Chapter 105: Change in plans (1)

"That woman wants me to fire you but that will not happen. Surely you must know where I can employ someone to get rid of her," said Beth.

Chester looked at Beth as though she had finally turned crazy. He was already deep into her lie about being pregnant and now, she wanted him to do this? "I cannot-"

"You will. I’ve been providing you with a lot of money and thanks to me, look at where you are now," Beth said, looking around the brand-new office. This was more suited to her taste. "I have given you a better life. Do not cross me as I can still take away all this from you." freewebnσvel.cѳm

"You’ve even bought a new place for your family," Beth added. "Don’t look so surprised. You couldn’t have possibly thought that I wasn’t keeping an eye on you, did you? I don’t trust you yet."

"If you can do that, why can’t you have someone who is looking into me to help you to kill your mother-in-law?" Chester asked.

Murder was a lot more dangerous than helping her to fake being pregnant. It was guaranteed that he could lose his life if anyone ever found out about his role in Dorothy Humphrey’s death.

Beth knew that she could do that but she preferred to have Chester be the one to do it. He was so scared that he wasn’t going to speak of this to anyone so he would not die. "Because I like you," she answered.

There was something to enjoy about having so much control of another person’s life because of money. There was no way for Chester to say no to her unless he wanted to end up dead somewhere.

"You are going to do this for me and I want it to happen fast. There is no telling when she intends to bring that doctor to me. She suspects something," Beth said, angered just by thinking back on the day. "I want you to have it done by the end of the day. She has to travel soon to see her sister. Do not disappoint me."

Chester couldn’t go on like this. He was many things but he was not going to aid in setting up for someone to die. For an innocent woman who was only getting close to the truth to die.

How could Beth even think of murdering the mother of the man she was about to marry?

’I should have never agreed to her plans,’ Chester thought.

Lying about Beth being pregnant was the beginning of his life becoming miserable.

"I will not join you in killing an innocent woman. Please leave," Chester pointed to the door.

Beth remained seated as she practically owned the office they were sitting in. She owned Chester so it was quite reasonable to think she owned everything belonging to him. "You mustn’t be this way with me, Chester. You cannot turn your back on me when all that you have now is because of me. I can ruin you."

Chester stood up from his chair. "You’ve already ruined me by what you have asked me to do."

"I didn’t point a gun to your head and force you to agree. You did that with a little dangling of money before your face. Sit back down, Chester. Our little arrangement has not ended unless you wish to move your family out of the home you have now," said Beth.

Beth liked that she had found Chester because he was easy to read. He was no different than her in wanting to go higher in this town. Chester was proud to be able to give his family a new place to live and seeing their happiness, he wasn’t going to be so quick to take it away from them.

"Sit down, Chester. We have much to speak about. Besides, you will not be the one to kill her. You are hiring someone to do it so there is no need for you to get so dramatic. Sit down," Beth repeated once more.

She already shared what she wanted done with Chester and she was not leaving until he agreed to do it.

"Why can’t you just become pregnant? Have you been honest that you were-"

"I have been doing my best to have it happen. Not once have I ever sought a way to stop myself from becoming pregnant. I’ve done all kinds of things to make it happen. Sleeping with him when I have no interest in it yet all my efforts were for nothing. Time is running out," Beth said, worried about Dorothy uncovering the truth.

"And his first wife never had a child," Chester noted. "Did they share a bed a lot?"

Beth didn’t want to hear about Scarlet. "How would I know? I started to take up his time but he still had to go home to her. He did say that she wouldn’t let him touch her but I always thought he was saying that to make me happy."

At first, it came as a blessing to Beth that Jack left the marriage without having a child with Scarlet, but now she thought it would have been wonderful since there would be a way Jack was tied to the estate. The only bad side would be to have their children compared.

"Have you not considered that it is him?" Chester asked.

"What? Do not try to distract me from what I have asked you to do," Beth replied.

She didn’t care about what Chester was going on about now.

"I meant if it has never crossed your mind that Jack Humphrey is the reason why you nor his first wife has had a child. If she was never with another man, there was no way to test if it wasn’t Jack who was the problem. I’ve heard that there is another man now-"

"What did you just say?" Beth asked, still stuck on what Chester said about Jack.

"I said that there is a possibility that he is the reason why you have not been successful. There is an equal chance that you are the one who cannot have a child but seeing that his first marriage ended without a child, I think it is safe to look into him," Chester further explained.

There was nothing Beth could do if Jack was unable to do his part in giving her a child. Chester needed to hear news of Scarlet being pregnant for his theory to have a little more truth to it but at this point, Chester believed Jack was the problem.

Beth couldn’t believe what she was hearing. If what Chester said was true then she had accidentally created a big problem for herself by claiming to be pregnant just to upset Scarlet.

Should anyone tell Jack that he could not have a baby, Beth knew him well enough to know he would blame the woman he slept with and cast her aside to try again with another. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

The town already went ahead with the story that Scarlet was the one who couldn’t have a child and Jack used that to his advantage for many to pity him.

"Never repeat what you said to anyone. As far as you know, Jack is perfectly capable of having a child," said Beth.
