Chapter 266: Huria’s Outburst
Huria accepted the handshake but she could sense the animosity in the woman’s grip and the resentment in her gaze. Jenny was by no means pleased.
"It’s very nice to meet you, Jenny. I am Huria, head of the design department at your son’s company."
Regardless, Huria introduced herself politely. She would give her best to make this work, even if she had to charm this cunning fox who was about to become her mother-in-law.
"So how did all this start?" She asked, her tone light and yet there was this edge to it which Huria could sense.
Rais fisted his hand, his nails digging into his palm. He knew his mother was only acting sweet, inside she was brimming with plots of how to put Huria down.
Thankfully their food arrived and the conversation was interrupted. The server served it and Huria dug into her steak. Usually, she preferred to be casual when eating but today she knew two very sharp pairs of eyes were gawking at her every action.
Rais handed her the napkin which she gracefully spread on her legs and picked up her dinner fork and steak knife. Holding the neck of the fork with her left thumb and bent fingers she held the stake down and precisely cut a piece with her knife. Dipping it in cream sauce, Huria carefully placed it in her mouth and chewed slowly with her mouth closed.
Jenny was observing her every move as she stylishly cut into her own.
This was exhausting but Huria was no quitter. Jenny wanted a proper, decent and sophisticated woman for her son. Huria was going to pretend to be just that. She could be herself when they would be alone.
"So what are your qualifications, Huria?" Jenny asked, picking up a piece of carrot and slowly putting it in her mouth. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
"I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in fashion design and applied for a job soon after."
"She is exceptionally talented. Her designs are always top sellers for the company." Rais proudly informed his mother, his chest swelling with pride.
Jenny only slightly nodded before asking the next question.
"When are the two of you tying the knot? Or will I find that out through the media when they publish your picture as they did of that controversial couple? A gold digger and her gigolo. I heard you have been collaborating with him. It’s hilarious the kind of people that are rising to power these days."
Her callous and insulting words awakened the tigress side of Huria. She was trying to be nice and could bear any digs thrown her way but not her friends. That’s where she drew the line, no one was allowed to come for her best friend.
Rais had tried to keep his friendship and collaboration with Zyair under wraps from his mother. But there was only this much he could hide, such news always had a way to get out.
"I would appreciate it if you didn’t call my best friend a gold digger. Both of them have been through enough because of this rotten mindset of society. They are the most decent and courageous people I know, I wouldn’t tolerate any disrespect." Huria tightly clutched the fork in her hand as she fiercely stared back at Jenny.
A satisfied smile had found its way onto Jenny’s face, knowing she had found Huria’s weak spot.
"Mom? How can you talk about people without knowing them? Zyair is my associate and friend. He is one of the most capable and intelligent men I have come across in my life." Rais shook his head at his mom and placed the fork back on the plate, having lost his appetite.
"So now you have riff raffs as your friends? I bet it’s because of her." Jenny tilted her head at a very angry-looking Huria, "This is why I don’t approve of my boys choosing their own life partners. You people are too naive and end up mingling with the scum of society."
Huria was appalled at the choice of words by this so-called sophisticated lady.
"Scum? So anyone who doesn’t adhere to your societal norms is considered scum?" Huria questioned, the anger residing like fireballs in her eyes now.
Jenny gently placed her cutlery down, her perfectly manicured hands adorned with expensive rings now rested in her lap.
"I don’t sugar coat sweetie. I said what I said. No matter how you dress or how rich you get, trash will always be trash." She spoke unhurriedly, enunciating every word so Huria would understand how firm she was in her beliefs. She wouldn’t budge or waver from them.
Huria was seething by now, understanding what Rais had meant about his mother.
"Right. I forgot how privileged rich people always assume themselves to be. They think they can make the rules and everyone has to abide by them. Well, I wish the so-called rich could learn some compassion and decency as well because that’s completely lacking in their lives," Huria countered, her gaze not wavering from Jenny telling her that she was not intimidated in the slightest.
Jenny glared back at her, her mouth opened slightly at the audacity of this girl.
Rais could sense the tension rising, his mother had successfully triggered Huria and prolonging this conversation was only a recipe for disaster now. He had to step in because his mother would provoke Huria more.
"I think we will call this a night, seeing we have very different opinions on the matter. Let’s give it a rest and mom, please," he solemnly requested, pleading with his eyes.
"You and I will have words, Rais. I expect you to meet me tomorrow so we can discuss all this in detail." Jenny rolled her index finger towards both of them, indicating she was not going to drop the topic.
Huria wiped her hands with the napkin and placed it back on the table as she got up and said dryly.
"I wish I could say it was a pleasure to meet you but it wasn’t. But if you think berating my friends will have me running from your son. You don’t know me at all Mrs Lawlight. I came here wishing to meet you and have a good start to our relationship, I guess some people are not worth it." ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Jenny’s mouth opened and hit the floor and before she could answer back, Huria had stormed away from there, leaving her hanging.
