Chapter 103: Feelings (1)
Scarlet fulfilled her promise the next day by travelling from her estate to see Nolan. They had much to speak about and it was prolonged long enough. She had made a terrible discovery after thinking about something that occurred days ago and had to address it now.
Harry opened the carriage door and helped Scarlet out. She was followed closely behind by Dawson.
"I won’t be long Harry. No need to take the carriage elsewhere," Scarlet said.
Knowing Nolan, this conversation wouldn’t be finished in one day for him but for Scarlet, once she got her point across to him that was it for her. She had turned a blind eye to his feelings for her but now she could no longer do it.
It had nothing to do with the petty arguments Nolan had with Ian but everything to do with Nolan crossing a line.
Scarlet entered the tall building which belonged to Nolan’s father. She didn’t like coming here because of Nolan’s peers trying to get her to hire them. Rather than be her lawyer and deal with matters she needed to be taken care of they tried to cross another line she set.
They were always thinking that they knew better than her in matters concerning her businesses. As if she didn’t have the proper training or schooling for her position, treating her like a little girl at times yet staying silent for many of their other clients.
Scarlet headed toward the desk at the entrance but was stopped before she could speak.
"Scarlet!" Nolan called. He had been waiting for her to arrive as he expected her visit.
Nolan tried to think of what Scarlet wished to speak about that she would come all the way instead of letting him go to her estate or visit the hotel. This screamed trouble but he was doing his best to remain calm.
"Good afternoon, Nolan. Were you on your way out? I’m a bit early," said Scarlet.
Nolan smiled as he knew she would be early. She would always want to be on time so she could leave early. "No. I was waiting for you here. Follow me. Your guard doesn’t need to come any further."
"I don’t leave her side," Dawson replied, drawing closer to Scarlet. He didn’t care how close the two were. What could this man before him do to protect Scarlet?
"Dawson will stay outside of your office. Will that make everyone happy?" Scarlet asked, putting an end to this. She wouldn’t be here for long to need Dawson to step inside the office.
Nolan led the two to his office which he was excited to show Scarlet. It was time that she got to see his current position in his father’s business. It wasn’t as grand as Scarlet’s many offices but he was getting up there slowly. He was determined from the start to prove himself as a good lawyer so no one could say that he owed his father his career.
Scarlet entered the office which was a decent size. It suited Nolan for all the work he did. "So, this is what your father spoke about."
"Yes. It was a nice gift. It came as a surprise since I told him not to give me any special rewards because I am his son but I do enjoy a larger office," said Nolan.
"Why deny being spoiled? Everyone knows that you are his son and regardless of what you do, you will be criticised. He tries too hard to act normal when he’s the boss’s son or he only has a new office because of his connections. Just let him spoil you," Scarlet advised Nolan.
Life would be hard trying not to upset anyone as there would always be someone who didn’t like what you did.
"I will consider it. Would you care for some tea? My skills are getting better," Nolan said, ready to show off.
"No thank you. Nolan, did you break my teapot?" Scarlet asked, wanting to get to the point of her visit.
After some thinking, she came to the conclusion that Nolan might have some role in the broken piece. When putting away the teapot so it wouldn’t be broken again, she thought back to what happened that day and remembered that Nolan was alone in the room.
"Please tell me that your feelings aren’t so out of control that you would break what Ian gave me," Scarlet added. She was giving him the chance to tell her that she was wrong.
It could be that the teapot broke by itself and she had guessed wrong. Scarlet could take that she guessed wrong and apologise for accusing him.
"Is that what he said? Of course, he would take the opportunity to blame me," Nolan argued. He had hoped that she would never point her finger at him. He had made a grave mistake and greatly regretted it.
"Ian has nothing to do with this and I would prefer if you had just apologised immediately. I cannot do this anymore," Scarlet said as it was getting hard to ignore his feelings.
She only wanted Nolan around as her lawyer and a few times as a friend. Anything more than that made her uncomfortable, especially with how he acted with a man courting her. Scarlet was not his to protect from other men. She had a mind of her own.
Nolan knew that this might be coming but he couldn’t let Scarlet push him away yet. "I apologise for my actions then. I was embarrassed that I broke it and couldn’t face you afterwards. It won’t happen again." freewebnøvel.com
"I’m afraid that I am at a point where I need some space from you. I would like to avoid a bigger problem in the future and you could use the time apart to clear your head. I’ve already spoken to your father about using him-"’
"I can still work as your lawyer. My feelings have never gotten in the way of that. I handled your divorce as I would with anyone else and the complaints from your relatives. I have never failed you as a lawyer so why?" Nolan questioned, frustrated that it was coming to this.
"You are a good lawyer," Scarlet agreed. She would never deny that. "I wouldn’t have let you work for me for so long if you weren’t talented but your feelings have started to have you getting too involved in my personal life. To be so angry that you would break something belonging to me, I must be cautious."
Scarlet was raised not to take any chances with anyone when they showed their bad side. Some time away from Nolan would be good for both of them. Mostly him as he needed to understand the type of relationship they had.
Scarlet had given him chance after chance to move on but she couldn’t wait anymore.
"I would never hurt you," said Nolan. He was only ever trying to protect her.
Scarlet nodded her head. "That I know but I can’t have a man who has feelings for me work for me when I will never be able to return those feelings. It is sometimes uncomfortable knowing the reason behind some of your actions and at times, I feel sorry for you. That is not what I should be thinking when we are dealing with business matters."
