Chapter 103: Sword Dance

"I really hate you sometimes..." Mika muttered defeated.

[This is just for your best.]

Mika was currently trailing behind Sara and Yarjak, who were heading to the sparring grounds.

Based on what he had heard, that place was also specially created just for the tournament week.

There, guests or students could spar with each other.

Obviously, there were special instructors from the academy, who watched over them or gave them advice.

"Why the hell did the academy even offer a place to fight...?"

"I was told that some people got so fired up after watching a match that they immediately wanted to let loose, too. Thus, the academy built the sparring grounds so that the viewers can go and fight until they’re satisfied." Yarjak explained, catching Mika’s quiet words.

"Well, most of the time, it’s the people from Rostanta who seek this place." Sara added cheekily.

"Color me surprised..."

The moment he learned about that place, he knew immediately that a majority of the people, using that ground, must be from Rostanta, the nation where mightiness ruled.

"But I’m wondering why she isn’t there all the time." Mika said pensively.

"You mean big Sis?"

"Big Sis?"

"She means Olivia Rostanta. Sara has the habit of giving people, whom she’s fond of, nicknames." Yarjak elaborated.

"Anyways, she isn’t at the grounds because she doesn’t fight those clearly weaker than her. She only raises her fists if needed or if someone piqued her interest." he added.

"You can’t imagine how often we begged her to spar with us once!" Sara lamented.

"..."

Mika was averting his gaze suspiciously.

"H-hmm... I-is that so...?"

"Yes. Back then we were pretty confident in our skills, however, she made us change our minds."

"The match ended before we could even move an inch! She really doesn’t know how to hold back!"

"Can’t deny that..." Mika replied awkwardly.

"Hm? Did you also fight her, Mika?" Yarjak asked surprised.

"Oh, sh-"

"Wait, what? How did you convince her to fight you?"

"W-well..."

The two siblings leaned closer to him.

"Actually... She was the one who suggested a match..." he said quietly.

"!"

"HUH?!"

"Do you have a relic?"

"Are you actually super strong?"

"Wait, how did you even get to know her in the first place?"

Sara was bombarding Mika with questions, whereas he tried to calm her down as the people around them started to stare.

"I see..." Yarjak mumbled, wearing a smirk on his face.

The three then arrived at the sparring grounds.

The design was simple compared to the arena as the place was rectangular-shaped with thick walls out of earth surrounding the grounds.

In that place, there were currently only a small number of people sparring.

There were some students and also a few adults. Two instructors were supervising this place.

Mika stared at the orange sky.

"I guess most of them chose to go home for today." he said after thinking about why there were so few people here.

While Mika and Sara were gazing at the place, Yarjak was walking over to the weapon arsenal, which was located across the entrance.

As displaying lethal weapons was too dangerous, there were only wooden weapons.

Therefore, Yarjak picked up two wooden swords.

He turned around to the other two and threw one of the swords at Mika.

"At first, I planned just to watch you two sparring, however, I changed my mind. Thus, may I ask you for a spar, Mika?" Yarjak asked sternly while smiling.

"The moment I heard that Olivia asked you for a match, it piqued my interest in you even further. So please demonstrate to me the abilities that made even Olivia acknowledge you."

"..."

Mika gazed at the sword.

He sighed.

"Some things really don’t change, huh...?" he muttered as he stepped forward.

[The strong ones will always challenge those that are at least as strong as them. This is a necessity for the thing called growth.]

Mika pointed the sword at Yarjak.

"I accept your challenge." he stated sternly.

Behind him, Sara’s eyes were beaming with excitement.

Then, Mika and Yarjak were moving up to the middle, where they were noticed by one of the instructors.

"Are there any rules?"

"Everything is allowed." Yarjak answered as he held the sword with just one hand.

Meanwhile, Mika was holding his sword with both hands.

And then, Yarjak made his first move as he leaped towards Mika with his arm retracted.

He swung his sword with one hand horizontally, which Mika blocked.

However, Yarjak did not end it there.

