Chapter 70: Chapter 70: We Will Become a Couple Everyone Envies
With that, Georgia Thorne entered the apartment building with her bag, not once looking back.
Her heart pounded. She hoped Zane Lennox had taken her words to heart.
Her rented apartment was on a low floor, so Georgia Thorne chose to take the stairs.
She slowly steadied her breath, trying to compose herself so she wouldn’t worry Nancy, who was at home.
Just as she was opening her door, the elevator chimed open, and Zane Lennox stepped out.
Georgia Thorne’s eyes flew wide. She subconsciously slammed the door shut.
"Why did you come up here?!" ’It seems Zane Lennox must have investigated me. He didn’t just know which building I lived in, but my exact apartment number too.’
The soundproofing in this building wasn’t great. Inside the apartment, Nancy Hughes was playing with her kitten when she heard the door open.
She craned her neck for a look. ’Has the door closed again?’
Finding it strange, she slipped on her slippers and walked to the door.
"Georgia, is that you?" Nancy boldly opened the door. ’After all, only she and Georgia Thorne have keys.’
’There shouldn’t be anyone else.’ freeweɓnovel.cѳm
She opened the door and saw who was standing there—not just Georgia Thorne, but Zane Lennox too!
’Zane Lennox?’
Nancy Hughes suddenly grew flustered, her first instinct to check her appearance.
She had showered right after work and changed into a set of cartoon pajamas. For the sake of comfort, she wasn’t wearing anything underneath.
Her hair was a mess, completely uncombed. She looked an absolute wreck.
And of all times to be in such a state, she had to run into her old crush!
Nancy Hughes felt like she could just die!
"You’re not welcome in my home!" Georgia Thorne blocked the doorway, determined to keep Zane Lennox from getting in.
She thought she’d made herself perfectly clear in the car, yet here he was.
No matter what she said, he still did whatever he wanted.
"Georgia, I brought you home. Aren’t you going to invite me in for a cup of tea?" He was a completely different person from the man downstairs.
Zane Lennox’s attitude had improved greatly. A gentle smile played on his handsome face.
Georgia Thorne’s slender frame was no match for Zane Lennox’s advance.
He turned sideways, and while he appeared to grasp her hand gently, he used hidden strength to wrench Georgia Thorne’s hand away.
Zane Lennox’s only reason for coming up was to see if there were any signs of a man in Georgia Thorne’s apartment.
His gaze swept the room. It was filled with feminine belongings. Not seeing any trace of another man, Zane Lennox’s mood lightened somewhat.
"Zane Lennox, are you crazy?!" Georgia Thorne stormed in and threw her bag onto the sofa.
Under the bright lights, Zane Lennox tilted his head. On the side of his face, the bright red handprint from her slap was clearly visible.
"I know exactly what I want!" Zane Lennox’s lips curled into a cold, sinister smile.
’He wanted Georgia Thorne. And from that moment on, he had never been more certain of anything!’
Nancy Hughes was extremely conscious of Zane Lennox’s presence. He was, after all, the man she’d had a crush on for three years in college; a man she still couldn’t forget.
Her mind was a mess. ’Why did Zane Lennox bring Georgia home? Why are they together?’
’It’s so late... Georgia said she was meeting a friend for dinner tonight. Was that friend... Zane Lennox?’
A torrent of questions flooded her mind, overwhelming her.
’And just now, Zane Lennox’s "hello," that strange look in his eyes... It was like he’d never seen me before.’
This left a bitter taste in Nancy Hughes’s mouth. Standing next to them, she felt as if there were an invisible line separating her from them.
’Does Zane Lennox have feelings for Georgia...?’
"Georgia, Mr. Lennox, please have a seat. I’ll go get you some water." Nancy Hughes lowered her head and walked toward the kitchen, her spirits low.
"That won’t be necessary!" Zane Lennox stopped her. "I came up here to say one thing."
