must know that Jack has been interested in you these days. Interested in some man around you," Dorothy said, exchanging what she knew.
Dorothy knew there would be a day when Jack regretted his actions and wanted Scarlet. She always knew the day would come too late. Jack could never get Scarlet back and she did not want him to. Jack wasn’t deserving of Scarlet’s time.
As his mother, she had to be honest with herself. Dorothy could never bring it upon herself to plead with Scarlet to take Jack back. It would benefit her family business if she were to convince Scarlet, but Dorothy wanted Scarlet to stick to the decision she made.
"Once Beth is out of his life, I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes back to you. Trying to apologise his way back to your side. Do not take my son back. Do not be a fool like me. It is not worth it and you end up stuck with them," Dorothy spoke from experience.
Many didn’t dare to do what Scarlet did and stayed unhappy for too long.
"Trust me, there is nothing he can say to change my mind," Scarlet replied.
