Chapter 44: Not the first time
"Why would you assume that?" Lu Xian lowered his head to her height, ’’I just genuinely wanted to lend you a hand when I saw you in that situation.’’
Daisy remained quiet and looked at him skeptically.
"With you current condition where you are not even holding any power in your family and doing some odd job in disguises, what can you offer me?"
’’Whatever your intentions are... thank you,’’ Daisy said sincerely. If not for him, no matter what, she would have been in a pickle if Ryle discovered the situation.
’’Then, I’ll take my leave now. I don’t think my men will be able to hold Harper’s people for a long time. It won’t be good for you if we get spotted together,’’ As Lu Xian got up and turned to leave, he paused near the door.
’’But truth to be told, this is not first time I am meeting you.’’
’’We met in the washroom,’’ Daisy mumbled softly.
The man chuckled, ’’Way before that, Miss. Chen, I can assure you.’’
With those words spoken, the man was gone. Daisy glanced at the closed door for a few seconds before she averted her gaze. It had been almost a day since she came to New York, and before she could have gotten a chance to contact Ivy, she landed herself in hospital. Ivy also must be worried given the circumstances under which she came here. Without wasting any time, she called home to know what they were up to.
In an underground basement in New York.
A woman was tied to a chair in a dark cell as two men and two women surrounded her with various torture weapons in their hands.
’’No... No... Let me go... I am begging you... let me go!!" she cried desperately, trying to swing her hands in air, only to realize they were roughly tied around the chair. Her vigorous movements had them graze against the rope roughly and she panicked even more.
’’If you want to go, then confess what you were up to,’’ one of the four people who were surrounding her spoke up, ’’Or else you won’t have the opportunity to say anything later.’’
’’No.. No...’’ The woman looked at the man who was standing in the dark, at a distance from the cell, ’’I swear, I only wanted to talk to you... There is nothing else. My father had received an invitation to this event and when I came to know that you might be here, I came here without hesitation...’’ the woman spoke amidst her sobs.
’’It has been a long time since I last saw you and I thought if I come here then there will be some chance for... for me to... to talk to you at least. I was annoyed when Dexter avoided me but I did not do anything to me. I poured wine on him from the glass I was drinking. It was not spiked...’’ the woman bit her bottom lips, her toes curling up in fear, ’’I was so desperate to meet you, to talk to you. What agenda I might possibly have against you...? I just wanted your attention..’’
Ryle stood there quietly as he looked at the woman who was trembling at that point, ’’It is time for Belvile to have a new governor.’’
Benjamin who was standing behind Ryle stepped to the side and made a call on his phone before he came back to Ryle’s side, ’’It’s done, Boss.’’
’’Good.’’
The woman’s eyes widened. She was horrified. She knew how terrific this man was but she had no idea that he had any control over her father’s position. She had believed that Ryle Harper was just a businessman, a desirable man, but a businessman nevertheless.
She screamed and shouted but the man just turned around and left. Heartless as he was, he did not stop once despite her relentless begging. And she was left there wondering where she went wrong. She regretted her actions from the bottom of her heart. She was so desperate to have this man that she defied all her father’s warnings before she came here and acted on impulse.
Once Ryle was in the car, he loosened his tie and leaned back on the seat, closing his eyes.
Benjamin kept peeking at the man from the rear-view mirror. He opened his mouth to speak but everytime he tried to say something, he hesitated and decided against it in the end.
’’If you have something to ask, shoot,’’ Ryle opened his eyes and glanced out of the windows.
’’Boss, she did not seem to lie...’’ Benjamin could not hold back his confusion.
’’She was framed,’’ Ryle responded.
’’Then, why...’’ freewebnσvel.cøm
’’She laid a hand on my people. Enough of a reason,’’ Ryle interrupted the man before he could finish.
’’It seems like the Second Son of the Lu Family lied to you and framed her on purpose...’’ Benjamin sighed, ’’But I can’t understand... what would he get out of it?"
Ryle frowned. That was something even he was unable to figure out no matter how he thought about it, ’’How is Dexter’s condition?"
’’I got a text from our people not long ago. They were obstructed by something when Dexter’s condition was being examined by the doctor. But they have talked to the doctor now and it seems Dexter is doing good.’’
’’Obstructed?"
Benjamin nodded, ’’There seemed to have been some street fight near the hospital and they were somehow dragged into it. I have looked into it. It doesn’t seem that serious,’’ he added the last words when Ryle remained quiet.
’’Fair enough,’’ Ryle raked his fingers through his hair.
But suddenly his movements paused.
A long strand of hair grazed his lips.
Ryle pulled his hands down from his hair. Under the lights, he could see a long dark hair stuck in his ring that went all the way to his shoulder. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
Ryle’s brows tugged together as he fell into contemplation.
...
The following day, by the time Daisy was discharged from the hospital, she got to know that Ryle had left for Los Angeles and just left a message behind for her that she can take a few days off if she wants to.
Surprised by his generosity, Daisy took the earliest flight to Los Angeles.
The following days were rather peaceful. Taking Ryle’s words seriously, Daisy did not shy away from taking a few days off to spend time with Angel.
"How long are you not planning to go to work for?" When Ivy walked out of her room in the afternoon, she found the mother and daughter duo sitting on the floor with a bowl of strawberries next to them as they solved a jigsaw puzzle.
’’For as long as I am not summoned,’’ Daisy lifted head and noticed the brush in Ivy’s hand, ’’Did you pull an all-nighter again?"
Ivy scratched the back of her neck, "It’s hard for me to fall asleep at night. I have given up at this point,’’ she shrugged.
’’Woo...’’
The small awed voice snatched both the ladies’ attention.
At some point, little Angel had shifted her attention from the jigsaw puzzle to cartoon playing on the TV.
’’shraw..bewiee...’’
’’bewiee...’’
The little girl stood up and wobbled over to the TV as she touched the strawberry cake displayed on it with sparkling eyes.
Daisy was helpless. Somehow, this little girl was just undeniably fond of strawberries.
"Do you want that?" Daisy leaned back on the couch as she watched the girl drooling and stroking the strawberry cake displayed on television.
’’Mommyyy...’’ As if she could understand it all, the little girl turned around and looked at Daisy with puppy eyes.
Daisy smiled and walked to the girl before pressing a soft kiss on her forehead. She tied her long hair up in a bun and picked up her phone from the couch.
’’Where are you going?" Ivy eyed the woman curiously. Initially, she was having cramps and she was sick so she stayed at home under the pretense of that but now she really did not look like she had intentions of going to work anytime soon.
’’To get the ingredients for strawberry cake.’’
Ivy was speechless.
In front of the same condominium.
’’Boss, there are two hours of buffer time before your meeting,’’ Benjamin checked the time on his watch as he spoke, ’’You can check up on Dexter’s condition and we will still be on time for the meeting,’’ he was surprised when his Boss asked him to take a turn towards Dexter’s place. But then, at this point, Benjamin had no doubts whatsoever that Dexter is a cherished asset of the man’s so these were the things he should be used to already.
’’Alright,’’ Ryle alighted the car followed by Benjamin.
Both the men had turned to walk in the direction of the entrance when Ryle suddenly paused in his tracks.
’’Boss...?" Benjamin trailed off when he followed the man’s gaze.
