Chapter 127: Remnants of Poison II

I sniffled, my tears welling up at Nicole’s words as I recalled Blaise’s tender expressions as he gazed at me, and how eager he was to please me in bed. He was so vigorous, so healthy! To think every minute he spent with me was killing him inside, and we didn’t know it.

If I thought about it, it was Blaise’s love for me that led him to this state. I should have insisted on resting after the first round― hell, I should have dragged him to Nicole to begin with, just to get her to examine him again. Perhaps she would have caught the poison before it coursed through his system.

I realized that I wasn’t thinking realistically, and I was slowly descending into blaming myself for Blaise’s state, but what else could I do? Why was Blaise always suffering when he was me? I gingerly clutched at his hand, rubbing it carefully. The cold clammy feel of his skin was so unlike him that it caused my anxiety to spike.

Why was he so cold? Was he dying? Blaise’s body was warm, running on hot when we made love. Maybe that was his body fighting off the poison all this while. I fretted and tried to cover him up with the blanket, my own hands trembling with worry.

Nicole sensed my emotions and consoled me.

"Don’t blame yourself. It’s my fault for not detecting it earlier. It was the strength of your mate bond that kept Blaise fighting even as the poison coursed through him. He would have died if not for you," Nicole said firmly.

"He wouldn’t be in this state if not for me! In fact, he got injured trying to rescue me―"

In fact, the reason why he needed to rescue me was because I wanted so badly to go to him despite being nothing more than a burden. Damon had warned me, didn’t he? It turned out that he was right all along.

"Stop thinking nonsense," Damon scolded harshly, but the knock he gave to the back of my head was nothing but gentle, effectively interrupting my spiral of negative thoughts with his words and actions.

"The only people at fault aren’t people at all― they’re the fucking vampires who think they got the upper hand. But they won’t get away with this." Damon turned to Nicole and demanded, "Nicole, cut to the chase. How can we cure him? Surely you don’t expect my brother to live like a soulless vegetable for the rest of his life."

"No, no, of course not." Nicole gathered herself. "Beta Blaise can be cured, but only if we have the tools to get all the silver out. I can then administer the antidote for the poison afterward. Without removing the silver, we risk Beta Blaise developing a resistance to the antidote and dying from silver poisoning. Unfortunately, our pack doesn’t have such equipment or technology available for such a surgery," Nicole said apologetically.

Damon closed his eyes in quiet resignation. "So you’re saying, the only way to save Blaise is to get help from the humans?"

"Yes," Nicole said with a small nod. "We’ll need one of their magnetic resonance machines to help us detect metal fragments or something that can help us see through Blaise’s body, like a scope or an X-ray. A scope would be better since it’ll allow me to see as I operate on him."

"Even the nearest town, small as it is, should have such equipment in their clinics and hospitals. Since humans are a lot frailer than us, they tend to invest more in their medical facilities to make sure no one dies from something that most werewolves can heal from. "

I could admit that made a surprising amount of sense. Fangborne was a huge pack, but it was also a huge pack made out of skilled werewolf warriors who most likely could heal themselves from most injuries when given enough time to rest and food to eat. I had seen with my own two eyes how Elijah had healed from a severe beating. All Nicole had to do was encourage their bodies to heal, and their bodies would naturally do the rest.

Until today, when the vampires had finally decided to strike at Fangborne with poison and silver.

Damon clenched his jaw. "Fine. I’ll go to visit the humans in their town," Damon spat out the word human with slightly less venom than he said ’bloodsucker’, but only just. "I’ll get all of their equipment, and then some. I’m not going through this again."

"I’ll go with you," I offered, sensing his distress and dismay, no matter how much he tried to pretend it didn’t phase him. For some reason, Damon seemed to detest the very thought of dealing with humanity. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

As Blaise’s mate, there was no way I could do nothing when his life was in mortal peril. As Damon’s mate, I didn’t want him to go to a place that he didn’t want to without my support. As for myself, Harper Gray, I needed to go to the town to ask about my mother’s necklace.

No matter what, I definitely had to go to the human town.

"I’m a human, this is something I can do to help. It’s not like the issue with the borders," I said, trying to convince Damon to let me accompany him.

"It’s too dangerous," Damon said, shooting me down immediately. ƒrēewebnovel.com

"Damon, I’m going to a human town," I said, blinking in bemusement. "And I’m already a lot stronger and faster than most humans. If anything, they should be the ones worried about me. Let me go with you. They might be too scared of you, but they’ll talk to me."

"... Fine, but we’ll be back as soon as possible," Damon said, and I nodded in agreement.

We were there on a mission to save Blaise’s life, and we couldn’t afford to tarry. Who knew how long Nicole’s antidotes would wear off and cause Blaise to suffer unbearable pain?

"I’ll pack, and meet you in five minutes," I said, and Damon agreed, leaving the room to make his own preparations. Since we were going to a human town, I simply changed into a new pair of jeans, a clean blouse, and a pair of boots, along with a small sling bag that contained some water. Nicole pressed a wallet into my hands, and I opened it to find wads of cash stuffed inside.

"Nicole, I―"

"Take this, just in case," Nicole said, "You never know if you might need money in a human town. Whether it’s for food or for information, cash is needed."

"Thanks, Nicole," I said, squeezing her shoulders. "I’ll leave Blaise in your hands. Look after him for me."

Nicole nodded, her eyes wet with unshed tears.

"I will. Now go. Time is of the essence."
