Chapter 15: Unseen Suffering
The soft golden rays of sunset pierced through the blinds of a darkened room, the room full of dust, grime, and signs of age that hadn’t been well kept for a rather long time.
"It hurts..." A soft, whisper came from a woman on the bed.
Pain, a visceral heat that scorched her skin like a molten blanket of fire. Her eyes were glued to the ceiling, the orbs of life staring at the roof of a rundown household almost aimlessly, her mind a whirlwind of emotions.
"It hurts..." She muttered, her voice a raspy whisper as she glanced at her body, a scene straight of a nightmare surrounding her entire being. Countless thin-thread like strings protruded out of her body, dripping with the remnants of her blood as she laid onto the plush mattress, the once warm mattress of her own home now a prison she was kept in. frёeωebɳovel.com
And the place she would inevitably die in.
"Make it stop....I need....must..." She struggled to barely breathe, her chest falling and sinking with every breath as she barely muster the strength to even move a muscle, her body malnourished and her once pale skin barely a shed of her former glory.
’Is this how I’m going to die....?’ She muttered, wondering how long she was going to be able to hold on.
The door to her room creaked open, her eyes widening in fear as a tall figure wearing a long cloak emerged closer, holding onto a crimson orb that pulsed ominously, a malicious grin etched onto their face.
"S....stay back!"
...
Back at Loraine.....
[Ding! You Have Received An Item: (Uncommon)Medical Recovery Kit!]
[Item: Medical Recovery Kit]
[Rarity: Uncommon]
[Effect: Restores 40 Points Of Health Upon A Single Use, Can Be Used A Total Of Three Times]
[Description: A Simple First Aid Kit With Bandages, Medicine, And Other Necessities To Treat Wounds And Injury.]
The system explained the Items effects and description, a small excited smile playing out on Loraine’s lips as she held the [Medical Recovery Kit] in her hands. It looked far less modern than the ones you could find at hospitals, there was no fancy cover or label, just a decently sized white box with all kinds of stuff in it.
"Oh, not bad, and I can use it three times too?" Loraine nodded approvingly, although she wasn’t sure what could cause her to use this in the future, she knew that with the looming threat of her sister maids on her back, a recovery item would surely come in handy.
’In case I do get my ass handed to me by one of these people, a recovery item would definetly come in handy. Although....that might raise suspicions as well, so I’m gonna have to be careful and not risk recovering too early.’ She thought, her mind already thinking far into the future.
"Now then, let’s see what this fancy piece of jewelry can do." Loraine said, holding up a small golden ring that shone a bit brighter than she had anticipated, a small frown appearing on her face as she didn’t like how easily it shone like that.
[Ding! You Have Received An Accessory: (Common)Ring Of Steady Endurance!]
[Item: Ring Of Steady Endurance]
[Rarity: Common]
[Effect: Increases The Wearer’s Ability To Reduce Damage Received By 5%]
[Description: A Ring Of Gold And Silver, It Carries A Magical Enchantment Meant To Protect The User, But Its Effects Aren’t That Powerful.]
"5% Can go a long way, so even if its not much, I’ll gladly take it." Loraine slipped the ring onto her finger, a magical sensation washing down her body the moment she equipped the ring, a feeling of hardening coursing her skin, but it felt almost pleasant in a way.
’I feel tougher, though not by a whole lot. Still, could be very useful.’ She smiled, sprawling her hand out as she glanced at the fancy ring on her finger, taking it into mind that it could also be sold if it were actually made of real gold, so that too could be an extra method of earning money.
"Though knowing my luck, I could get my funds stolen too if I’m not careful, or this ring could get snatched right off my fingers." She sighed, "I just hope I don’t have to lose these things as the consequences of trying to do my job...clean."
She shook her head, she was being too harsh on herself, she needed to be optimistic and look at what else she had received, focusing on the negative was only gonna put her in a bad mood and distract her.
[Item: Stamina Reinforcement Potion]
[Rarity: Rare]
[Effect: Strengthens The Consumers Stamina By 50% For 10 Minutes]
[Description: A Powerful Alchemical Concoction Made By Blending Magical Herbs And A Few Some Monster Residue, To Prolong The User’s Ability To Stay Active In Battle, It Is Said To Be Quite Expensive As Its Ingredients Are Rare To Come By.]
’Woah...’ Loraine’s eyes were wide with intrigue and sheer amazement, its effects were ridiculous, only downside was that it lasted for a limited time and she didn’t really have any use for such a rare item at the moment.
"While 50% is a huge increase, It would be wasted if I used it for any maid activities. Since I don’t have any resources, It could become a great asset if I were to perhaps sell it later." She murmured to herself, though she wondered just how much stuff like these were sold for?
Outside of Loraine’s memories, which contained little to no information about such things, she had absolutely no idea of how much these things were meant to be.
’Education is only reserved for those that contribute....these devils didn’t even allow the poor girl to fucking read a book!’ Loraine greeted her teeth in pure annoyance, how inconvenient.
Great, another obstacle added to her list of towering problems.
"Sigh...damn it. Guess I not only have to worry about the Skill Book, but about my education too, I just hope I get access to a Skill that allows me to sponge up information without much effort." She turned her attention back to all the items before her.
’Only problem is...where do I hide all this stuff?’ Loraine sighed, her shoulders slumping forward as she realized that her system didn’t have a storage function, at least not inherently.
"Guess I wasn’t lucky enough to inherit that kind of system." She said with a slight scoff, rolling her eyes as she looked at the Items all piled up on the floor. "But then again, that seems to be a trait I’ve come to pick up."
Loraine said, glancing at her bed as she knelt down and lifted up the bed’s mattress, shoving the [Medical Recovery Kit] underneath to hide it, as it was probably the safest and least suspected area.
She walked over to her drawers and slid the [Stamina Reinforcement Potion] into one of them, burying it with her clothing to cover up the Rare Item.
"Lastly...." Loraine glanced at the final Item she managed to receive from today’s Daily Quest, the blade’s clean surface reflecting her face, the Item making her a bit worried.
