Chapter 14: The Map in the Dark
Rex woke to Rhea’s warmth and an unfamiliar notification.
[MANA COST REDUCTION DETECTED]
[TIER 1 BLUEPRINTS: 12% REDUCTION]
[TIER 1.5 BLUEPRINTS: 9% REDUCTION]
[TIER 2 BLUEPRINTS: 6% REDUCTION]
He blinked. Did the system just get cheaper? He checked... Campfire: 4 mana instead of 5. Simple Trap: 9 instead of 10. Watchtower: 28 instead of 30. Leveling up makes things cheaper. Nice.
Rhea stirred beside him. "You’re awake."
"Mhm"
She sat up, wincing as she moved her bound arm.
He watched her dress, the morning light catching the scars on her back. She caught him looking and smirked. "Enjoying the view?"
"Definitely"
She threw a fur at his face. "Get dressed. We have work."
They met Nara at the central fire, Screech on her shoulder. Tor and Fen were sharpening copper tools. Mira practiced spear thrusts nearby. Rex accepted a bowl of warm grain from Marta.
"Four days left," he said. "The watchtower’s built. Irrigation’s working. The smelter’s producing copper. But we still have the dragon’s tribute in eighty-six days, and we have that ancient map."
Nara nodded. "The ruin."
"I want to explore it thoroughly. The goblins had that stone symbol, they knew something. There might be weapons, knowledge. Something against Valthorion."
Rhea set down her bowl. "I’ll come."
"Your arm..."
"Will heal. I’m not letting you go without me." Her tone left no room for argument.
"Fine. If you get hurt, I’m carrying you back."
"Promises, promises."
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 30 → 31]
Rex ignored it.
They assembled a small expedition: Rex, Rhea, Nara, and Mira. Tor and Fen stayed to guard the village and continue copper production. The ruin was half a day’s walk, tucked between two rocky hills. The map showed a network of tunnels far larger than the single chamber they’d explored before.
Mira clutched her spear. "What do you think is down there?"
"Hopefully treasure," Rex said. "Probably monsters."
"Definitely monsters," Nara added. "The old places always have guardians."
They reached the ruin by midday. Rex pushed aside the curtain of vines. Darkness yawned before him.
[DRAGON EYES LV.1: ACTIVE]
[NIGHT VISION ENGAGED]
Stone walls. Ancient carvings. A staircase descending.
"Stay close. Watch your step."
Rex led with his dragon sight. Rhea followed, axe ready. Nara came next, Screech’s eyes glowing. Mira brought up the rear, spear trembling.
The tunnel opened into a large chamber. At its center stood a stone altar, and on it, a crystalline orb pulsing with inner light.
[MANA SENSE: DETECTED]
[PRIMITIVE MANA BATTERY]
[STORED MANA: 85/100]
Jackpot.
Rex reached for it. The moment his fingers touched the orb, the system flickered.
[MANA BATTERY ACQUIRED]
[STORED MANA: 85]
[CONNECT TO MANA POOL? Y/N]
He selected [YES].
[CONNECTION ESTABLISHED]
[INTEGRATING WITH MANA POOL...]
[DING! MANA POOL SUCCESSFULLY INTEGRATED]
[MANA POOL: 50/50 → 85/100]
[MANA BATTERY: 0/100]
Energy surged through him like a second wind. "Holy shit."
"What happened?" Rhea asked.
"I just found a power source. A big one."
Before he could explain further, a low rumble echoed through the chamber. The floor trembled.
[WARNING: HOSTILE DETECTED]
[CREATURE: ANCIENT GUARDIAN (GOLEM)]
[LEVEL: 18]
[THREAT: HIGH]
Stone cracked. From the far wall, a massive figure emerged, rock and crystal, ten feet tall, no face, only a glowing gem in its chest.
"Golem," Nara breathed. "Old magic"
The golem stepped forward. The ground shuddered.
"Copper won’t work," Rex said. "Something like that would definitely resists physical damage. I need an opening."
Rhea charged anyway, axe swinging. The golem batted her aside. She crashed into the wall but rolled back to her feet. Nara threw her obsidian knife, it bounced off, leaving only a scratch.
