Chapter 140: The Hope He Gave

The journey back to Huria’s house from the lawyer was stressful. Skyla was too quiet as Huria held her, providing her with the emotional support she needed. Skyla was holding her teddy bear, hugging it tightly.

Why was being a woman so difficult in this world?

Why did she had to suffer for all the crimes of a man?

Zyair on the other hand was extremely irated at what Sylvia had said. Especially the part where she said he shouldn’t see or meet Skyla until the divorce was finalised.

How was he to live without seeing or talking to her for so many days?

Why was she to be blamed for her douche husband’s actions?

They arrived at Huria’s place and she took Skyla in. Zyair asked his trusted chauffeur, Ramiro to wait as he followed them inside.

Skyla had gone to the room while Huria was still in the foyer, arranging the shoes.

"I would like to see her before I leave," he hurriedly told Huria.

"Of course, she is inside," Huria informed him while putting away the shoes in the shoe rack.

He made haste and quickly reached the door, knocking on it fervently.

"Come in!" Her sad voice came from inside. Opening the door Zyair entered her room.

She was sitting on her bed with her back against the bed frame. Cuddles comfortably snuggled in her lap.

Zyair was getting jealous of the damn teddy bear with every passing second. How long would he have to wait before she would hold him like that?

"Are you alright? How are you holding up?" He brushed away his needy thoughts and unhurriedly asked while swiftly sitting down near her. Spreading his legs and entwining his hands.

Worries lined his forehead, and although Skyla had weighed out her words when talking to Sylvia, Zyair knew she had not even spoken about half of the things she had faced.

"I will be, eventually. Right now I am just afraid of the future, I don’t have good vibes coming from it," she told him the truth without sugarcoating what was disturbing her.

He weighed out her words. Silence prevailed for a few seconds before he spoke.

"I won’t lie to you Skyla by saying it will be easy. The world always needs a reason to throw stones but it’s up to us which side we show them, fragile like glass one which can easily be broken or a firm steely one so no one can crack or break."

He tilted his head towards her and continued.

"We will need to be stronger for what’s to come and no matter what anyone says I will be there for you. If not physically, I will be there emotionally, just like the one-winged angel. Your Calix will be there to protect you."

Her saddened face suddenly bloomed with a surprise smile. So he was also a believer in the one-winged angel. That explained the door handle of his officer door.

"You know about the One-winged angel?" She enthusiastically asked, her eyes brightened.

"I do, a little girl made me believe in him." He amusedly smiled under the mask wanting to see if she would remember.

"A little girl? Who? How?" She asked with a piqued interest, watching him with her intrigued eyes.

"You don’t remember, do you?" He lifted his hand and took out the chain around his neck, the angel pendant she had given him slipped out of underneath his shirt.

Zyair carefully took it off and clutching the chain dangled it in front of Skyla.

Her eyes took a few seconds to recognise her mother’s pendant and her grip loosened around Cuddles as the realisation hit her like a torpedo of memories. Memories that were precious to her because that was the day she had helped someone.

"Oh! God."

The truth, the past gobsmacked her right in the stomach as she kept blinking at him and the pendant as if it might disappear any time.

"Caeco? You are Caeco? You are also Calix...my brain, I...I don’t understand anymore." She frantically shook her head while Zyair slowly took her hand in his lowered the chained necklace on her palm and closed it with his warm one. He then lifted his reverent-filled eyes and faced her. She was still in shock.

"Sky! You gave me this pendant when I was about to enter the toughest times of my already shitty life. You gave me hope through a random act of kindness and I kept it alive and survived. Today I want to return that favour when you are about to enter a new phase of your life. You might feel like at times you are alone and your resolve might waver. But this will remind you to keep going because there is always light after the darkness."

His words normalised some of the shock she had been experiencing as she lowered her gaze and opened her palm to lovingly stare at her mother’s pendant.

22 years had passed and he had still kept it safe and near his heart.

"Thank you! Thank you so much for keeping it with you so safely. My heart is going to burst from the overwhelming emotions," Skyla choked out and pressed the pendant to her lips, kissing it.

It was so warm and was blanketed in his essence. All the worries and tiredness escaped her body in that instant as she leaned closer and placed her head on his shoulder in a heartwarming gesture.

Zyair let her be, he let her connect to her mom’s pendant and the meaning it held for her. Her thumb traced the shiny surface as she held it so lovingly.

"How long have you known?" She finally asked.

"Not very long Princess Lily," he knowingly teased in a bemused voice. Her ears turned scarlet at his words.

That was her childhood name, the name she had very proudly given herself. It seemed so cool to a seven-year-old and now it was just fucking embarrassing.

"Don’t tell me that’s the name I gave you at that time?" She facepalmed, embarrassment coursing through her very veins.

"That’s exactly what you did princess. And now I am going to be calling you that." His words held promises of a future where he was going to incessantly tease her.

"Please! Don’t," she requested but he only heartily chuckled.

Skyla was transported years back. She vaguely remembered the cute boy who sat by the pond and cried. All she remembered was he was sad and she wanted to help him. His laugh right now reminded her of that particular time and she wished she could remember more of his face. It was all a blur.

"Zyair?"

"Yes, my Lily," he promptly answered. So that’s why he had been calling her Lily. Now she was connecting the dots. And that’s how he knew about her favourite biscuit too.

"Why were you crying that day? You never told me, did you?"

She felt him go rigid as a log, her head was still on his shoulder, so felt the tremor his body concluded with.

Silence, a lot of silence followed her words.

He sat so stiffly that Skyla was afraid something was wrong. So she lifted her head and meekly gazed at him.

Her heart double-dived in despair for all she found in those gorgeous eyes was raw intense hurt and years of pain.

She couldn’t help but move forward and take his covered face in her slim hands. freewёbnoνel.com

His agonised eyes flickered at her and she drew in a sharp breath.

"Tell me, please."
