Chapter 139: Sylvia Hizar

Sylvia Hizar was a woman with a steely disposition and stern look which told the opposition.

’Don’t mess with me or else.’

At the age of 53, she had spent 20 years as a divorce lawyer and hardly ever lost a case. She was an ardent feminist and people labelled her as a misandrist, which she was not. She only had a strong derision for assholes who enjoyed destroying the lives of others.

Simply earning the reputation by attaining the fact that she only took up cases of women, never a man.

Yesterday night she received a call from her long-time friend and family lawyer of Kincaids, Mr Arman.

She was a tad surprised by the request but she would never say no to him so she agreed to meet Zyair and his secretary.

Who didn’t know the mysterious man who had enthralled the whole Angel City? The man who kept a low profile and his distance from women. Even a woman like Sylvia Hizar was slightly intrigued to meet him. It was not like every day Zyair Kincaid booked a divorce lawyer.

They arrived a little before noon and Sylvia welcomed them into her home office. Hands were shaken all around and introductions were made as everyone took their seats.

"Miss Sylvia, thank you for agreeing to meet us even on a Sunday," Zyair expressed his gratitude as he solemnly sat on the armchair, all business-like. There was no humour in his voice, showing a commanding presence. His face hidden under a dark mask leaving his bright eyes on display.

Sylvia’s slightly greying hair were in a tight bun and her work glasses rested on her nose as she scanned the three people who had come to meet her. But it was the girl with the red blouse and fire-kissed hair that held her attention.

The look she had on her face, Sylvia knew all too well.

Confused, dazed, nervous and out of place.

She was on the cusp of a breakdown but was trying to hold herself together.

"I would never say no to Arman. So how can I be of service?" She asked, her eyes slipping from Skyla to Zyair.

"My secretary, Miss Skyla, would like to file for a divorce from her husband," Zyair initiated the conversation and then paused, so Skyla could take the lead.

"I see. Miss Skyla, can you tell me in detail as to why you would like to get a divorce?"

Sylvia addressed the girl who was on the verge of panicking. She had no clue where to begin and what to even say.

"Take a deep breath, Skyla. You got this," Huria spoke calmly to her and rubbed her back in comfort.

"Start from your father’s company and then everything that has happened in the last nine years," Zyair guided her in his deep throaty voice.

She nodded and cleared her throat. Sylvia was ready with her diary and pen to jot down all the essential points.

Skyla inhaled deeply, filling her lungs with much-needed oxygen and let go of all the barriers holding her back. She folded her hands in her lap and began to tell her life story. Leaving nothing behind, hiding nothing away.

For once she had let go of the shyness and embraced this new turn her life was about to take.

The more she spoke, the more heartbroken Zyair became. But he sat quietly letting her speak and get this off her heart.

Sometimes she would pause, trying to battle the tears ready to let loose, other times she would sniffle and wipe her nose with a tissue Huria had given her.

Sylvia sat with a stoic face mostly, keeping her emotions in check. She needed to ask the right questions to get everything down. But inside her heart ached at the words of this beautiful but broken woman in front of her.

Knowing who her husband was now she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Doran had such an esteemed reputation in the city but something about that man had always rubbed Sylvia wrong and now she knew what it was.

She was also shown evidence of the abuse Skyla had endured for the tenure of her marriage. Sylvia saved it to be filed later.

"I just want my father’s company back along with divorce. I don’t want to claim any of his assets or money," Skyla flatly told Sylvia.

"Don’t worry Miss Skyla, with the amount of abuse he has inflicted over the years I am going to ensure we suck him dry. Leave everything to me to draw the divorce agreement and I will send you a copy. Once you approve I will forward it to him."

Sylvia had this malignant smile on her pink-painted lips. She was going to immensely enjoy this case.

"He will never sign them," Skyla told her the truth.

"Then we will meet him in court and that would be the beginning of his downfall because once I am done with him he would be praying to any gods he found that he had never crossed paths with me."

Her high cheekbones were set like steel showing she was not going to accept any non-sense attitude from Doran. Her lips slightly curled at the sides showing a menacing smile. freewebnσvel.cѳm

"I want this to be done as soon as possible and if it goes to court I want him exposed, fully and brutally. Show him no mercy. Also, I found footage of the day he took Miss Skyla to some secluded place and left her there. It’s from someone’s camera and I came to acquire it a few days ago. We can play that in court as evidence if it will come to that," this time it was Zyair who spoke, his words laced with disdain.

"Oh! I am not planning to. Believe me, when I say this, I will enjoy destroying him. He is the scum of the scum. And yes that footage will be a very solid proof." Sylvia cunningly answered while placing her pen down and facing a stunned Skyla, who didn’t know Zyair was still pursuing that.

"Meanwhile, I will recommend having a restraining order placed against him. I don’t want him contacting you or be anywhere near you while we go through this process," Sylvia recommended.

"I was thinking of doing that, don’t worry I will ensure that he doesn’t come anywhere near her." It was Zyair who answered instead of Skyla.

The possessiveness his voice carried told Sylvia that he deeply cared for his secretary. But his excessive involvement could weaken their case as well. It will provide the opposition with unnecessary ammunition.

"Yes, do that. Where is Miss Skyla staying for the time being?" Sylvia sharply observed both Skyla and Zyair. While the former was reluctant to answer and shyly watched the latter. He spoke up without any hesitancy.

"With me."

Sylvia sighed and placed both her hands, palms down on the desk and straightforwardly told them in plain words.

"That’s not a very good idea for her to stay with a man while she is going through divorce. It would reflect so negatively and will weaken our case. We don’t want that happening. Is there something going on between the two of you? You have to be transparent with me."

"No, no, nothing is going on," Skyla quickly shook her head seeming slightly frightened. freeweɓnovel.cøm

Zyair on the other hand was unperturbed and cooly replied.

"It shouldn’t be anyone’s business what goes on between me and Miss Skyla. But just to answer your question and satisfy your fears. We are not having an affair, I deeply respect her to taint her like that. Besides everyone knows I don’t touch women."

No way was he going to share with anyone what was between him and her. The world wouldn’t understand the sacred relationship they shared.

"It’s not but I think you would agree with me that we don’t want her reputation to be affected. I would suggest Miss Skyla stay somewhere else." Sylvia’s eyes floated from Skyla to Zyair.

She was experienced enough to know when someone was serious about the other person. The way Zyair was clutching the armrest and his eyes had this possessive intensity she knew he felt something deeply for her.

"She will stay with me from today onwards," Huria spoke, seeing the issue getting ahead of itself and Skyla’s discomfort at the situation.

"Good and I would recommend keeping minimum contact with each other. It would be for the best if she is excused from the office as well. The secretaries always get a bad rep sometimes for no reason at all. The world will need a reason to paint her as the bad guy in this even when it’s clearly a domestic violence case. Just because he is the sweetheart of Angel City, toppled by none other than the man who is backing his wife now. Be prepared ladies and gentlemen, this will be a bumpy ride."

Sylvia told them very smoothly but with a disturbed look.
