Chapter 129: Fading love (1)
"I hope you have not come with bad news about my wife. About Scarlet," Jack corrected himself.
Kevin wished that by now Jack would know not to expect any good news from a woman he had divorced. "It seems that he might have met her family. Someone saw their carriage arrive while he was on the estate."
"Her father must have threatened him. I leave it to Leonard to be the voice of reason. Leonard only failed to kill Ian right there. She is moving too fast. It is not like her," Jack said, having more reason to think that there was something wrong with Scarlet.
Why was Ian around her family? Was it an accidental meeting or was Scarlet fooling herself with thinking she was in love with this man?
Jack started to question again if there was a chance that Scarlet had cheated during their marriage. It would make sense why she was quickly so comfortable with Ian.
"That isn’t like her either," Jack concluded.
He didn’t want to believe that Scarlet could have another man in her life during that time. She couldn’t have done that to him. Scarlet was too busy with her family businesses to have time to cheat. She was too busy to focus on their marriage that she only learned of Beth because of his need to hurt her.
"Is there more?" Jack asked.
"Yes. One of the men we had tailing her has gone missing. We’re looking into-"
"She killed him," Jack said, not putting it past Scarlet. "It would be a waste of my time to look for him. She knows that she’s being watched. Hopefully, she doesn’t know who. Unless it would make her feel something to know I am protecting her."
"She’s also with him right now. At his business. It will take some time to be told when she leaves or if she is leaving with him. I am waiting for them to reach a phone," said Kevin.
"What does she see in him? Tell me," Jack said, interested in Kevin’s opinion for once. "He does nothing but serves lowlifes."
"I’m sorry to correct you, but he has been getting many men of great status as customers. Some of your friends. Lord Kinglsey is speaking highly of him so many believe that he might be the new lord in the future. They are trying to get close to him now," Kevin revealed, positioning himself to duck as Jack grabbed the cup on his table.
"Those same fools were trying to get close to Victor and now they are abandoning him for Ian. He cannot become the new Lord," Jack said as many would start to think Ian was deserving of Scarlet. "Have you done what I told you and sent Layla Kingsley my support for Victor?"
"I have. We are waiting for a response. However, she will likely accept your offer. Support is split for Ian and Victor. She needs all who are willing to be on her son’s side. Perhaps inviting Victor to meet with you would work in your favour," Kevin suggested.
Jack failed to set up the meeting when he first suggested it.
Jack leaned back on his chair. "I’ve never cared much about speaking to him. He was just a good person to have around because of his background. He doesn’t speak about women nor speaks of any business plans his father has. I suppose all that matters is that he isn’t interested in Scarlet. What?"
Jack noticed the way Kevin reacted as if he had said something wrong. "What am I missing?"
"There are rumours that his mother would love for him to marry Scarlet. I just think they want him to compete with Ian for her. Victor has never shown any interest in-"
"This isn’t about what he is interested in. This is about money!" Jack yelled, throwing the cup in Kevin’s direction. "If he’s smart, his interest lies in what his father wants. If Hank wants Scarlet as his daughter-in-law, Victor will join the fight for her. Must it be both sons?"
Jack couldn’t believe that he had to watch out for Victor around Scarlet as well. There were too many ants waiting in secret for the sugar he left behind.
Many claimed it was that it was the right decision for him to leave Scarlet, but they turned around to backstab him by trying to court her. They didn’t think he knew but Jack always paid careful attention to who was watching her.
"I can only get him to stay away from her if I speak to him and maybe, he can tell me something about his brother. Where did that bastard suddenly come from? There must be something about him that I can use to wake Scarlet up. Where did he get money to start a business here?" Jack wondered.
Was Hank supporting Ian all along and playing pretend now, or was it usual for Ian to find his way to women like Scarlet and take their money?
"I need to speak to her," Jack decided.
It was pointless to go to a leech like Ian. He had to try once more to speak to Scarlet. freeweɓnøvel.com
In their world, they should watch out for leeches who were just after their wealth. Scarlet should have been able to quickly point out what Ian was, but she was too occupied in trying to act like she had moved on.
"She is with him now," Kevin reminded Jack.
The last time Jack visited Ian it didn’t go well as Jack threw a tantrum when he left in Kevin’s opinion. With Jack already angry, it wasn’t the best idea for him to go to Scarlet now.
’Why do you keep thinking this will bring her back?’ Kevin wondered.
Kevin failed to see why Jack was paying this much attention to Scarlet when he was not only engaged but expecting a child with another woman. From what Kevin knew of Scarlet, she was not going to take Jack back.
Kevin was merely a worker. A yes-man to Jack. If Jack believed that Scarlet would listen to him, then Kevin would fill Jack’s head with what he wanted to hear since Jack never listened.
"Oh! Are you going somewhere now?" Beth questioned after opening the door. She thought she came at a time when he wouldn’t be doing too much work. freēwēbηovel.c૦m
Jack wasn’t pleased to see Beth now. "I told you that you don’t need to come here. Were you shopping again?"
All she did was waste his money.
"Only for a moment. I bought something for you. A coat that was made just for you and I bought something for your mother. I want to visit her to keep trying to get close before the wedding. Am I bothering you?" Beth questioned, noting how annoyed Jack looked with her.
She knew that he didn’t like her making the trip here, but Beth was close by so she thought of visiting him. Jack had been acting strange these days and was a little too obsessed with watching Scarlet. Beth had to be near to make sure he wasn’t looking to go back to what he had in the past.
They were too close to be getting married for Jack to ruin it now.
Jack was annoyed with her presence since he could not go to Scarlet right away. Some time ago, he welcomed Beth coming to him, but now, he was slowly losing interest.
