Chapter 7: Bottom Of The Ladder

"You foolish girl!!" The elderly woman yelled, rapidly approaching Loraine with fury burning from her irises.

Loraine recoiled slightly from how loud the woman yelled, a chill running down her spine as she braced herself for the scolding she was about to endure.

"Do you know how much danger you’ve put us in!? You could’ve gotten us all killed because of your foolish outburst, we could’ve been executed!" The head maid yelled, a bright sapphire glow emanating from her hand as a broom appeared in her hand, causing Loraine’s eyes to widen.

’Magic!?’ Loraine thought with shock evident on her face, before a sharp whack was delivered to her head, causing her to shield herself from the head maid who started to beat down on her.

Whack!

"Ouch!" A surprised cry of pain left Loraine’s lips, her body surging from adrenaline, realizing that she was in more danger than she had earlier anticipated.

The system window popped up beside her as she recoiled from the initial attack, a sharp burn lingering on her skin as she barely managed to block the broom’s swing. She stared at the notification, which showed her how much health she had lost.

’Notifications? Right now? How much health do I even have?’ Loraine thought, too lost in her train of thought to defend against another strike.

"For the past 3 days, you’ve gone ahead and made my life even harder!" The head maid said, whacking Loraine with the broom, her attacks surprisingly tough to endure as Loraine was getting more hurt than she thought she would, some small bruises forming on her arms.

"You useless, useless girl!"

"Ow! Ow! Ow! I’m sorry!" Loraine said, gritting her teeth as she tried to dodge a swing from the head maid, narrowly sidestepping the attack, the hairs of the broom barely missing her face by inches.

’Is she trying to kill me!?’ She thought, adrenaline surging in her veins. Too bad for her however, she was too slow to notice another swing from the head maid, successfully landing a hit on her that knocked her onto the floor.

"You should never, ever, ever! Speak to Young Master Valmont, or anyone of such importance, like that ever again!" She said, continuing to whack Loraine more and more, her attacks getting fiercer and more powerful the more she yelled, her rage fueling her drive to punish this foolish girl that could’ve resulted in her demise.

"Ha...ha...ha..." The head maid panted, using the broom to hold herself up, her stamina at her limit.

Loraine’s breaths came in short burst as well, glancing at the system notification to find out that her health had dropped below half.

’It’s only my first day and I’ve already gone through so much, you’ve got to be kidding me...’ She thought, glancing at the head maid who was still fiercely glaring at her. Loraine knew that her time here wouldn’t be easy, in fact, she already made it far worse by talking back to the young master.

Why you may ask? Well it was simple, the previous Loraine was standing up for her friend, and that led to Loraine getting killed and Misha taking over.

She couldn’t recall her well from her fragmented memories of Loraine’s past, but from what she could piece together, the young master was actively harassing her friend and when Loraine found out, she was practically furious and confronted him inside the hall, drawing the attention of everyone and wanting justice to be served for her mistreatment.

But because she was a failed awakener, nobody rallied along side her and stood by her claim, instead choosing to remain quiet and not say, or do anything in order to protect themselves and not be involved with Loraine, her attempt at serving justice backfiring and ultimately resulting in her death.

’Alright Misha....improvise.’ Loraine thought to herself, trying to push herself up from the ground despite the pain in her body.

"Tch! Stay down!" The head maid commanded, throwing the broom at Loraine and knocking her back down to the ground again. "Let this be a reminder of where you stand in this household, your duty is to serve and only serve, you don’t have a say here. You should know that by now." The head maid said, clicking her tongue as she turned to leave, walking towards the door.

"Oh, and Loraine," The head maid said, her hand on the handle as she turned to look at the bruised girl one more time. "Starting today, all your chores and duties will be doubled. Consider this punishment for almost costing us our lives, and repayment for me purchasing you that expensive potion." She said coldly, unlocking the door and stepping out into the hall.

The door clicking shut behind her, leaving Loraine to ponder what she just went through.

"Damn it...this is already worse than my 14 hour job." Loraine muttered weakly, falling onto her back as she gazed up at the ceiling. She knew that this world would be dangerous, but she didn’t even take into account that her own surroundings could be dangerous too.

The maids had a hierarchy of their own, with the head maid ruling over everyone else. Not only was the head maid often the one with the rarest profession among the rest, but she also managed the funds and payment distributions everyone would gain as per their paycheck.

Loraine got little to no payment for her services, as she wasn’t deemed worthy of much more due to her unawakened status, and because she had been raised in this household ever since she was a child, so there wasn’t any real reason to pay her as she was basically living here.

’I need to keep my awakening a secret for now, if Margret were to find out that I have the highest maid class, she would probably try to kill me and it could cause even more complications down the road later on.’ She strategized, pushing herself off the ground and finally standing up to her feet, dusting herself off with her hands.

’Corrupt noble family, cruel maid hierarchy, and a unawakened slave at the bottom of it all.’ Loraine thought, picking up the broom Margret left behind.

"Now that I’m finally alone again, I should try and actually see my status." She said to herself, calling out to the status screen in her mind, the system screen finally appearing before her.

’Hmm...this is...decent. Everything besides my intelligence needs work, but I guess this is okay since I’m still at level 1.’ Loraine thought, reviewing her stats and abilities.

’If I want to survive In this place, the most logical step would be to get stronger, but in ultimately doing so, I could blow my cover. Heck, I doubt I’ll even be able to leave this place without permission, not that Margret would give me that after what happened.’ Loraine thought with a sigh, turning around and making her way towards her bed. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

’If I get the chance I should probably try my skills out as well and see what I can do with them.’

She placed the broom against the wall and opened up the curtains to her room, the sun reflecting on her face and illuminating the whole room. Her eyes widened as she gazed out into the massive mansion courtyard, the large walls made of fancy marble, the ground a lush and sacred grass field, filled with plants and flowers, and a beautiful garden to accompany it all.

"It’s beautiful..." Loraine muttered, utterly mesmerized by the beautiful sight. She couldn’t help but be at awe by the work of art she was seeing, it was like being in a fancy portrait, but everything with everything else glowing brighter and brimming with life.

"Even though my start in this world had been rough, I won’t let it best me and put me down for much longer." Loraine said, her gaze hardening with a determination she hadn’t felt in a long time, a small smile tugging at her lips as she was started to feel somewhat excited.

"Alright, enough standing around, its time to adap-!"
