Chapter 128: Everhaven

I got into the car with Damon, giving him a quick once-over. He had also changed into a simple crew neck T-shirt, along with jeans and sandals to blend in with the humans. I have never seen him wear something as casual as exposed shoes― the sight of his actual toes in footwear caused me to take a second look out of sheer disbelief.

To my greater surprise, he handed me a mobile phone the moment I entered the car.

"You’re giving me a phone?" I asked, befuddled. I turned it around; it was a slim little thing, and it responded to my touch easily. The screen lit up and I scrolled through it in wonder.

Aubrey had something like this, despite not needing it all. She could contact any wolf in the pack with the pack link, but she still loved to spend hours chattering on the phone and taking pictures of herself. Of course, I wasn’t given such a luxury, despite actually needing it more.

"It’s not the latest model, but it’ll do since it’s on such short notice," Damon said, and I detected the faint note of apology in his voice. "It’ll help you blend in more with the humans. I have never heard of a human woman without this thing, so I got you one."

My lips lifted into a smile, and I hurriedly looked back down, hoping he did not see it. It was a very thoughtful gesture, and Damon had used that tiny amount of time to think of me. I clicked on the phone and I realized there was only a single number saved inside it.

"There’s only my number inside it," Damon explained as he started the vehicle.

I raised my head to stare at him with wide eyes. I didn’t realize he had a phone either.

Sensing my surprise, he rolled his eyes.

"I brought my phone too, just in case we need to communicate with actual words instead of emotions. Don’t want to scare off the humans by thinking we have telepathy," Damon said with a scowl. "It’s best if they don’t know what you are to me and Blaise."

"Understood," I said with a quick nod. "I’ll just pretend to be an ordinary human and poke around the town for information. May I know what your plan is for when we get to Everhaven?"

I doubted that anyone, human or not, would be eager to let go of medical equipment on such short notice when they themselves needed it.

"Are you going to give them money to buy their machines?" I wondered, looking over Damon. He didn’t look like he was carrying wads of cash. Hell, he didn’t even look like he had a wallet in those pants of his. frёewebnoѵēl.com

Damon scoffed. "Of course not. If they had any common sense, they should hand it over before I start throwing them to the vampires."

"Oh." Guess that’ll work too.

"Hold on tight," Damon said, and that was all the warning I got before his foot stepped on the accelerator and refused to leave it, causing me to squeal in surprise as I hurriedly grabbed at the handhold for dear life.

By car, Everhaven was a mere thirty-minute drive away, but with Damon driving like the devil was hot on his heels, we arrived in twenty minutes. I had no complaints about the bumpiness of our ride; the faster we got to the town, the faster we could save Blaise.

Yet, no matter how quickly Damon drove, night had fallen by the time we arrived in Everhaven. Damon parked the car on the outskirts of town, at a small parking lot most likely meant for visitors. I gaped; I couldn’t help but notice our car was the only one there.

There was only a tiny shelter from bad weather, and it looked one rainstorm away from collapsing on itself, with the beams being as rusted as it was. There was one flickering light, trying its best to illuminate the dark car park. Moths flitted underneath it, desperate for a source of light.

Well. With such a welcome, it was no wonder there were no visitors. Hopefully, the town was less run down than this, if not Blaise was doomed.

"Close your mouth, you’ll catch flies. Unless that’s what you’re into," Damon said boredly and he walked off, not even turning back to look at me. Once again, he managed to distract me from my negative thoughts.

I hurried after him, not wanting to be left behind in such a dreary, deserted place.

"I don’t fancy flies. Are you calling Blaise one? For shame. If he’s a fly, so are you, since you’re twins and all," I retorted as I followed Damon’s lead to the town. I could feel the muddy grass underneath my feet slowly but surely giving way to concrete pavements as we got closer to human civilization.

Damon only scoffed, but I sensed his reluctant amusement through the bond. "Try not to be so smart-mouthed around the humans. They might just beat you to death in some dark alley here."

"Like they can," I pointed out under my breath. Raising my voice, I asked, "Where are we going?"

"I’m going to Everhaven’s only hospital," Damon said simply, turning back to me with a raised eyebrow. "Why? Do you have plans to go anywhere else?"

"How could I have plans? I’ve never even been here," I said with a scowl. "I’ll go with you then."

"As expected," Damon rolled his eyes, and after a short ten-minute walk along the side of the road, we finally arrived at a building with a lighted red cross sign in front― or at least, what I assumed was a red cross.

Part of the sign wasn’t lit up at all. Next to it were the words ’Everhaven Community Hospital’, the letters decorated with rust.

My eyebrow twitched as I took in the building; it was only a small, three-story building with paint peeling off its walls. There were plastic chairs outside the building, presumably for patients to sit on. They were covered in dirt.

"This is the hospital?" I grabbed Damon by his shirt and whispered to him frantically. "Are you sure we’re not at the morgue?"
