Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Why Don’t You Go to My Second Uncle’s Company?
She remembered her school days. To get to school early, she would have to wake up a little after five, squeeze onto a bus for an hour, and would arrive just as the warning bell rang.
Every time, she would rush into the classroom right as the bell rang.
Back then, Selena would cover for her and even bring her breakfast.
’I’ll never find a friend as good as Selena in this lifetime.’
She took a walk downstairs and bought some soy milk and crullers on the way.
By the time she returned to her apartment, it was exactly seven o’clock.
She thought about knocking on Nancy Hughes’s door, then suddenly remembered she was on a business trip and hadn’t returned yet.
After eating breakfast, she headed to work.
She had meetings with two clients during the day. While she was out at one of them, Zane Lennox called.
Georgia Thorne intentionally ignored the call. Her phone kept vibrating on the table until she couldn’t take it anymore. She apologized to the client, then got up and went to the women’s restroom.
"Get down here!" Zane Lennox’s voice, full of rage, burst from the speaker.
He didn’t give Georgia half a second to react. "If you don’t come down, I’m coming up to find you!"
"Zane Lennox, what do you think you’re doing!"
"I’m downstairs at your office building. Come down. I have something to talk to you about!"
"I’m not at the office right now!"
"Get down here while I still have some patience!"
"I’m really not at the office! I’m out meeting a client!"
Georgia furrowed her brow. ’Where is all this anger coming from?’ she wondered.
She hung up, silenced her phone, and stuffed it into her pocket.
She returned to her seat and resumed discussing the contract with her client.
After back-to-back meetings with two clients, it was already almost five o’clock.
She had planned to go straight home, but just as she entered the subway station, she remembered she’d left something at the office and had to go back for it.
Around five-thirty, she emerged from the subway station.
Georgia hadn’t even reached the office building entrance before Zane Lennox blocked her path.
"Za—" Before she could even get his name out, he grabbed her wrist. freēwebnovel.com
"This will only take a few minutes. Get in the car!" Zane snarled, yanking her by the wrist and roughly shoving her inside.
He walked around the front of the car and got in on the other side.
He hit the central lock, trapping Georgia inside.
"Zane Lennox, what in the world are you doing!" Georgia sat bolt upright, glaring furiously at the man beside her.
"August 13th. Where were you that night!"
"Zane Lennox, you’re not my keeper! You have no right to interrogate me!"
"Georgia, do you have to argue with me about everything? You’re not leaving until you give me an answer. Or, if you’d prefer, I could always invite you back to my place!"
"You don’t have the right!"
Furious, Georgia turned and fumbled for the door lock button.
Zane grabbed her wrist. "Georgia, my patience is wearing thin. I’ll ask you one more time: where exactly were you on the night of August 13th!"
"At home, of course!" Georgia answered without a second thought.
She wrenched her arm free from his grip. "I answered you. Can you let me out of the car now?"
"You’re lying! You weren’t home on August 13th!" Zane gritted his teeth. "Did you sleep with Mason Morgan?"
’Mason Morgan again!’
’Who the hell is that?!’
Georgia took a deep breath. "Are you insane? Who is Mason Morgan? I don’t even know anyone by that name!"
"..."
Zane pressed his lips together. When she said Mason Morgan’s name, her tone did sound like she was hearing it for the first time.
"You’d better not be lying to me!"
’She looks genuinely surprised. It doesn’t seem like she’s lying. I’ll believe her, for now.’
Zane unlocked the doors. Georgia scrambled out of the car as if she were fleeing for her life.
’In her eyes, Zane Lennox was nothing but a madman!’
’There’s no point talking to a madman.’
She went back up to the office to get her things. By the time she came back down, Zane Lennox and his car were gone.
She breathed a sigh of relief, glanced at the time, and hurried toward the bus stop.
Back in her cold, empty apartment, she was alone and couldn’t be bothered to make dinner.
She bought a few packs of instant ramen at the supermarket, boiled them, cracked an egg in, and called it dinner.
In a terrible mood, she grabbed a rag and started cleaning the entire apartment.
While cleaning her room, she found a pharmacy bag on her desk with a receipt inside.
It was the receipt from when she ran to the pharmacy in the middle of the night to buy the morning-after pill.
’Good thing Nancy Hughes didn’t see it. That would have been a disaster.’
She tossed the receipt into the wastebasket, but a moment later, she picked it back out.
She uncrumpled the paper and looked at it. The date was August 14th, and the time was just after 11:00 PM, nearly midnight and the start of the 15th.
Zane Lennox’s question echoed in her mind: ’August 13th. Where were you!’
That night, she had been at home before Hayley Sullivan drugged her and had her sent to a hotel. After that, she’d woken up in Elliot Sheridan’s bed.
’Then who was Mason Morgan?’
She dropped the rag, picked up her phone, and typed in the name.
When the results appeared, her legs suddenly went weak, and she collapsed onto the sofa.
Mason Morgan was the president of a major company in Portmire. His wife had died two years ago.
’Remembering what Amanda Thorne had said, could she assume that Hayley Sullivan had been trying to get her into Mason Morgan’s bed that night?’
’Who could have guessed that Elliot Sheridan would rescue her? Even now, Hayley Sullivan and the others must think she slept with Mason Morgan that night.’
Georgia’s mind was a complete mess. All of this was just making her feel worse.
Her eyes suddenly shot wide. ’Then why would Zane Lennox ask where I was that night? Does he know?’
’Does he know about me and Elliot Sheridan?’
’It wasn’t just about the night of August 13th. Did he also see me passionately kissing Elliot in the hallway that night?’
Georgia was riddled with guilt, and her head was pounding.
For the next few days, she couldn’t focus on work because of Zane Lennox.
「That Weekend」
Georgia remembered that today was the day Selena Sheridan was due to return.
She got dressed up and headed out the door.
Selena Sheridan’s plane was scheduled to land at 10:30 AM.
Georgia left early but ran into traffic.
After a thirty-minute delay, she finally hurried into the airport.
She glanced at the time—it was exactly 10:30.
She waited patiently for a moment, then saw a crowd of people emerging from the arrivals gate.
She was a little short, so she had to stand on her tiptoes to see.
"Georgia, I’m over here!"
It was Selena Sheridan who spotted her first.
She had changed so much after three years in Breccon.
Selena used to have naturally curly hair, but now it was long and straight, making her look much more prim and proper than before.
"Selena, welcome back!"
"Georgia, since when are we so formal with each other?"
Selena pouted, her playful nature shining through, and pulled Georgia into a huge hug.
"I missed you to death these past three years abroad!"
"Mhmm, I missed you too!"
After their embrace, Selena turned and looked back toward the gate.
"Wait here a second. I’m going to see what’s taking him so long!"
"Who?"
"My boyfriend from Breccon!" Selena beamed.
She let go of Georgia’s hand, took a couple of steps back toward the gate, then stopped.
"Come on, over here! I want to introduce you to my best friend!" Selena waved energetically at a man pushing a luggage cart.
The look in her eyes as she watched the man was one of pure, unconcealable happiness.
Georgia followed Selena’s gaze, and her own eyes instantly welled with tears.
The man in the gray casual outfit walking toward Selena was the man she had held in her heart for six years.
Justin Sullivan.
