Chapter 265: Meeting Mrs Lawlight

Huria checked her costume for the third time in the mirror, ensuring she looked proper and decent. The black shift dress was both formal and had a proper neckline. A layer of pearls decorated her long neck.

Rais didn’t care what she wore but she wanted to make a good impression on his mother.

The sound of the car’s horn announced Rais’s arrival. Grabbing her purse, Huria rushed outside.

Rais was standing there in white slacks and a sky-blue dress shirt, with his car’s door open.

His brows arched seeing Huria’s dress and pearls around her neck. She never dressed like that and wasn’t a fan of pearls either. It was clear she was trying to make an effort to have his mother like her.

"Hey!" She happily chirruped like her usual self.

"Hey! My brightness." He grabbed her waist and placed a small kiss on her cheek, not wanting to smear her lipstick.

"Come, let’s head over." Rais helped her settle in the passenger seat and took the driving wheel. Soon they were off.

He drummed the steering wheel and his jaw was tight, nervousness flooded him and seeped into every cell he possessed as he drove closer to the restaurant where they were meeting his mom.

Huria lightly slapped his arm and jovially said, "Relax, she is going to love me." frёeωebɳovel.com

"You don’t know her like I do." Rais remained tense as his eyes remained on the road and traffic ahead. Huria kept rubbing his arm so he would relax.

Soon they parked outside the restaurant where they were having dinner with Mrs Lawlight. Stepping out Huria took Rais’s arm and they walked inside the posh-looking place where only the richest of the rich wined and dined.

Mrs Lawlight was already there, seated in a luxurious white sofa, she had this air of regality about her. Her crisp white blouse and cream pleated skirt were designed by the city’s finest. Her sharp eyes like that of a hawk were focused on Huria and she didn’t blink as they approached her.

Huria deduced that the woman was intimidating, to say the least, as they stepped closer. She put up a generous smile and was about to greet her when Mrs Lawlight turned her piercing gaze towards her son and sternly rebuked.

"You are late."

Rais let out a sigh and controlled himself, ignoring the words she had spoken and that too rather rudely. He spoke calmly and pointed towards Huria.

"Hello! Mom, may I introduce my fiancée."

The word seemed to have triggered Mrs Lawlight for her mouth opened like a lost duck’s and she blankly stared from an unsmiling Rais to an over-excited Huria. It was clear as the day that no one informed her of her son’s engagement.

Not him and not even her husband, who she was sure knew. Rais was close to him.

"What?" She asked, trying to keep her voice steady and not let it rise. But her elegantly interlocked fingers were clutched too tightly, making her knuckles stand out. She was barely holding herself from lashing out.

Rais quietly pushed back a chair opposite his mother and helped Huria sit down comfortably. He then proceeded to do the same and faced his mother, replying to her in a steady voice.

"Mom, I am getting married and she is the woman I chose to do so with."

She derisively snorted at him and then her judgemental eyes flickered to Huria.

How had she charmed her son? What was so special about her that her son went against his own mother?

"And you failed to inform me? Your own mother. I am thoroughly disappointed." Her eyes went back to her son, holding disapproval.

"Mrs Lawlight, I apologise, that’s why we are here today to make amends and ask for your blessings." Huria tried to explain, keeping a smile going. She could see Mrs Lawlight was not an easy woman to please.

"I am talking to my son, I would prefer a woman whom I don’t know won’t interfere," she spoke in an edgy voice that jabbed at Huria’s heart.

"Mom! I love and respect you but Huria is my fiancée, I won’t let you berate her for no reason at all. It was purely my decision, she didn’t even know of it until I proposed. So say whatever you want to but direct it towards me and not her," Rais placed his own interlaced hands on the table and said firmly. Letting his mother know he wouldn’t stand for her disrespect.

Huria was in awe, she had always fought her own battles but it felt nice to have a man who wanted to stand by her and not leave her at the mercy of his family. The respect for this man had multiplied in her heart.

"Then enlighten me with the reason why you kept such a big decision hidden from me. As your mother, I had a right to know. Didn’t I? I raised you better than this and yet you refused to involve me in the biggest decision of your life. Tell me how I shouldn’t be offended. I am seething Rais."

The waiter had arrived to take their order so the conversation was interrupted. Mrs Lawlight grabbed a glass of water and took small sips like the lady of class she was. Trying to cool her temper, it wasn’t very lady-like if she had to raise her voice. She would do it with class.

After Rais had placed his order he turned his attention back to his mother.

"I apologise, hurting you was not my intention but I had learnt from mine and my brothers’ past experiences that you never consider anyone good enough for us. You never made an effort to get along with the girls we chose and created rifts. Finn’s marriage almost fell apart because of your involvement. I don’t want that mom. I want a peaceful life with a girl of my choice."

He turned to face Huria, a smile mingled with pain etched there. Taking her hand in his, Rais intertwined his fingers with hers, he faced his mom again.

"She is my choice. Now it’s up to you if you want to make an effort to get to know her and be a good mother-in-law. Or you want to repeat what you always do. Like you have just done. The choice is yours."

The clear-cut answer Rais had given his mother didn’t sit well with her. Her cheeks burnt with anger and shame. The shame her son has brought her by speaking to her in this manner.

How dare he insult her in front of some low life girl he was screwing.

But she loved her sons too much. The very reason she never believed any girl was good enough for them. She knew she had to play her cards right and slowly she would remove this leech from her son’s side.

"Then let’s make a fresh start. I just want what’s best for my sons. So I will take this initiative." She extended her hand towards Huria, a very forced smile spread on her elegantly painted lips, the smile that refused to reach her cunning eyes.

"Call me, Jenny."
