Chapter 104: Feelings (2)
"How long have you known?" Nolan asked.
"Does it matter?" Scarlet replied as that wasn’t important now.
"I just wish to know how long you have known and said nothing," Nolan said as he had liked to believe that he hid his feelings well.
"It wasn’t me who had to say something at first. I ignored it with hopes that it would go away. What did you wish for me to say? That you can wait for me?" Scarlet questioned.
She never had anything to say about his feelings other than they should stop. Scarlet made her answer quite obvious by turning down his request to let him escort her somewhere.
"I have known you for a long time so it was harder to address your feelings as opposed to how fast I do it with others. I had hoped that with how well you knew me, you wouldn’t have held on this long or done something so childish as breaking what is mine. I underestimated how much your feelings toward me were," Scarlet admitted.
She should have addressed this long ago but seeing how Nolan didn’t want them to take a break working with each other, she might have faced the same outcome no matter when she addressed this.
"I am not firing you forever. I am just parting ways with you for a moment to give you time to think and try to get over your feelings. I only want a professional relationship between us from now on and then from there we could be friends," said Scarlet.
Nolan couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He never thought there would come a day when Scarlet would no longer have him around. "At least tell me, why him and not me?"
Scarlet found this to be all the more reason she couldn’t have him around. "I don’t need to give you an answer and at this time, why would you want to know? I came here to address your feelings making you cross a line and you do this."
Scarlet wanted to laugh but knew it would hurt Nolan more since he had just been fired. With his father working for her now and them having to see each other in other spaces, Scarlet didn’t want to end today on a bad note.
Scarlet didn’t need Nolan as one more person she had to watch out for. She was as kind as she could be when speaking of this.
Nolan didn’t like that this was how their conversation had gone. He knew that it was coming but he had still remained positive. He thought that he would have a moment to show off his office and then they would be able to sit and speak about other things.
Not only did it hurt to lose her as a client but it hurt because he had to be away from someone he considered a friend. Nolan wished to know when she learned of his feelings because he wanted to know when he had slipped up.
Did Scarlet find out during the time she was married to Jack or now that she had Ian in her life? Had Ian pointed it out?
"I have always known that you wouldn’t like me back. When I asked you for the ball, I did it so I could be near you but at the same time, I wanted to protect you. When it comes to Ian, I am worried that you do not know-"
"Nolan, I do not want to hear this," Scarlet said, not needing his overprotectiveness again. "I have nothing more to say to you so I will leave now. Please turn your feelings elsewhere as I am not the woman for you. I look forward to working with you again but that all depends on how you act."
"Have a good day," Scarlet added, ready to leave. She walked toward the door so she could go before this might turn messier.
"Since I am not your lawyer, then I see it that I am free to protect you as a friend," said Nolan.
Scarlet stopped just as she was about to open the door. "Nolan, I am warning you not to get involved in my life. I have already told you to stop and any more meddling will be the end of me ever hiring you again. Do not try to be what you are not."
Scarlet was still putting up with Jack and his nonsense though he was engaged. She didn’t need another jealous man added to her life. Nolan should understand better than most that what he was doing wasn’t going to make her be grateful to him.
Nolan wished it was so simple to just not want to protect her. Scarlet had been having a harsh month so he felt the need to protect her. Especially with a man many didn’t know much about being around her.
Scarlet wasn’t thinking right since the divorce in Nolan’s opinion.
Scarlet opened the door to let Dawson be present. "Nolan, if you continue to be this way, I will treat you as I treat others. You are not my brother or lover to be so involved in my life. Stop now before this office loses an owner," she warned.
Dawson looked to Scarlet who was irritated and then at the man on the brink of tears. He didn’t care to have the full story. He already considered Nolan someone to keep away from Scarlet. "Your order, Milady."
"Nolan is no longer my lawyer so he has no reason to show up at my estate or near me. Do not let him get close," Scarlet said and then walked out the door. Before Nolan could say something more that could put him on the list of the people she wanted Dawson to forcibly remove on sight and ask questions later, she had to go.
Dawson remained by the door, smiling as he had a new target. He reached into his coat to pull out his gun a little to give a warning to Nolan. He wasn’t the slightest bit concerned that he showed it to a lawyer or that he was surrounded by other lawyers. freeweɓnøvel.com
"That doesn’t scare me," Nolan said, unphased by the gun. He knew that all of Scarlet’s guards walked around with guns. He liked it as it was the best way to keep her safe.
The gun didn’t scare him because he knew that Dawson couldn’t use it here and Scarlet would not allow her guard to harm him. They weren’t in a good place right now but that wouldn’t last forever. Soon he would be back at Scarlet’s side as her lawyer and what was said here would be forgotten.
"This is only a warning. Not meant to scare you but for you to know how you might lose your life. Stay away from her. I’d hate to be forced to watch your pathetic chase when she doesn’t want you," Dawson said, not wanting to see the sad sight.
It always annoyed Dawson to see someone failing to court another person. He might just shoot Nolan over having to witness it.
"Don’t you have to chase after her?" Nolan asked, wanting Dawson out of his sight?"
"You would know a lot about chasing her, wouldn’t you?" Dawson teased, laughing as he left to follow Scarlet.
