Chapter 71: Chapter 71: I Will Give You Whatever You Want

Georgia Thorne had never seen Nancy Hughes cry. This was a first.

She pounded on the door, hoping Nancy would open up so they could talk things through.

Nancy’s sobbing voice came through the wooden door. "Georgia Thorne, please, just let me calm down, okay?!"

The pounding stopped.

Georgia choked back a sob. Ever since they’d become close friends, Nancy had never called her by her full name.

Georgia turned and saw the shattered glass on the floor. She swept up the pieces before returning to her room.

She knew she had to give Nancy some time to cool down.

Nancy was good-natured. She never got angry with anyone, never picked a fight.

Georgia had thought that Nancy’s feelings for Zane Lennox were a thing of the past.

She figured Nancy would be over it by morning.

But in the end, she had underestimated the depth of Nancy’s feelings. Even though Zane Lennox had been gone for two years, Nancy had never forgotten him.

The only one who had forgotten was Zane Lennox himself.

Georgia got up early on purpose. Seeing Nancy’s door was still closed, she hurried to make breakfast.

When it was getting late, she went to knock on Nancy’s bedroom door.

She knocked several times, but there was no sound at all.

’Could she still be sleeping?’

She reached for the doorknob, hesitated, then twisted it open. "Nancy, time to get up! I made breakfast!"

Georgia called out as she peered into the room.

The curtains were drawn tightly, and the room was dark.

The large bed was neat and clean, as if no one had slept in it.

Unsure, she found the room’s light switch and flipped it on.

The room was instantly flooded with bright light.

The bed was indeed empty. Nancy was gone.

Nancy loved staying up late, which meant she loved sleeping in. For the four years they’d known each other, Georgia had been the one to wake her up every morning.

Georgia walked to the front door and saw Nancy’s slippers placed neatly on the shoe rack. She must have gone out.

’How long ago did she leave?’

’Or did she leave last night?’

The elaborate breakfast she’d prepared sat on the table, wisps of steam rising from it.

She went back to her room, found her phone, and called Nancy, but the line was busy.

She sent a follow-up text: "Nancy, what do you want for dinner tonight? I’ll pick up groceries."

It was a blatant peace offering. She stuffed the phone in her pocket. ’I hope she sees it.’

Georgia had no appetite. She only took one bite before rushing out to catch the bus.

On the bus, the phone clutched in her hand vibrated. Thinking it was a reply from Nancy, she immediately opened it.

But it was from Zane Lennox.

Georgia, whatever you want, I’ll give it to you.

She had barely sat down at her desk at the office when Nicole Kane called the entire team in for a meeting.

Georgia was distracted the entire meeting, her eyes glued to her phone.

It had been almost an hour since she sent the text, but there was still no reply.

Usually, no matter how busy Nancy was, she would reply within ten minutes.

’She’s just busy,’ Georgia told herself. ’Busier than usual.’

"Georgia Thorne!" Nicole Kane’s voice suddenly rang in her ear.

Georgia, lost in thought, was nudged by a colleague. She stared blankly for a few seconds before quickly standing up.

Caught spacing out in a meeting, Georgia blushed and lowered her head in embarrassment.

The women around her shot her looks, clearly enjoying the drama.

Just as Georgia was about to apologize, Nicole’s voice rang out, "The person we want to praise today is Georgia Thorne! Come on, everyone, let’s give her a round of applause!"

Nicole’s words surprised not only Georgia, but also the other women who had been ready for some drama.

’Since when do you get praised for spacing out?’

"Manager, I..."

"This morning, Manager Garrison from the Lennox Group personally dropped off the contract. We’ve now officially signed with them. Manager Garrison also made a point of praising one person." Nicole’s gaze fell on Georgia. "That person is our very own Georgia Thorne. Her contribution to this contract was indispensable, so I’ve decided to give fifty percent of the commission from this project to her!"

This contract with the Lennox Group was huge, and the commission was correspondingly substantial.

If it were five or ten percent of the commission, they wouldn’t have had a problem with it. But fifty percent was unheard of.

Half of fifty thousand is twenty-five thousand. That’s as much as you’d make from dozens of smaller contracts.

Half the commission. Everyone exchanged glances.

Georgia was stunned. She hadn’t expected this either.

Zane’s text from this morning suddenly popped into her head.

Whatever she wanted, he would give it to her.

’So, he just gave me the contract?!’

Zane’s actions felt more like charity, and it disgusted Georgia.

After the meeting was dismissed, Nicole Kane called Georgia into her office.

She took out a thick envelope, opened it, and pulled out a stack of crisp bills.

"This is your commission. You can count it." Nicole placed the envelope on the desk.

"Manager, I don’t want it. Please give it back to Zane Lennox!" Georgia remained standing.

It was a mutual, unspoken understanding, so no further explanation was needed. ƒгeewebnovёl.com

Nicole stood up. "Georgia, I’ve always admired you. Although you didn’t major in sales, you have a talent for it. Your performance is much higher than others’. To be precise, without you, our company wouldn’t even have been in the running for this Lennox contract. You’ve earned it, so take it with a clear conscience. If you really don’t want the money, fine. You can take it and return it to Zane Lennox at the Lennox Group yourself."

Nicole was a smooth talker; Georgia always found herself persuaded by her.

Leaving the office with the thick envelope, her heart felt as heavy as the money in her hands.

’What on earth is Zane Lennox thinking?’

’First, he dragged his feet, refusing to sign and forcing Nicole to make me call him. Now he has a sudden change of heart?’

In any case, since this project was over, it meant her connection to Zane Lennox was over as well.

Georgia sat down and saw her phone on the desk, the notification light blinking.

She opened it to see a missed call from Selena Sheridan.

She picked up her phone and walked toward a deserted corner of the company stairwell.

The call connected. "Selena, did you need something?"

Georgia asked in a low voice, keeping an eye on her surroundings.

Hearing no sound, she thought the call hadn’t gone through. She glanced at her screen again—it was definitely connected.

"Hello? Selena?"

’The number’s right, and the call connected, so why is there no sound?’

Georgia said "hello" a few more times and even turned the call volume all the way up.

Suddenly, a heavy breath came through the speaker, startling Georgia.

Georgia herself wasn’t sure how long she had spent with Elliot Sheridan.

It was short enough to be measured in three years, yet long enough to be counted in tens of millions of seconds.

The longer she was with Elliot, the more she realized how much she had changed in certain ways.

The changes were subtle, creeping in without her notice. By the time she realized it, she couldn’t pinpoint when her habits had shifted.

So many habits. Habits that revolved around Elliot.

And now... now she could even recognize him by the sound of his breathing.

Georgia thought she must be going crazy. Why else would she suspect the person holding the phone right now was Elliot Sheridan?

This was clearly Selena Sheridan’s phone.

"Selena, I was busy with something earlier and didn’t see my phone. You called because...?"
