Chapter 15: The Morning After
Dawn crept over the village. Rex sat at the forge, the ancient copper sword across his knees. He hadn’t slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the scroll’s words: A sacrifice of great value. What kind? A life? A soul?
Rhea found him. "You didn’t sleep."
"Couldn’t."
She sat beside him, her good hand finding his. "The scroll thing still bothers you."
"It’s what it means. Valthorion wasn’t always a dragon. He was someone who made a choice, and that choice turned him into a monster."
"Do you think you could make that choice?"
"No."
"Then don’t." She squeezed his hand and pulled him to his feet. "You’re not alone in this. You’re Rex... the man who built a wall, killed a wolf, made peace with goblins"
They joined the village at the central fire. Marta handed out grain porridge. Tor and Fen sharpened copper axes. Mira practiced spear thrusts. Nara sat apart, chanting softly, Screech on her shoulder.
Rex sat beside her. "What are you doing?"
"Asking the spirits for guidance." She opened her eyes. "That ruin was older than the dragon, older than the goblins. The Binding of Flesh... it’s not just about Valthorion. It’s how dragons are made. And the same ritual could unbind one."
"Unbind?"
"If you had Valthorion’s soul and performed the ritual in reverse, you could strip his power. Make him mortal. But it requires the same components: dragon’s blood, an elder stone, and a sacrifice of great value... something irreplaceable. A life. A bond. A piece of your soul."
Rex was silent. To kill a monster, you have to give up what makes you human. He pushed the thought aside.
During a break, Tor approached. "What about the other tribes? South of the river, there are the Stone Fists. They worship Valthorion, give him offerings. They took my sister years ago. If they learn about you, they’ll attack."
Rex put a hand on his shoulder. "I’m sorry, Tor."
"Can you promise we’ll be ready?"
"I’ll do everything I can."
Tor nodded. That was enough.

In the afternoon, Rex used a mana battery to power a new blueprint.
[RUNIC ETCHING (TIER 2.5)]
[COST: 15 MANA]
[REQUIRES: 1 COPPER ITEM, 1 MANA BATTERY (20+ STORED)]
[MANA: 85 → 70]
His hands moved with purpose, etching fire aspect and attack speed runes into the copper sword. The blade glowed faintly.
[COPPER SWORD UPGRADED: +5 FIRE DAMAGE, +5% ATTACK SPEED]
He handed it to Rhea. She felt its warmth and swung it, the blade leaving a heat trail. "Incredible."
She kissed him, quick and warmly. "Oh, right. The chieftain wants to see you."
Gorr sat on his skull platform, looking weary. "The Mouths are moving earlier than expected. Scouts saw them three days south. They’ll reach us in two weeks, maybe less. They’re not just collecting tribute anymore. They’re searching... For something"
Rex’s stomach tightened. "How many?"
"At least ten. We can fight and lose people, or hide you and they burn the village."
"Two weeks isn’t much. But it’s enough to turn this village into something they won’t expect."
At sunset, he assembled his inner circle around the central fire. Rhea, Nara, Tor, Fen, Marta, Mira.
"Two weeks. The Mouths are coming, and they’re hunting me supposedly. We have copper weapons, a watchtower, goblin allies. But we need more... fortifications, training for everyone who can fight, and new allies. Nara, the Lizardkin?"
She nodded. "They’re reclusive, but their hunting grounds are threatened by a crystal spider nest in the eastern caves. If we clear it, they might stand with us."
"Then that’s our next move. Clear the nest, earn the Lizardkin’s trust, build an army."
Rhea met his eyes. "And if the Mouths arrive before we’re ready?"
"Then we fight them. And we win."
"I’m with you," she said. The others echoed her.
That night, in the darkness of their hut, Rhea spoke quietly. "The Mouths were people once. Turned. Killing them..."
"We don’t have a choice." He took her hand. "It doesn’t make it easier."
She was silent a moment, then asked, "When this is over, what do you want?"
"A world where people don’t fear dragons. Where children grow up without tribute. Where a woman like you can be a warrior without burying everyone she loves."
"That’s a big dream."
"I’m a demon with spirit fire and copper tools. I’m allowed to dream big."
She laughed softly and kissed him, long and deep.

He had two weeks to prepare for war. He would make every second count.
