Chapter 13: Magical Grasp
Loraine jumped upon hearing the voice behind her, instantly recognizing it to be another maid. Her hands reacted quickly, shutting the book before she could notice and spinning around to face the maid in question.
"Oh! Hey...uhh...I was just cleaning the study is all." She said with an awkward smile on her face, a small flustered laugh escaping her lips. She was surprised to see that it wasn’t Alice or Margret that had caught her, but another maid she knew also wanted her dead, but compared to the first two options, she would rather deal with this one.
’Beatrice...’ She thought, studying the girl more closely. She had long, flaming red hair, a pair of glasses resting on the bridge of her nose, possessing a sweet face kissed with freckles. But she knew that she was anything but sweet.
’Did she see anything? Am I caught?’ She thought inwardly, her mind already anticipating the worst outcomes.
"I can see that, but I’m more interested in what you were doing with the young master’s books...you weren’t reading them were you? You know that could get you in real trouble if I were to report this." She said with a almost smug smile on her face, a dangerous glint in her eye.
’Are you serious!?’ Loraine cursed inwardly, just how unlucky was she. ’I should’ve paid more attention to my surroundings, I didn’t even hear her entering the room!’ She facepalmed inwardly, but she needed to regain her composure and act quickly.
"I wasn’t reading these books, I was merely analyzing them to see if they had suffered any damage as I had accidentally knocked them over." Loraine responded, her tone taking on a more calm and composed shift that made Beatrice blink in confusion.
’Did...her tone just change? She sounded almost...different?’ Beatrice raised a brow, a look of visible confusion on her face.
’Crap, I broke character for a second! I acted like my real self for a moment, I need to regain control of the situation quickly.’
"Tsk, can you ever do something properly?" Beatrice clicked her tongue in annoyance, her tone harsh and condescending.
"Ahem," Loraine cleared her throat, her face taking on a more carefree and light hearted expression as she smiled brightly, quickly bowing her head to apologize.
"I’m sorry if I spoke out of line, Miss Beatrice, ever since my injury, I haven’t been feeling the same so its been a lot harder to complete simple tasks." She quickly told a lie on the spot, hoping that Beatrice would buy it.
Beatrice’s eyes widened briefly, recounting back to the rumors surrounding Loraine, and the brutal aftermath that ended with a life-threatening injury that had almost killed the poor girl. A small smile bloomed on her lips at the thought, she wished that she could’ve seen it happen in person.
"Hmph," Beatrice scoffed, waving her hand dismissively as she turned around to leave. "Whatever, just make sure to clean this place properly and try not to break anything while you’re at it." She said, leaving Loraine behind in the study and closing the door behind her.
Loraine stared at the door for a few seconds, the adrenaline from the tense situation leaving her body as she sighed, nearly falling to the ground.
’This sucks even more than my jobs damn HR department, not only can I possibly lose my job here, but I may as well lose my life in the process.’ Loraine thought, glancing back at the Skill Book in her hands.
"I’m gonna have to come back for you later." She muttered, disappointed at her predicament. She wanted to look into the book and study its contents, as Skill Books in this world held magical knowledge that allowed an Awakener to learn a Skill as long as they somewhat aligned with your Class.
’From what I recall, you can’t learn Skills that don’t align with your Class, but there are some Skills that can be learned regardless of what class you have.’
Skills could also be learned through natural methods, for example, Mage classes could often learn a variety of spells through natural education from the hands of an experienced tutor, practice, theory, or Skill Books.
Making them one of the most sought out classes for their sheer versatility, as any Skill requiring the use of the theory of magic could practically be learned by Mages.
Only problem was that it came down to luck, and Mages started in the Rare category of Classes, so they were very rare to come by, but were often greatly valued.
’Now that I think about it, if I were a mage things could’ve been way different than it is now.’ She sighed.
With great haste, Loraine used [Cleanse] on the fallen books, getting rid of any dust and rendering them as good as new, sliding each book into their respective place and leaving only the Skill Book in her hand left in her hand.
All she had to do was get this book back in its place and proceed to clean up the entire study, but the problem was, this books original place came from way up the shelf, and she had no way of reaching it there at the moment.
"I could use a ladder, but...." She glanced at her hands, remembering another Skill she had in her possession that she wanted to try out, [Magical Grasp].

’Telekinesis? TELEKENISIS?’ Loraine’s mind practically exploded from shock and awe at the revelation, her eyes wide as she stared at the description of the Skill. freewёbnoνel.com
’Since when was an ability as overpowered as Telekinesis a maid skill!? Well...its not REALLY, Telekinesis, just an imitation of it, but still!’ Loraine thought, initially, Loraine had been wondering just how she could survive in this hell of a noble household.
But if she had a Skill as versatile as [Magical Grasp], which was made even more powerful with the boosting properties of [Mystic Amplification], then perhaps she had a bigger shot than she had initially thought possible.
’This...changes everything.’
