Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Should I Leave the Door Unlocked for You Tonight?
’Later, I’ll have to teach this old man how to keep up with the times.’
When she got off work that evening, Jared Thorne called and asked her to come home.
He didn’t specify why over the phone, but Jared Thorne’s tone was very pleasant, which probably meant there were guests with him.
Georgia agreed, telling him she was still busy with work. Jared didn’t press her and hung up.
After hanging up, Georgia got back to her work.
Because Justin Sullivan had requested a day off for her, she’d already lost her perfect attendance bonus for the month. Her paycheck was going to be over five hundred yuan lighter, and Georgia could practically feel the flesh being carved from her bones.
After work, on her way home, Georgia called Nancy Hughes to tell her she wouldn’t be back for dinner that evening.
Nancy was probably sneaking a break from work. She held the phone and said with a sly grin, "So, are you coming home at all tonight? Should I leave the door unlocked for you?"
The hidden meaning in her words was perfectly clear.
Georgia chided her good-naturedly. "Nancy, I’m going back to the Thorne residence tonight!"
Nancy scoffed. How boring.
’And here I thought she was going to our big boss’s house!’
Nancy chatted for another moment before her sharp eyes spotted her supervisor coming out of the office. She lowered her head and whispered, "Gotta go, my boss is coming out!"
She hung up and randomly clicked open one of her design drafts, pretending to be hard at work.
Only after her boss had made his rounds and moved on did she relax.
’If my boss knew my roommate was dating the big boss, would he start sucking up to me?’
’Georgia dating Elliot Sheridan was the best decision ever. Even I’m benefiting from it!’
The bus was crowded, and Georgia carefully protected her phone.
His secretary had probably picked it out for him. It was a standard men’s phone with no extra apps installed.
When she arrived at the house, the sun was slowly setting, painting the clouds at the horizon like a watercolor gradient.
In the courtyard, she saw one of Justin Sullivan’s cars parked with the engine off.
As Georgia entered the house, she was greeted by the aroma of a home-cooked meal.
Hayley Sullivan was currently trying every trick in the book to curry favor with her younger brother, so his visit naturally called for a grand reception.
She didn’t see Justin Sullivan in the living room, which felt a little strange.
She called out, "Dad," and went upstairs.
Her room was the first one around the corner at the top of the stairs.
Amanda Thorne’s room was diagonally across from hers, and the door seemed to be ajar, leaving a small crack.
SMASH! The distinct sound of breaking glass came from her room.
’What’s set the great miss off this time?’
Amanda Thorne had a terrible temper. Hayley Sullivan had doted on her since she was a child, spoiling her rotten and letting her have her way in everything.
This habit of smashing things when she was angry had been cultivated since childhood.
’If I ever have a daughter, I’d treasure her too, but definitely not like Hayley Sullivan does.’
’Spoiled into malice.’
"What? You couldn’t do the one thing I asked, you got caught red-handed and beaten up, and now you have the nerve to ask me for money?!" Amanda’s furious voice carried out. "Let me tell you, no way! I’m not giving you a single cent until you find out who that woman is!"
Georgia hadn’t intended to eavesdrop on Amanda’s phone call, but she couldn’t help but overhear that last sentence.
Her fingers, resting on her doorknob, went rigid. ’Who is the woman Amanda’s investigating?’
Her first instinct was that it had to be her.
For the past three years, Amanda had spent almost all her time obsessed with one man: Elliot Sheridan. The woman she wanted to unmask had to be the one by his side.
A sudden panic seized her. ’If Amanda finds out that the woman with Elliot is me, what will she do?’
Before Amanda could notice her, she pushed open her door and slipped into her room.
Looking at Elliot’s phone, she suddenly had the urge to hide it.
When it was time for dinner, Georgia left her room and ran right into Amanda, who was also heading out.
The latter gave her a cold, sidelong glance and sneered, "Georgia, I hear you’ve been doing pretty well for yourself lately?"