"Rex! Now!"
He activated [FIRE BREATH].
Blue-white flame erupted from his mouth. The golem raised its arms, but the fire found its chest gem.
CRACK.
The gem shattered. The golem froze, then crumbled to dust.
[ANCIENT GUARDIAN DEFEATED]
[+400 XP]
[LEVEL 6: 560/600 → LEVEL 6: 960/600 → LEVEL 7!]
[+5 STAT POINTS AVAILABLE]
[MANA: 75 → 100/100 (FULL REFRESH)]
Rex staggered, head spinning from the rush. Rhea was at his side instantly. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah. Just... a lot of energy."
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 31 → 33]
System, can you wait five minutes?
They searched the chamber. Behind the altar, a hidden alcove contained three more mana batteries (each 80/100), an ancient copper sword with runes carved along the blade, and a leather-wrapped scroll sealed with wax.
Rex examined the sword.
[ANCIENT COPPER SWORD (EPIC)]
[DAMAGE: 25-35]
[DURABILITY: 100/100]
[RUNES: FIRE ASPECT (ADDITIONAL 5 FIRE DAMAGE)]
[BONUS: +10% ATTACK SPEED]
"This is game-changing, literally." He handed it to Rhea.
She stared. "For me?"
"You’re the warrior. I’m the builder."
She took it, tracing the runes. "It’s warm."
"It’s got some Fire aspect. It’ll burn whatever you cut."
She kissed him quick and fiercly then pulled away.
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 33 → 35]
Seriously. Not now.
Rex opened the scroll. The system translated.
[ANCIENT SCROLL]
[TITLE: THE BINDING OF FLESH]
[CONTENT: A RITUAL TO PERMANENTLY BIND A DRAGON’S SOUL TO A MORTAL VESSEL]
[RESTRICTION: REQUIRES DRAGON’S BLOOD (FRESH), AN ELDER STONE, AND A SACRIFICE OF GREAT VALUE]
His blood went cold. This is how Valthorion was created. Or how he creates his Mouths.
"We’re leaving. Now."
Rhea caught his tone. "What did it say?"
"Nothing good. I’ll explain later."
They gathered the batteries and retreated. By sunset they reached the village. Rex sat by the fire, staring at the scroll. The Binding of Flesh.
Nara sat beside him. "You’re worried."
"That scroll is a recipe for creating monsters. For binding dragon souls to people."
"The Mouths," she said. "Valthorion’s servants."
"They weren’t always Mouths. They were people. Like you. Like Rhea."
Nara was quiet. "The old stories say Valthorion wasn’t always a dragon. That he was once something else. Something that made a deal with the dark"
Rex looked at the scroll again. "I’m not going to make that mistake. Whatever I become, I’ll still be me. I won’t let the dragon aspect eat my humanity."
Nara placed a hand on his shoulder. "That’s why the spirits chose you. Because you have the strength to resist."
Rex wasn’t sure he believed her. But he wanted to.
That night, Rhea found him at the forge, working copper runes, trying to replicate the ancient sword’s pattern.
"You’re still working."
"Can’t sleep. Too much on my mind."
She sat beside him. "The scroll. What does it mean for us?"
Rex set down his tools. "It means the dragon didn’t start as a dragon. He was someone once. He found a way to bind a dragon’s soul to his own."
"And the Mouths?"
"Same thing, weaker. He binds dragon shards to people. They become his collectors."
Rhea was silent. "Is that what’s happening to you?"
He met her eyes. "I don’t know. The system is giving me power, making me more dragon. But I’m still me. I still choose."
"And if the choice gets harder?"
He took her hand. "Then I’ll choose harder."
She squeezed his fingers. "Promise me. If the dragon tries to take you, you’ll fight. You won’t become what Valthorion is."
"I promise."
She kissed him, long and deep.
[DRAGON AFFINITY: 35 → 37]
I’m going to have to have a talk with this system.
But he pushed the thought away. Rhea was warm and real, and the world outside could wait. Just for tonight.
