Chapter 45: Suspicions and interrogation

’’16th July...’’

Daisy had just started picking ingredients for her cake when she heard her arranged ’wedding’ date being muttered right next to her. She had no such special feelings for that day whatsoever but it was an unforgettable day.

’’You are that runaway heiress?"

The familiar voice had a few packages slipping from her grasp.

Ryle lifted his brow when he saw her reaction, ’’It seems like I got the right person.’’

Initially he had been a little doubtful because he could not see the woman’s profile. He only managed to get a glimpse of the woman’s figure and somehow it overlapped with that of the gutsy woman in his memories. He had just followed her out of curiosity and he had uttered those very specific words to see if his guess was right or wrong.

However, her reaction told him that his guess was not wrong. Ryle waved his hand at Benjamin who was following right after him, motioning for him to wait outside.

’’But Boss...’’ Benjamin hesitated, considering Ryle’s safety. He scanned the supermarket warily before he approached the man and whispered, "Dexter is not around and your bodyguards are not around as well. I can’t rest assured if I leave you alone and there are enemies...’’

’’Where do you think you are going?" Ryle stopped the woman who was walking away with steady and silent footsteps.

As she halted in her tracks, he turned to his driver, ’’I don’t need you to protect myself. I am just meeting an old acquaintance. Wait for me outside."

After Benjamin walked out of the supermarket, Ryle approached the woman who was standing at a distance. But when he walked to stand in front of her, he was greeted by the sight of a face that did not match with that in his memory.

However, it was such a coincidence that he recognized the woman who was standing in front of her even though he had never met her before.

Months ago, when Diana came into his friend’s life with a child, Maxim had wanted him to investigate the whereabouts of one person. Daisy Chen. The child’s mother and Diana’s elder sister because Maxim was jealous by the growing closeness between Dexter and Diana. They were even living together. And Ryle, on purpose, had involved a capable individual like Dexter to track Daisy Chen down. But there were obstructions all the time and somehow, they could never get to Daisy.

Some time later, when Diana and Maxim started dating, Maxim, for some strange reason asked him to stop looking for Daisy. Even though Ryle did that, but it was always a mystery to him how the task that had seemed like a piece of cake to him turned out to be so complex in the end. He had looked into Daisy Chen’s background. Other than being the eldest daughter and rightful inheritor of the position of the head of the Chen Family, there was nothing that special about her.

Unbeknownst to Ryle, Maxim had asked him to look for Daisy because of Diana. But once the truth was out and it was revealed that Dexter was none other Daisy, he asked Ryle to stop looking for her.

’’Oh, was that you then?" Suddenly, something dawned on Ryle. His eyes flashed with amusement at the discovery that he had made, ’’The woman who barged into my room that night and threatened me with her pistol to lie on her behalf. That was you, wasn’t it?’’

"You got the wrong person,’’ Daisy finally uttered. She tried to look into his eyes as she spoke but she averted her gaze the moment their eyes met.

Later that night, in a glass mansion.

Ryle sat on the couch, his gaze fixated on the fire in the fireplace. Occasionally, there were some rustling noises from outside the room.

A parrot came flying in and sat on Ryle’s shoulder, ’’Ah, Master~" the bird moaned.

Ryle pinched the space between his brows, ’’How many times did I tell you to not pick things from the random people you see? What are you moaning for?"

He had left his pet in Maxim’s care during his absence but because of the parrot’s overly sexual antics of moaning and groaning, there was a misunderstanding between Maxim and Diana in their initial days. Diana thought the parrot belonged to Maxim and he had picked his lewd antics from Maxim’s private life who probably brought women home.

In return, Maxim held a long time grudge against Ryle for that.

"Ahh... Ah...’’

Ryle speechlessly grabbed the parrot and stroked it’s head with the tip of his index finger. His dark eyes moved out of the glass wall, looking into the night sky. freēwēbηovel.c૦m

There was something so amiss but he could not put a finger on it. He felt like he was there but he was not there yet.

His encounter with Daisy Chen had amused him but she adamantly refused ever having any interaction with him. Her initial denial seemed pretentious but when she started treating him like a complete stranger, Ryle did not hold her anymore.

He was not involved when his people were looking for Daisy Chen but he more or less knew of her background, and her stint at her own wedding where she disappeared mysteriously. The place he was staying at that night had a big event going on as well. And the woman who had barged into his room had a similar figure to Daisy Chen. She was a heiress as well, as stated by the people who were looking for her.

Moreover, she looked anything but natural. Her makeup, her facial features, although subtly, but they were altered to suit for a disguise.

’’Interesting,’’ Ryle pulled out his phone and dialled a number, ’’Investigate what Daisy Chen was doing on 16th July. I want every detail.’’ frёeωebɳovel.com

He disconnected the call and leaned back on the couch. The moment his eyes closed, his phone vibrated twice in his hand.

Ryle brought it close to his face and opened the text message.

’There have been some movements here in New York. He has brought a new mistress.’

Ryle’s eyes darkened.

He replied to the sender.

’Don’t bother me with it. What happens there has nothing to do with me.’

Ryle was about to put his phone down when another text popped up on the screen.

’Sooner or later, he is going to summon you back to the Harper Mansion. He has been mentioning you a lot in the past few days. You know he loves and it seems like he misses you greatly.’

As Ryle saw the text, the corner of his lips tugged up in scornful smile. Funny how people can ruin someone’s life in one blow and still claim that they did it for their own good. And it was more amazing when such people talk about things like love and affection.

The next morning, Harper Societies.

’’How are you feeling today?"

It just so happened to be the day when Daisy could no longer prolong her pretense of being sick. She had to come to work and the first thing she had to do was to be present at Ryle’s office.

To the man’s question, she took a pause before answering, ’’All thanks to your care.’’

Ryle’s lips twitched. He did not know what care was being mentioned right there unless it was blatant sarcasm. He cleared his throat, ’’You are a treasured asset to Harper Societies. Of course, seeing you in a bad condition bothers me to some extent. I went to your place to visit you yesterday but I was unable to follow through due to some reasons."

How could Daisy not know what reasons he was talking about? She thought working for two years for Ryle were going to pass in the blink of an eye but he had made it so tough at this point. She constantly had to be on her tiptoes around him. Yesterday, when she had gone out, the last thing she had expected was to encounter Ryle when she was not in her disguise.

Not only that, the man even somehow managed to draw connection of her to the disguise she had donned on her wedding day.

’’There is something I would like to request from you,’’ Daisy spoke up after a moment of contemplation.

"Oh? What is it?" Her solemn tone made Ryle look in her direction seriously.

’’I don’t want anyone from the company, including you, to visit me at my place. I appreciate your kind intentions but it’s an invasion of privacy to me.’’

Ryle looked at the man, amused, ’’When you used to work for me before, I have been to your place many times for work related matters. Don’t you think I need an explanation for your mysterious behaviour over the past few months?"

’’Our contract does not impose any such obligations on me. I would not like to talk about my private life.’’

’’Is it?" Ryle’s eyes darkened, ’’Very well, then. Let’s talk business. How are you connected to the heir of Lu Family of Beijing?"

Daisy paused briefly, ’’I share no such connections with him. I encountered him for the first time in the ball. Prior to that, we had never met and never have had any exchanges,’’ her words were half true. While they had never met before, she was indeed the fiancee of his younger brother.
