Chapter 48: Chapter 28: She’s Willing to Bet That Shen Yanzhi Absolutely Likes Jiang Li

"Um... would it be okay for Qingbao to come over for a meal and maybe stay the night?"

Upon hearing Jiang Li’s question, Shen Yanzhi’s first instinct was to say no.

But considering Zhong Mufeng was Jiang Li’s best friend, and he would surely need her help in the future, he begrudgingly replied, "It’s fine."

"Is there anything she’d like to eat? I can make a couple more dishes."

Jiang Li had the phone on speaker, so Zhong Mufeng heard Shen Yanzhi loud and clear. She raised an eyebrow and asked, "If it’s not too much trouble, could you make some shredded pork in garlic sauce?"

"Sure."

Zhong Mufeng whispered to Jiang Li, "I didn’t realize your Shen was such a hidden gem."

Startled, Jiang Li scrambled to cover the mouthpiece. Realizing it was a pointless gesture, she just said, "We’re heading back now," and hung up.

Jiang Li shot Zhong Mufeng an irritated glare. "What’s with all this ’your Shen’ stuff? You can’t say that in front of him!"

Zhong Mufeng’s expression soured. "So what you’re saying is, I can’t call him ’your Shen’ to his face?"

Jiang Li stomped her foot. "Just... don’t call him that to his face, okay?"

Zhong Mufeng shrugged helplessly. "Alright, my little princess."

She walked to the passenger side and opened the door. Placing one hand on the roof of the car, she gestured with the other. "After you, Your Highness."

Jiang Li didn’t stand on ceremony, simply sliding gracefully into the passenger seat.

Zhong Mufeng walked around the front of the car to the driver’s side. She buckled up and started the engine in one smooth motion, then tossed her phone to Jiang Li. "Babe, you set up the GPS."

Jiang Li keyed in the villa’s address and set the phone on the mount the salesperson had given them. She yawned. "I’m going to close my eyes for a bit. Just wake me when we get there."

Zhong Mufeng rolled her eyes. "Seriously? You have that much faith in my driving?"

Jiang Li grinned, raising an eyebrow. "I have faith in you!"

She gave Zhong Mufeng a thumbs-up. "Go, Pika-Zhong! You can do it!"

Zhong Mufeng deadpanned, "Just go to sleep. If you say one more word, I might actually strangle you."

Jiang Li was tempted to push her buttons again, but considering Zhong Mufeng was behind the wheel, she decided her personal safety was more important. It wasn’t a hill worth dying on.

She adjusted her seat, closed her eyes, and cleared her mind. In no time at all, she was fast asleep.

When she opened her eyes again, she saw the familiar surroundings of their neighborhood. She stretched lazily. "Wow, I woke up just as we got home."

Hearing Jiang Li’s voice, Zhong Mufeng turned the music up slightly. "When did you move? You didn’t say a word about it."

Jiang Li rubbed the tip of her nose. "Remember I told you we were going to buy a house for the wedding? Well, we bought it and moved in on the same day."

’She’d been so caught up the past couple of days that she’d completely lost track of the world, and had totally forgotten about Zhong Mufeng.’

’Heck, never mind Zhong Mufeng. If it weren’t for the System, she probably would have forgotten her own parents.’

Zhong Mufeng clicked her tongue. "TSK TSK. Such blissful newlyweds. Couldn’t wait a single second, could you?"

Jiang Li turned to stare out the window, letting the darkness hide her blush. "You got a problem with it? Then go find someone for yourself."

Zhong Mufeng pouted. "Men only slow down my money-making."

’She’d already seen Jiang Li go through the whole dating thing once, and she felt that kind of life wasn’t for her.’

’Instead of spending all that money on a boyfriend, wouldn’t it be better to buy your own clothes, snacks, and go on vacation?’

’And that was without even living together.’

’If they actually moved in together, she’d have to act like his mother, taking care of his every need.’

’So yeah, dating wasn’t really her thing.’

’She hated hassles and was obsessed with money.’

As they neared their destination, it finally dawned on Zhong Mufeng. "Holy crap, you bought a villa?"

Jiang Li dodged the question. "Don’t worry, we saved a room for you."

Zhong Mufeng smacked her lips. "Do I look like I’m short on rooms?"

She answered her own question. "No, what I’m short on is a villa!"

This time, Jiang Li didn’t offer to buy her one. "Then earn the money to buy it yourself."

If she really offered to buy her one, Zhong Mufeng probably wouldn’t dare to accept it.

Zhong Mufeng laughed self-deprecatingly. "With the peanuts I earn? It would take me several lifetimes to save up enough for a villa."

Jiang Li raised an eyebrow. "Simple. Just find a rich man. Problem solved."

Zhong Mufeng scoffed. "I’d have better luck pinning my hopes on you than on some man."

Then she remembered the apartment Jiang Li had bought for her that day and spoke up again. "They say you can’t rely on anyone but yourself. Besides, I already have an apartment. What do I need a villa for?"