Nancy Hughes gripped a cup and turned around. She saw Zane Lennox’s gaze resting on Georgia Thorne’s face, a deep, unwavering tenderness in his eyes.
A sharp pain lanced through her heart as if pricked by a needle. It slowly tightened, and she subconsciously blurted out, "Wh-what is it?!"
"You’re Georgia’s roommate, so I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Georgia’s fiancé!"
As he spoke, Zane Lennox took advantage of Georgia Thorne’s surprise, pulling her forcefully into his arms.
As his words fell, a sharp, crisp sound rang out.
Nancy Hughes stared blankly at the two embracing intimately. The strength left her fingertips in an instant, and she let the cup slip from her palm.
Tears instantly blurred her vision, smudging their two faces together.
The pain at the core of her heart spread rapidly, shattering it like the glass at her feet.
She could no longer hear Georgia Thorne’s sharp voice; Zane Lennox’s words just kept replaying in her mind.
’Fiancé...’
"Zane Lennox, have you lost your mind?!" ’I thought he was going to say something crazy, and this was it.’
"Whether I’m crazy or not, you’ll find out soon enough!"
Zane Lennox abruptly leaned in close. Georgia Thorne thought he was going to force another kiss on her and instinctively pulled away. But the man only chuckled, his warm breath tickling her neck. "Georgia, we’re going to be a couple everyone envies!"
Zane Lennox didn’t stay long. After dropping that bombshell of a statement, he left coolly.
Georgia Thorne was so furious she wanted to start cursing, but she worriedly turned back to look at Nancy Hughes.
"Nancy, you..."
Georgia Thorne walked towards her, but was stopped short by Nancy Hughes’s shout, "Don’t come any closer!"
"Nancy, don’t listen to Zane Lennox’s nonsense. We really don’t have that kind of relationship!" Georgia Thorne felt terrible, too.
’That Zane Lennox... he’s nothing but trouble for me.’
Nancy Hughes turned her head away, her gaze fixed on the shards of glass on the floor. "It’s messy here. I’ll clean it up!"
"Nancy!" Georgia Thorne called out anxiously, but Nancy Hughes turned, went into the kitchen, and slammed the door hard.
Her silhouette was reflected on the translucent frosted glass. Georgia Thorne walked over and knocked on the door.
"Nancy, open the door! Zane Lennox and I, we’re really not engaged!"
On the translucent glass, the shadow slowly slid down until it disappeared. The sound of soft crying came from the other side of the door, and Georgia Thorne’s heart ached.
Nancy Hughes liked Zane Lennox. Georgia Thorne had only found this out on the day Zane Lennox went abroad.
That night, Nancy Hughes had come back very late.
Georgia Thorne was cooped up in their dorm, worried sick about her. She’d tried calling, but couldn’t get through.
Outside, rain was pouring down. She waited until midnight before a soaking wet Nancy Hughes finally returned.
Looking as miserable as a drowned rat, she threw her arms around Georgia Thorne and burst into tears.
After Georgia Thorne urged her to take a hot shower, the two of them lay in bed and talked all night.
That was when she learned that Nancy Hughes had been secretly in love with Zane Lennox all along.
’She’d always wondered how she kept running into Zane Lennox everywhere. So this was the reason.’
Nancy Hughes had confessed her feelings to Zane Lennox, but not only had he rejected her outright, he’d also been very harsh with his words.
Although Nancy Hughes wasn’t stunningly beautiful, she was still a pretty and sweet girl. A few boys at school were even pursuing her.
The day after her confession, Zane Lennox had already left the country.
Refusing to give up, she chased him to the airport.
In the bustling airport terminal, Nancy Hughes spotted Zane Lennox from afar. But he only glanced around, and when he didn’t see the person he was looking for, he proceeded through without a backward glance.
No matter how loudly she screamed his name, Zane Lennox didn’t hear.
Hearing this, Georgia Thorne’s heart ached for Nancy Hughes, and she thought that Zane Lennox was a truly cruel person.
"Nancy!"
