Chapter 223: Befriending The Enemy
After the incident with Agnes, they stayed in Drakin for a while to sort things out. The castle had to go through repairs. Surprisingly, Agnes survived her plummet to the ground.
She was barely breathing and she had broken nearly every bone in her body. She begged for someone to kill her, for the amount of agony she was in, but no one heed her pleas.
Once most of the matters were settled and Alistair and Sierra were well enough to travel, they immediately set forth for Cair. They had sent word ahead of time of their impending arrival, so everything was ready to go.
"Do we really need to rush it like this? We could always wait a while before-"
"Wait?" Alistair mused as he cupped Sierra’s chin, "I can’t wait anymore, sweetling. I am tired of not being married to you."
Sierra blushed beet red. She pulled herself away from him and punched him on the arm.
"We’re not the only ones in this carriage you know," she mumbled as she crossed her arms.
Vy and Dygo chuckled as they watched the pair. She leaned her head against Dygo’s arm with a smile on her face. She was happy for Sierra.
When they finally arrived at the capital city in Cair, the common folk were out on the streets to cheer for the return of their Queen. Alistair was amused by the warm welcome they received.
They were greeted by their friends and family in the castle.
General Leon Bancroft was one of the first people to walk up to Sierra and embraced her in a warm tight hug. Realizing he had forgone decorum, he quickly released her and bowed respectfully.
"Welcome back, Your Majesty. We’re so happy that you’ve returned safe and sound," he said stiffly while trying to hide the embarrassment on his face.
Sierra placed a hand on his shoulder as he straightened his back, "It’s good to be back, father."
Amongst those who welcomed their return was Cassandra. Her injuries have healed nicely and she was able to stand on her own two feet again.
"You look well, Cassandra. How are your wounds?" Sierra asked.
"Healing well, Your Majesty," she replied monotonously.
Sierra could feel the air of awkwardness between the both of them. After all, the two young women had never been friends. But that was all in the past.
Sierra opened her arms and wrapped Cassandra in an embrace, surprising the royal consort and others who witnessed it.
"Your Majesty... what are you..." Cassandra could barely piece her words together.
"Thank you, Cassandra. If it wasn’t for you I don’t think I would’ve ever been able to see Alistair again."
After catching up with one another, Sierra and Alistair were ushered off to get some early rest. The wedding preparations were completed. All that was left was for them to get married.
But there were still things to be done before then. Sierra and Alistair asked to meet Cassandra in private. They sat down together in a drawing room, drinking wine with some light snacks.
"I assume this has to do with what is to happen after the both of you get married? I have no qualms with Sierra being Queen. As for my Kingdom, you need not worry, I will handle that..."
"That’s not what we’re here to discuss. Although it is comforting to know that you will handle things, thank you, Cassandra," Alistair explained.
Cassandra furrowed her eyebrows. If they were not here to discuss that, what were they here to discuss? Caught completely off guard by the two of them, she did not know what to expect. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
"We have a proposition for you, Cassandra," Sierra explained with a smile, "How would you like to be Queen?"
Her eyes grew wide, "Queen? Queen of what?"
"Queen of Sumera, your home kingdom," Sierra mused.
"What? How... how?" She could not understand how it would be possible.
The fate for her kingdom was set the day she was born. With no male heirs, Cassandra could only marry for power. That was the way it had always been in Sumera. Never in a million years would she think she would be able to rule in her own right.
"I can’t... it’s not possible," she reasoned, though she could barely believe her own words. freēwēbnovel.com
Because she was born of a different gender, she was not given the option to rule. How unfair.
"Impossible? If you were to tell me I would become Queen months ago, I would have laughed in your face. But look at where we are now, Cassandra. Don’t you think it’s possible now?" Sierra appealed to her.
She looked over at Sierra and Alistair skeptically. She leaned back in her seat as she folded her arms and let out a sigh.
She chuckled, "I see what’s going on now. And just when I thought..."
She almost fell into Sierra and Alistair’s trap, that’s what she thought was going on. Cassandra thought this was their ploy to get rid of her. They lure her in with a false promise of something that was near impossible to refuse.
Once she was on the hook and she did as they asked they would dispose of her.
"Just when you thought what?" Sierra asked, confused by what she meant.
She slammed her hand down on the table, causing Sierra and Alistair to jolt in their seat. Cassandra’s face was red with anger.
"Don’t you dare act dumb with me! You’re lying to me, to get me out of the picture so that the two of you can have a life together. Well, you’re never going to get that, not at my expense," she yelled.
Sierra was stunned. The confusion she had quickly faded away as she put the pieces of the puzzle together in her mind. From Cassandra’s words, she quickly realized what assumptions she had made and how wrong they were.
So, she decided to deal her the hard truth, "Cassandra, if I really wanted to get rid of you, I could’ve just let you die when Vy and Dygo found you. You were already close to death anyways. Do you really think I would have to wait till now to do it?"
"But-"
"Would I have to spare no resources to get you all healed up? I could have easily patched you up and sent you on your way," Sierra added.
