Chapter 102: Secret (4)
"I’ll find out what happened to her," Victor said, wanting to prove himself useful to Ian. He had to make up for all the times that he caused Ian to be punished by his mother. "If I can find out what happened to her, is there a chance that we can try to be brothers?"
Victor wasn’t ready to give up on their relationship becoming better. They could become close outside of the estate. Ian didn’t have any relatives other than his mother so Victor had to be near so Ian would not be alone.
Ian didn’t answer as he wasn’t certain about them ever being close in the future. Instead, he asked, "How much do you love your mother?"
Victor didn’t understand why he needed to answer this question."I love her a lot. I know that she has her moments of being bad but I can’t help loving her. She’s my mother."
Victor would never act like he didn’t know his mother could be cruel. He saw her ways and knew that she was wrong. Still, he loved her just as he loved his father and many of his other relatives.
"Then do not push to be at my side because I hate your mother. We’ll never be close because being around you means that I have to see her. Should something happen to her, are you willing to call me your brother?" Ian asked.
Victor couldn’t answer. Like he said to his mother, he didn’t want to have to pick between the two. Why couldn’t he have his mother and his brother at the same time? The two didn’t need to be in the same room just understood that they were in his life and not trouble each other.
There was always something between Ian and his mother. Should something bad happen, Victor didn’t know what he would do.
"I didn’t think so," Ian said, done with their conversation. "I have work to do so find your way out."
"I love my mother," Victor started. "And I am not a fool to not know that you are here for revenge. I have no plans of telling you not to hurt her nor will I get in your way. Whatever happens with my mother is because of her actions."
Ian smiled as what Victor said might be enough to have that woman die from her heart hurting. He didn’t believe it right way that should he harm Layla, Victor would do nothing as he couldn’t stop seeing his brother as the boy who couldn’t break away from his mother.
Unless Victor wanted to use someone else to get out of her hold?
"A few of the servants from when you were home are still on the estate. I will ask around about Noelle and when I find something, can I come here to tell you or to your home?" Victor asked, excited for another visit.
"Victor," said Ian.
"Yes!"
"If you bring me false news about what happened to Noelle just so you can be around me, it will be your ashes that get sent around. While this is like a game for you to try getting close to me, this is about a woman who was like a mother to me. Do not waste my time," Ian warned.
His patience with Victor would run out if Victor brought him lies.
"I liked Noelle as well to not bring you lies. I wish that I knew something about where she went. After you left, my mother forbade me from going to the cottage and then years later there was a fire. I gathered what wasn’t destroyed and tried to send it to you recently. Did you not receive it?" Victor asked.
Ian couldn’t help but laugh. Victor truly was too gullible. "I was sent ashes in a box. Tell me, who has the power to change what you sent? Rather than try to become my brother, I wish for you to wake up and stop being controlled. You’ll be pathetic all your life if you let her control you."
Ian proceeded to his office since he had spared enough time with Victor. If Victor wanted to stand still outside, then he was free to do so. Ian entered his office and closed the door. A few days from now or even tomorrow, he would have to deal with the headache that is Layla Kingsley.
If Victor wasn’t so attached to his mother or if she didn’t control him like a puppet, then Ian would have considered making an effort to be brothers right now. However, Victor became under a spell when his mother came around so it was hard to trust him.
Ian walked to his desk, thinking of calling to see if Scarlet enjoyed the tea. He was busy for most of the day and had to send Owen to her, but a call could be made so he hadn’t gone another full day without speaking to her.
"Ian!"
Ian frowned upon hearing Owen’s voice. "How is he here already?"
Owen opened the door, not waiting for Ian to permit him to enter. "Do you know that your brother is out there? He looks a bit sick."
Ian thought back to how Victor looked before him and didn’t think that there was anything off about him then. "He’ll be fine. What does your loud mouth need to tell me? Did she like the tea?"
"You didn’t tell me to stay and watch her drink. Thank goodness," Owen sighed, placing his hand on his chest. "That woman- Scarlet," he corrected himself after a terrifying look from Ian. "Scarlet and all the people who work for her are scary. I am not going back on her estate."
"Grow a pair because you are the only one I will be sending to her," Ian replied, dismissing Owen’s fear.
"I almost ruined your relationship with her so you-" freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"What the fuck did you do?" Ian questioned, his patience now gone. He gave Owen one simple task to just deliver a teapot. He didn’t need to open his mouth to say anything to her.
"She asked me how long I had known you and one thing led to another with me saying that I was surprised that you entertained her. The good news is," Owen said, taking a step back toward the door. Now might not be the best time to speak to Ian. "She took it as a joke and laughed. I just think that with my tendency to talk a lot, I shouldn’t go back there."
"You’re finally admitting that you have a loud mouth. This just proves that I can’t send anyone to do my job," Ian said, deciding to be the one to send the tea. "Get out of my sight, Owen."
"You have a terrible temper, Ian. How is it that you are courting a woman while I remain alone while I am the charming one? Oh! Did you hear that the Kingsley are having a party? Do you think you will get invited?" Owen asked.
Ian already knew about the party which was to be in Victor’s honour. He remembered these parties that would have nothing to do with Victor’s birthday. Layla just wanted to have a reason to speak about how wonderful her son was.
Even if they were to send an invitation to put on an act that they cared for him, Ian wasn’t going.
