Chapter 130: Fading love (2)

Beth was nothing when compared to Scarlet. Jack knew that much. Had Beth had money to her name, she might have been able to compete with Scarlet. If Scarlet had Beth’s personality to tend to him, Jack knew Scarlet would have been the perfect woman.

Each woman had something that the other lacked.

Other than his child, Beth had nothing more to offer Jack. He could get another Beth easily by going to where he found this one. It was becoming more obvious that he only liked the excitement of fooling around with Beth. There was nothing now that their relationship was out in the open.

"I don’t plan to keep you busy. I just wanted to see you for a moment. I shall leave," Beth said, turning around to make her exit.

"I will walk you out. I am on my way out," Jack said, holding Beth’s hand. For the time being, she was still the mother of his child and the only woman treating him well. He had to care for her so his child wouldn’t come into a broken home so early on.

Later on, should an opportunity present itself, Jack would get back with Scarlet. Beth would have no right to be upset as she had once hurt Scarlet as well.

"You must be careful with our child," said Jack.

Beth smiled, but inside she was annoyed that he was only concerned about her safety because of the baby. Scarlet’s question about Jack loving her or loving that he was going to be a father came to her now.

It pissed Beth off because it seemed like Scarlet was right. Beth was certain that Jack was in love with her before she mentioned anything about a baby, but now, Jack was only thinking about the child.

Had she not made this lie, Beth knew she would be out of Jack’s life already. Her position was not secured.

"I am careful. I don’t want anything to happen to our first child. I’ve bought a hat for you and a boy. Something is telling me that our first child will be a boy. Everything like his father," Beth said, using the child to get back in Jack’s good graces.

While Beth wanted Jack to love her, she would use what he loved most to keep him in the palm of her hands.

Jack smiled as his son should be everything like him. "Is that so? When I return home, you should show me the hat that you bought. My mother would be thrilled if you were to give her a grandson. It is what we need right now."

Beth didn’t like the mention of Dorothy. It was a reminder that the old bat wasn’t dead yet. Chester was taking too long with it and Beth had to visit him soon to check that he was not going to ruin her plan.

A stupid doctor who didn’t know to take advantage of what was before him would not mess with her plans.

"I would love to have a son as well. Promise me that you will not be upset if it is a girl. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were to have a girl and a boy?" Beth questioned.

Though Jack wanted a boy first, he would be grateful should Beth give him a girl. He had waited far too long for a child to get upset with having a girl. Since Beth was able to get pregnant, he could always try again for a boy.

"A girl would be wonderful at some point. Just be sure to take care of yourself and eat more. You look to be getting smaller instead of growing bigger like everyone else. Is this normal?" Jack questioned, confused by her small frame. How long did the doctor say she was pregnant?

"It is normal for me to be so small and then the change seems to happen overnight. The doctor said that I was healthy and doing well so there is nothing to worry about. He expected us to overreact because it was our first child. He warns us not to," said Beth.

Beth cursed herself. She had to fit into the wedding dress she picked out but she still needed to look pregnant. If only her plan at the ball had worked to pretend that Scarlet had cost her to lose the baby, she wouldn’t be going through all of this now.

Beth held onto Jack’s arm as she walked. ’It is your fault,’ she blamed Jack. What Chester said was more believable now as no matter what she did, she could not get pregnant. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

It was unfair how demanding a man who could not do his part to make a baby was. If only Jack knew what she did, he would be quiet when it came to children.

Beth knew that it was not herself who had the problem since she had a scare once upon a time that she was able to make go away. With Jack’s issue, she had to sleep with a man and Beth did not know who to pick.

"I need you to go home and carefully pick out what you will wear to the palace. Practise how you will speak to the king. I will call upon someone to teach you what you lack. Have them there tomorrow morning," Jack instructed Kevin.

Beth laughed as it was ridiculous to hear that she needed to be tutored. "I know how to speak to the king or queen. I do not need someone to tell me. I might not have had fancy learning as you did, but I am not a fool. Please trust me with this."

Beth had long prepped herself to speak well before those with status. She had easily presented herself as similar to a young heiress when she first met Jack. He shouldn’t underestimate her talent for acting.

"I will trust you but a close meeting with the royals is not a time to make a fool of yourself. They are close to Scarlet so they won’t miss the chance to test you. If Scarlet is present, you must not speak to her. Do you understand?" Jack asked.

"I do. I saw her today while I was shopping. She came to where I was and made a scene. The princess was there with her as well. She is still upset that I am carrying your child. I only want there to be peace and shop without any trouble, but she wouldn’t allow it," Beth said, twisting the story before it could reach Jack.

The story would already be twisted in more ways than one by the woman who witnessed her interaction with Scarlet. Jack wouldn’t know what was the truth.

Jack stopped walking and turned to Beth. "That isn’t like her. She wouldn’t pick a fight with you."

Beth’s smile disappeared. What on earth was Jack doing? He had believed her at the ball so why was he finding it hard to believe now? "You mustn’t underestimate how much she would dislike that you are moving on. That you are going to have a child. That can change anyone."

Jack didn’t know what to think since Scarlet wasn’t acting like herself by keeping Ian around. He only knew that he didn’t want Beth near Scarlet.
