Chapter 16: The Lizardkin’s Trial

Rex woke before dawn, the two-week deadline pressing on his mind. He slipped out of the hut and went to the forge, shaping copper, preparing weapons.

He opened his blueprint menu, looking for an edge against the Mouths.

He selected it.

Rhea found him an hour later, hair mussed from sleep. "You’re up early."

"Couldn’t sleep."

She studied the materials. "What are you building?"

"Barricades. The Mouths will come from the south. I want to make sure they can’t just walk in."

She nodded and went to fetch Tor and Fen.

By midday, the first barricade was complete , a wall of sharpened logs angled outward.

Rex gathered his inner circle. "We need allies. Nara, the Lizardkin?"

"Their hunting grounds are threatened by crystal spiders. Clear the nest, and they may consider an alliance."

"Then that’s our next move. Rhea, Nara, Tor, and I leave tomorrow."

The rest of the day was spent crafting arrowheads, reinforcing the ancient sword, packing supplies and mana batteries. That night, Rhea sat beside him. "What if they refuse?"

"Then we find another way. We don’t stop."

She nodded. "Good answer."

They left at sunrise. The Lizardkin territory was a day’s walk south. Midway, they found a massive crystalline web stretched between trees.

"Don’t touch it," Nara warned. "It’ll cut through skin like stone knives."

By evening, they reached a cliff-face village, stone platforms, rope bridges, fires in alcoves. Tall reptilian figures watched from above.

Guards called out in a hissing tongue. Nara translated. "They’ll meet with us, but only you must pass a trial, combat against their champion."

Rhea gripped his arm. "Rex..."

"I can do this."

He stepped forward. The champion emerged, seven feet of dark green scales, bone club, stone shield.

Stronger, faster, more experienced, but Rex had fire.

He drew his copper sword. The champion charged. Rex dodged; the club shattered stone. He rolled, came up swinging. Sparks flew as sword met shield. The champion swung again; Rex ducked and jumped back.

He activated [FIRE BREATH].

Flames engulfed the champion. It recoiled, scales smoking. Rex seized the opening, slicing its side.

The champion swung wide; Rex rolled away. He spotted the shield’s fraying straps, weakened by the heat. He feinted left, lunged right, and smashed through the leather and stone. The shield fell apart. The champion, now unarmed, lowered its head in submission.

The elder Lizardkin stepped forward, headdress marking its status. "Fire-Bringer. You fight with honor. The tribe accepts you."

Rex caught his breath. "We need your help. The crystal spiders. The Mouths of Valthorion. We need allies against the dragon."

The elder hissed. "The dragon is our enemy too. Clear the nest first. Then we will fight beside you."

"Where is it?"

"Two hours east. The caves beneath the mountain. Bring your fire."

They moved out immediately. The cave air was sharp with metallic venom. Rex’s dragon eyes pierced the gloom; the others relied on torches.

The first spider dropped from the ceiling. Rex sliced upward.

More swarmed. Rex used [FIRE BREATH] to burn webs. Rhea’s ancient sword blazed. Tor swung his copper axe. Nara threw knives.

They pushed deeper. The queen waited, twice the size of the others, jagged crystals covering its body.

"Focus on the queen!" Rex shouted. "Kill it and the rest scatter!"

Rhea charged. The queen spat venom; Rhea dodged, but it hit Tor’s shield, warping the copper. Tor took cover. Rhea’s sword bit into the queen’s leg.

The queen lunged. Rex unleashed [FIRE BREATH] into its face.

It screamed, retreating. Rhea leaped, driving her blade through its eye.

She looked at him. "I love you."

Rex blinked. "What?"

"I’ve never said that to anyone. Not since my mother died. But I mean it."

He touched her face. "I... love you too."

She kissed him, long and deep.
