Chapter 239: Leave Her

Skyla and Zyair thanked the couple for the delicious dinner and lovely night.

"Next time we will invite you guys over. We should do this more often," Zyair told Rais as they embraced each other before leaving.

"We would love to visit you guys." The girls waved at each other and said good night. freewebnovёl.ƈom

They sat in their car and Skyla took the steering wheel. Zyair took the passenger seat and off they went.

Instead of heading home, Skyla took a turn in the other direction.

"Where are we going?" Zyair asked amusedly, his eyes wavering outside.

"To your favourite spot." Skyla gripped the steering wheel hard and took another turn.

"Ah! It has been a while since we went there." Zyair reached out and turned the stereo on.

Hungry Hearts by Bruce Springsteen was playing.

Zyair began to quietly drum his fingers on his broad thigh while Skyla bobbed her head to the rhythm of the music.

Unaware to them a red sedan was on their trail.

As they drew near the sea, the salty breeze welcomed them invigorating their senses. Skyla parked the car in the parking lot and both of them exited it. Her auburn locks got caught up in the wind as Zyair drew close. She intertwined her arm with his while he placed some wandering locks behind her ear.

"Come, let’s go," he softly asked, holding so much love for her.

Both of them began to move towards the cliff where Zyair had brought her earlier.

The red sedan parked and a woman stepped out. She seemed to be in her early forties. From her silken beige attire to the pearls lining her neck, she seemed like someone from a rich family. But her face had several bruises which she hadn’t bothered covering.

She moved with sure steps, heading in the direction where Zyair and Skyla had gone. From a slight distance, she watched them, as Zyair had his arms around Skyla’s waist, his face was on her shoulder and both of them were facing the fierce sea below.

Drawing near she softly called out, "Calix."

Making both of them sharply turn and face her. While she couldn’t see Zyair’s face because of the mask, his eyes held this shock.

Skyla on the other hand began to scowl, seeing a strange woman approach them and call out her man. She couldn’t hold herself back.

"Have you been following us? Who are you? If you are a reporter or looking for cheap publicity, remember I will call the police." Skyla straightforwardly informed her. She didn’t wish for anyone to disturb their peace. People should leave them alone.

The woman paused, there was this disturbed look in her eyes which the couple didn’t like.

"I am not a reporter. I know Calix from The Mirage, used to be his regular. My life was in shambles and he was one good thing about it and now it has gone to hell since he disappeared. But I have found him again." There was this pain and obsession in her voice which Skyla detested, her eyes were constantly on Zyair, whose grip tightened around Skyla, making her speak again.

"Well he doesn’t work in Mirage anymore so I am not sure why you are here."

The woman scowled at Skyla’s answer, not liking how she kept speaking instead of Zyair.

"I want him to take the pain away like he used to. My husband is nothing but physically abusive and I hate him," she told them with tears shining in her eyes now.

The woman wouldn’t stop staring at Zyair with so much need, making him extremely uncomfortable. He didn’t wish to touch her so he decided to be straightforward with her.

"I am sorry for your afflictions but I don’t do that anymore. You should file for divorce or talk to the police about it," he told her as calmly as possible. He didn’t want to elicit some maddening behaviour from her. Such women were highly volatile, he knew that too well having dealt with the kind his whole life. And he remembered this one, she was delusional and screwed.

"Haw! You don’t remember me, Calix? I told you divorce was not an option for me. He will kill me." She tried to take a step towards him and extended her hand but Skyla was quick to wedge herself between them.

"You heard him. I am sorry about what you are going through because I have been there but he can’t provide what you seek. You need help and let the right people do that. My fiancé is himself a victim of this world’s cruelty. Please! Let him be."

Skyla kept her tone down but firm, no way was she letting this woman near him.

"Please! Calix. Can’t you see my bruises? You rescued her from her abusive husband. Help me too, I just want you. I have been searching for you for ten years," she desperately begged, clasping her hands together, tears streaming down her wounded face now.

This was such a difficult situation for them but they had to remain calm or it could escalate.

"I can understand your predicament but ..." Zyair began but the woman cut him off.

"If you won’t do it, I will jump from this cliff and end my life. I have reached the end of the line," she threateningly announced, taking a step towards the steep cliff where the winds howled and the sea raged down below. Her silken dress flapped all around her and her hair became dishevelled as she reached the edge.

Skyla panicked hearing her words but Zyair tried to remain calm and quietly whispered in her ear.

"I will distract her, you have to call the cops. Just trust me and remember I only love you." With those words, he let Skyla go and stepped away from her. Her heart tinged with so much pain but she had to trust her man.

Guilt crawled all over Zyair while Skyla hated people for manipulating him when he himself was a victim.

Knowing the craziness in that woman’s eyes he knew she would jump and he didn’t want that guilt.

"Please! Step away from the cliff, ma’am." Zyair carefully took a step towards her and extended his hand.

"Not until you promise to take care of me. I am not going back to my husband. You need to let her go." She pointed to Skyla with her bony finger and Zyair’s heart clenched as if someone had gripped it in an iron fist and squashed it. He would rather die than let the only brightness in his life go.

Zyair didn’t even want to think about what Skyla must be going through. He would have to apologise to her later but right now they had to get out of this mess.

"I promise, now give me your hand and step away from the cliff. Come, be a good girl." He forcefully smiled, giving her false reassurances. That’s what they had trained him to do, all his life.

As Skyla watched from a few steps away, her man embraced another woman. She turned away and called the police but a few tears fell out of her beautifully saddened eyes.