Georgia’s heart skipped a beat. She knew whatever Amanda said next wouldn’t be pleasant, but she still replied, "I’m doing okay."
"I heard you landed the Lennox Group contract. Quite the accomplishment. Your future is limitless!"
A common trait among women is jealousy.
Even though she considered Georgia beneath her, Amanda couldn’t stand to see her succeed.
Amanda coquettishly twirled a strand of her long hair and smiled contemptuously. "I heard Zane Lennox himself personally signed that contract. So tell me, what did you have to do to win him over?"
The insinuation in Amanda’s words was so obvious that it was impossible for Georgia to pretend she didn’t understand.
"Amanda, I know what you’re implying, but let me tell you, I didn’t sleep with Zane Lennox. I got that contract based on my own abilities. If you don’t believe me, you can go ask him yourself!"
"Oh, Georgia, don’t be so modest. You’re so young, yet such a flirt. First, you shamelessly threw yourself at Justin Sullivan. After he went abroad, you latched onto Zane Lennox. Oh, right, and I almost forgot—you also had a thing with Mason Morgan, didn’t you!"
Georgia’s face turned ugly. Amanda made it sound like she’d slept with a long list of men.
"No matter how ’modest’ I am, I can’t compare to you. I heard that in the three years you’ve been chasing Elliot Sheridan, he hasn’t even touched you with a single finger?"
It was just as Nicole Kane had said: the innocent have nothing to fear.
Georgia never had a guilty conscience. She believed the money she earned was all honestly made.
Besides, the only man she had ever tried to win over was, and had always been, Elliot Sheridan.
Amanda’s face went pale, and she glared fiercely at Georgia. "Where did you hear that rumor!"
"Whether it’s a rumor or the truth, you know perfectly well in your own heart!"
Georgia had actually been a little suspicious about it. After all, they had gone on a trip together once, and Amanda had tried every conceivable method to get close to him, all for the sake of starting a relationship.
’Over these past three years, Amanda must have tried countless ways to seduce Elliot!’
Now, seeing the look on Amanda’s face, Georgia was certain: Elliot really had never touched her.
The tightness that had been constricting her chest suddenly vanished, replaced by an incredible sense of relief.
’As long as Elliot never touched her, everything is fine!’
The mention of Elliot made Amanda’s expression turn utterly foul. Her eyes bulged as she glared at Georgia, her face a terrifying, ferocious mask.
’That little hussy Selena Sheridan must have been the one who spread the news that Elliot dumped me.’
’Those two are such close friends; they’d definitely share any news with each other immediately.’
Hmph!
’Let’s just see if they can still be such inseparable besties after tonight!’
The Thorne residence was certainly lively tonight.
The guest wasn’t just Justin Sullivan; he had also brought Selena Sheridan with him.
"Georgia!" Upon seeing Georgia, Selena let go of Justin Sullivan’s arm and rushed forward to give her an enthusiastic hug.
"What are you doing at my house? You didn’t even tell me you were coming!" Georgia said with a laugh, her gaze flickering toward Justin Sullivan behind her.
Justin’s gaze seemed to rest on her, faint yet palpable. Georgia averted her eyes.
’Since I’ve decided to let go of him completely, there’s no reason for things to be awkward between us. At least, not for me.’
Selena blushed shyly. "Jean said he was taking me to meet his family. I thought we were going to the Sullivan residence. How was I supposed to know it would be your house!"
She hadn’t realized until they were standing on Georgia’s doorstep.
Justin Sullivan’s sister was married to Jared Thorne, so coming to the Thorne residence was, in a way, like meeting half his family.
"You have no idea, I thought I was going to meet his father! I was so scared I couldn’t think straight. Ugh, I was about to have a heart attack before I even met anyone!" Selena was still shaken just thinking about it.
"What’s there to be afraid of? You have to meet the in-laws eventually," Georgia said, patting her on the shoulder encouragingly.
