Chapter 17: The Alliance Forged

They emerged from the cave into cold dawn light. The queen’s death had broken the nest’s hold; the air felt cleaner. Rhea walked beside him, hand in his. No words needed.

The Lizardkin elder waited at the entrance, flanked by warriors. Its golden eyes held something like respect.

"The nest is cleansed. You have kept your word."

Rex nodded. "We have."

"The Lizardkin will honor our agreement. We will send warriors to fight beside you against the dragon’s mouths."

"How many?"

"Twenty. More if needed." The elder paused. "But we require a bond. A pact sealed with blood. You will share your fire with us. In return, we will share our knowledge of the land, the hidden paths, the places the Mouths cannot find you."

Rex looked at the elder’s clawed hand, then took it. "I share my fire. You share your knowledge. We fight together."

"It is done."

The elder released his hand. "You are strong for a soft-skin. You will need that strength."

"I know."

The return journey was quieter. Rex led, mind racing—Level 10, crystal weaponry, a Lizardkin alliance. The Mouths were less than two weeks away. More resources than ever, but also more to protect.

The village greeted them with cheers. The Lizardkin were coming. Barricades rose. Water flowed.

That evening, Rex stood on the watchtower, watching the sunset paint the valley. Rhea climbed up. "You’re brooding."

"Thinking."

"Same thing." She joined him. "What is it?"

"The Mouths. It’s still going to be a long fight."

"A long fight we can win."

"You sound sure."

"Because we have you." She touched his face. "You don’t quit. You keep building, fighting, believing." She kissed him. "And I love you for it."

He pulled her close. The stars emerged.

[DRAGON AFFINITY: 42 → 44]

System, later.

The next morning, Rex gathered his inner circle. "We have a new blueprint—crystal weaponry. It’ll make weapons sharp, durable, deadly. We need spider crystals. The Lizardkin know where to find them."

Nara spoke: "I’ll coordinate with them."

"Good. Meanwhile, keep building... barricades, watchtowers, weapons. The Mouths are coming. I believe we can win, but only together."

The group dispersed. Rhea lingered. "You’re giving a lot of orders for someone who’s not a chief."

"You told me to lead."

She smiled. "And you’re doing a good job."

She kissed him and walked away. Rex felt a warmth that had nothing to do with the dragon.

The day was long but productive. Lizardkin warriors reinforced barricades. Crystal weapons took shape. By evening, Rex handed Mira a crystal-edged spear.

[CRYSTAL SPEAR (RARE)]

[DAMAGE: 20-28]

[DURABILITY: 80/80]

[BONUS: +15% ARMOR PENETRATION]

Mira’s eyes went wide. "For me?"

"You’re our best defender. You deserve the best spear."

She held it with trembling hands. "Thank you, Dragon-Bound."

"Just Rex. You’re welcome."

[REPUTATION CHANGE: RIVER FOLK +5]

[Current reputation: 75 (Allied)]

That night the village celebrated. Fires burned, stories traded. The Lizardkin shared tales of crystal spider battles and flights from the dragon’s shadow. Rex sat at the edge, watching. Rhea appeared.

"You’re not joining."

"I’m planning. The Mouths—"

"You’re always planning. When do you just... live?"

He was quiet. "I don’t know how."

She took his hand. "Then let me teach you."

She led him to the river, dark and calm, reflecting stars. They sat on the bank. "Just be," she said. "Don’t think. Don’t plan. Just be."

He closed his eyes, listening to water and wind. Rhea’s voice was soft. "What do you feel?"

"Peace. For the first time in a long time."

She leaned against him. "That’s all I wanted."

They stayed until the celebration faded and the village grew quiet. When they returned to the hut, Rex felt a sharp surge of happiness. Something he couldn’t not have felt back in the modern world.
