Chapter 146: Nursery Rhymes
"That’s my girl. And I want you to keep practising the self-defence techniques I taught you. Can you do that?" Zyair asked, revelling in the touch of her smooth hands combing his hair.
"I will until you resume teaching me again." She bobbed her head in affirmation. Her heart easing, his hair were so silky to touch just as she had assumed them to be.
"Let’s drink to that," Zyair declared proudly and pointed to the other bag he had picked up earlier from the liquor store.
Skyla giggled and grabbed it. They were so getting drunk today. Opening it she extracted the bottle of expensive red wine he had brought.
She uncorked it and it came off with a small pop sound. Skyla brought the bottle to her lips and took a big swig out of it. The liquid jiggled inside the bottle as it tilted down her throat leaving a fruity lingering taste in her mouth.
"Ah! This is good stuff," she announced, removing the bottle from her lips and smiling down at the smirking man in her lap. Although she couldn’t see the smirk, she knew he was doing it.
"Well, it’s the night of your freedom, we have to celebrate." He winked at her encouraging her to drink more which she did, gladly.
"Here, drink with me." Skyla finally handed him the half-finished bottle and he unwillingly lifted his head from her lap.
"I will only take a few sips, I have to drive you back home." Zyair turned his back to her and slipped down his mask before taking two sips. Skyla placed her head on his back and sighed heavenly.
"I feel so relaxed as if all worries are gone."
"They are. Here, drink some more." Zyair handed the bottle back to Skyla over his shoulder. They went to and fro drinking and cracking jokes. Soon she was slightly drunk and laughing aloud at his jokes while thumping his back.
The wind picked up as the night descended into its late hours and she shivered from the cold. Zyair felt her shudder inside his body, he quickly took off his jacket and gently wrapped her in it.
His arms went around her pulling her into his embrace. He knew they should return soon but he had no strength to let her go. Seeing her snugly cuddled up in his strong arms he assumed she felt the same way.
"Zyair can you sing me a song?" She innocently asked and for the first he wished he had learnt how to sing. He had an ok voice but he had never sung for anyone.
"I can try if you want to laugh at my hoarse voice?" He amusedly told her.
"I wouldn’t dare, sing for me please." She used her fingers to lock her lips and threw away the imaginary key. Zyair threw his head back and laughed at her innocent action.
"Alright, here we go.
Star light, star bright,
The first star I see tonight;
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight."
Skyla focused her innocent eyes on him and blinked several times, forgetting the promise she had made. She burst out laughing in soft giggles rocking her body.
"What? You promised you wouldn’t laugh, you naughty girl." He caught hold of her cheek and pinched it lightly like he had always wanted to since his childhood.
"Ehhh!" She cried out in amusement mingling with embarrassment, "It’s a nursery rhyme that reminded me of my innocent days when my teacher used to sing it in her soft voice and then hearing it in your gruff manly voice. I couldn’t control myself," she confessed, rubbing her cheek. freēwebnovel.com
"Oops! I thought it was a song. I heard it in a cartoon and the beautiful lyrics stuck with me."
Zyair had never attended school like regular kids so he didn’t know about nursery rhymes. But he had a very sharp mind. During his childhood, there was a lady in his neighbourhood who taught kids reading and writing and Zyair learnt from her mostly.
It gave him a reason to stay away from his house and his wicked mother, she didn’t much care where he went as long as he was not her problem. Rest he learnt when he came of age but there were things he was still unaware of like most nursery rhymes. No one ever sang them to him.
The smile disappeared from Skyla’s face at his words. He had no clue this was a nursery rhyme meant he had never heard it in school. Did he even go to school?
"You went to school? Right?" She unsurely asked.
"Will you hate me if I said no?" He questioned staring deeply into her startled eyes. His voice laced with raw pain.
Skyla was flabbergasted at his question. She reached out and held his face in her hands before speaking.
"And why would I do that? You are far more intellectual, poised and kind than most who did. I can never hate you Zyair, don’t ask stupid questions," she slightly chided him, a cute frown covering her face, her eyes bunching together in annoyance.
Zyair brushed away a strand of hair which had flown to her face and grinned.
"Noted, my angry Lily."
She wondered about the kind of childhood he had. Skyla desperately wanted to ask him about it but considering his reaction the last time she did. The girl with red hair knew it was a painful topic. She didn’t wish to see him in pain.
"I will sing you all the nursery rhymes and you will tell me which one you like the most."
She cutely told him and his grin kept getting bigger and wider.
So on an edgy cliff, they sat, lost to space and time as she sang him all the nursery rhymes she knew in her melodic voice.
Zyair was lost in the magic of her voice, so beautiful and enthralling. The way she surely sang out the rhymes for him just because he had missed out on them made his heart all gooey.
Every last piece of defensive shards he held around it fell and disappeared. It brimmed with love and only love for this gorgeous woman in his arms whom he couldn’t wait any longer to own and claim.
He knew he was screwed because he had fallen hard for her.
"Thank you! Skyla, my precious Lily. These are adorable and your voice is so melodious. I can never get enough of it." He brought her closer and kissed her forehead showing how much he had loved hearing these.
"Really? I am so glad you liked them."
She was so tipsy but she was also delighted.
"Really. I will listen to more, promise you will sing those to me again."
"I promise," she cheerfully told him. He connected his forehead with her and said.
"You are the sweetest. I would love to stay like this forever but we have to go now before the sun rises. You need to rest and hopefully, he will sign the papers today and I will come for you soon."
Zyair held her tightly against himself, letting all of her essence soak inside of him. Her cheeks were as fiery as her hair now as she watched him with her half-hooded eyes and told him in her hushed voice.
"Zyair, I will wait for you."
