Chapter 126: Remnants of Poison I

Damon had all but kicked down the door to Blaise’s room and I immediately leaped from his arms to join Blaise, who was nearly convulsing on the bed, a hand gripping his own chest as though he was trying to claw something out. His eyes, so full of love and tenderness for me mere minutes ago, were now bloodshot and bulging, a wordless scream for help in his pupils.

"Blaise!" Damon and I both yelled out.

I clutched at his face in worry and desperation while Damon hurriedly waved Nicole over to Blaise’s other side. I watched in horror as a dribble of frothy spit emerged from his lips. He seemed like he was having a seizure.

"Let me," Nicole said, "Harper, give me more room."

"But―" The pain in my chest was nearly killing me; how much could Blaise endure before his body gave out?

My eyes welled with tears as Damon wrapped his arms around my waist to pull me away.

"Move, we can’t do anything for him now," Damon growled into my ear.

Damon’s words sounded heartless, but I could feel the fear and turmoil churning in his heart. His hands gripped my waist so tightly it was almost painful. It felt like Damon was holding me as though I was his security blanket. As the alpha, he could not show any weakness to his pack members, regardless of circumstances― but no one could fault him if he crumbled. freewēbnoveℓ.com

Blaise was his twin brother, his one remaining blood family. If Blaise died, the only person who would be more devastated than me would be Damon. I felt Damon’s burgeoning despair that he tried so hard to conceal. Paired with the pain from Blaise’s wounds, I could only lean against Damon for support.

Nicole quickly sprung into action, Klaine right by her side― just in time for Blaise to start twitching and flailing, his limbs swinging uncontrollably. I gasped in shock; was Blaise possessed?

Klaine quickly pinned him down so that Nicole could get to work. She examined his eyes, nose, and lips, and listened to Blaise’s heartbeat. I could feel it going faster than a jackrabbit, nearly causing me to hyperventilate.

Nicole’s frown deepened, and she quickly jabbed him with several needles at certain points of Blaise’s body. Blaise seemed to inhale a sharp breath, before he deflated like a popped balloon against the bed, his eyes finally closing. Nicole then injected the contents of three syringes into Blaise, and I felt the pain finally recede. I could breathe clearly again.

Finally, Nicole heaved a sigh of relief, but there was still a look of worry in her eyes as she turned to look at the both of us. freewebnovel.cσ๓

"What happened, Nicole?" Damon was the first to break the silence, his voice hoarser than usual; as though he had spent the whole time internally screaming to himself. After I sensed the depth of his terror at losing Blaise, I would not doubt it for a second.

"First things first― the good news is that I have managed to stabilize the poison coursing through him. This will buy us some time for his body to recover from the ordeal while we get the cure."

"There’s poison inside him?" I shrieked out in surprise. I had detected nothing from Blaise when we shared our emotions. Was it hiding inside him all this while?

"Yes," Nicole’s face scrunched up and she gave Damon an apologetic look, before bowing deeply. "I’m so sorry, Alpha, I didn’t manage to detect it the first time around, which allowed it to lie dormant in Blaise’s body. This is my fault. I’ll take whatever punishment you deem fit."

Damon growled angrily, preparing to strike. He was furious at Nicole’s perceived incompetence and fraught with worry for Blaise. However, Klaine moved protectively towards Nicole, placing his hand on the small of her back in a show of support.

"Alpha Damon," I blinked in surprise as I finally heard Klaine speak, his voice gravelly and low, "I would gladly take Nicole’s punishment on my own body. Please, spare her."

It was heartwarming to know that even though Klaine respected and idolized Damon, he wasn’t going to let Damon go after his mate. If Nicole was to be punished, he would gladly be punished with her. I was happy that Nicole had found a good mate, but I needed more answers. Damon’s anger was coiling inside me like a snake waiting to strike, and I quickly tugged at his arm to distract him, trying to inject some calm.

"Damon, don’t do this, don’t hurt them. Curing Blaise’s condition is the priority," I reminded him. What was the use of fighting amongst ourselves and punishing Nicole and Klaine? They didn’t want this to happen any more than I did. If Damon had injured them, the only individuals that benefitted were the vampires that injured Blaise to begin with.

Damon sucked in a breath, and slowly but surely unclenched his hands.

"Fine. Nicole, get up," Damon growled out. "I’ll punish you if you don’t manage to cure him. Where did this poison even come from?"

Nicole hurriedly raised her head and wiped her wet eyes, before beginning to explain.

"I suspect this might be due to the silver residue embedded inside him," Nicole said. "We don’t have the tools to extract the smaller fragments completely, and I wouldn’t doubt the vampires to also lace them with minute traces of wolfsbane and wormwood. They would have simply coursed inside his bloodstream, eventually causing him to develop seizures and heart attacks."

"Then why did it not happen before? Why did it only happen after we―" My voice broke as I stared helplessly back down at Blaise’s resting figure.

Under the influence of whatever medication Nicole had jabbed him with, Blaise simply looked like he was asleep with a string of drool at his mouth if one ignored the various needles poking through his skin.

"Your activities caused his heart rate to rise, and his heart began pumping more of that poisoned blood throughout his body more quickly than before," Nicole said quietly. "The happier he was, the more excited he was with you, the faster his blood flowed."