In a zigzag-like manner, he kept slashing Mika.

Mika, in turn, tightened his grip as he continued blocking the attacks.

For now, he did not attack back as he still analyzed Yarjak’s style.

And when he found an opening, right after Yarjak tried to slash him horizontally again, Mika launched a horizontal slash as well.

"!"

But Yarjak evaded it in time by bending backward.

He pushed himself off the ground and kicked Mika in the chest.

"Keh..." Mika groaned slightly, stumbling a few steps to the back.

Yarjak did not give him the opportunity to take a breather, thus he jumped at Mika once more. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

In the air, he held his sword tightly with both hands this time and tried to strike Mika from above.

"Tch...!" Mika clicked his tongue as he negated the attack.

On the ground, Yarjak hunched down a little and rushed to Mika, preparing for a diagonal slash with his right hand and sword on the left side of his hip.

The swords clashed and the two pushed each sword to the other.

However, Mika noticed that Yarjak loosened up a bit.

"Wha-"

Yarjak flicked his left leg back and then, swiped Mika’s feet away with his left leg.

Mika was about to fall on his back when he realized that Yarjak was aiming to pierce Mika.

He held his sword on the hilt and on the blade with his hands, trying to block the attack.

With the thrust, Mika landed on the ground.

[It does not look good for you.]

Mika slapped Yarjak’s sword away with his own sword and rolled over to the side.

He stood up quickly and approached Yarjak instantly.

He, too, launched multiple wild slashes at him.

"..."

Compared to Mika, Yarjak had more trouble blocking or dodging those sword attacks.

It did not take long until he would slip up.

That was what Mika thought.

"!"

Water bubbles appeared around them.

Guessing that Yarjak was about to use magic, Mika jumped back.

However, that was a trap.

Yarjak used the confusion and came closer.

Catching him off guard, Yarjak hit Mika’s sword, causing it to fly to the back.

"That’s it."

Yarjak attempted another attack but Mika got away just in time and went for the sword.

[Turning your back on an opponent, huh?]

"Heh..." Mika huffed with a smirk.

As he went for the sword, Yarjak went after him.

His sword and arm were retracted, ready to launch another thrust.

When Mika got hold of the sword, Yarjak attacked.

But as he did, Mika spun on his heels and grabbed Yarjak’s hand at the same time.

Mika pushed Yarja’s hand and sword away from him while not letting go and raised his own sword.

And with a swift movement, he struck the sword down until the sword almost touched Yarjek’s shoulder.

"..."

Agape and impressed, Yarjak gazed at Mika.

"It’s my loss..." he admitted with a satisfied smile, loosening his body up.

Mika, too, loosened up and took a breath.

"That was close." he remarked exhausted.

"But it was a good match."

Yarjak stretched his hand toward Mika.

With a smile on his face, Mika shook it.

[Side quest completed.]

"However, why didn’t you use magic? I had the feeling that you still held back." Yarjak wondered.

"You said that everything was allowed but you hardly used any magic yourself."

"Heh, I see. So I lost without you even showing your abilities."

He turned his back on Mika.

"In Grat we value the art of weapons more than magic, therefore we rarely use magic attacks in fights aside from enhancing our bodies."

"So that’s why you’re great with the sword."

"Yes, one gets trained thoroughly in the art of a specific weapon as a child."

He walked to Sara.

"Be that as it may, I’m unfortunately not as skilled with a weapon as my other siblings."

"You got other siblings?"

"I have one younger brother, two older brothers, two younger sisters and one older sister."

"A-amazing..."

Mika could not relate at all as an only child.

"But why are you the crown prince then? I thought it was always the eldest son or daughter."

"Even though I may be the weakest in the whole family, I’m the most fit for diplomacy. And in her case..."

Yarjak stared down at the sleeping Sara with a gentle smile on his face.

"She earned the title of crown princess due to her prodigious swordsmanship. It’s a little bit embarrassing as I, the older brother, can’t even hold as much as a candle to her skills."

Mika tilted his head.

"In other words, she’s the strongest in the family."
